Each office in the Federal Highway Administration is responsible for maintaining accessibility information as it relates to its own program. This page supports the effort to organize and make available all information that relates to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) or other accessibility resources that may affect research, planning, design, construction, or operations of any Federal Highway Administration project.

Planning, Environment, and Realty
The
Office of Planning, Environment, and Realty
serves as FHWA's advocate and national leader for environment protection and enhancement, comprehensive intermodal and multi-modal transportation planning, and for fair and prudent acquisition and management of real property. This office includes FHWA's Bicycle and Pedestrian Program, and some of the funding programs frequently used to develop accessible pedestrian facilities and trails: the Transportation Enhancement Activities, the Recreational Trails Program, the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program, and the National Scenic Byways Program.

Office of Safety
's mission is to reduce highway fatalities by making our roads safer through a data-driven, systematic approach and addressing all "4Es" of safety: engineering, education, enforcement, and emergency medical services. This office has responsibility for Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety, and includes the Safe Routes to School program, which provides funds than can used to develop accessible pedestrian facilities and trails providing access to elementary and middle schools.

Americans with Disabilities Act
The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) prohibits discrimination and ensures equal opportunity and access for persons with disabilities.
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act
No otherwise qualified individual with a disability in the United States, as defined in section 7(20), shall, solely by reason of her or his disability, be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance or under any program or activity conducted by any Executive agency or by the United States Postal Service.
Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended
Agencies must give employees with disabilities and members of the public access to information and communication technology (ICT) that is comparable to the access available to others.
Section 508 was enacted to eliminate barriers in information technology, to make available new opportunities for people with disabilities, and to encourage development of technologies that will help achieve these goals. The law applies to all Federal agencies when they develop, procure, maintain, or use ICT. See
