Students entering the Art Department in their first year of study may declare Art Education as their major and be admitted to the Bachelor of Science in Art with Multi-Age Visual Arts Licensure (B.S.) Program. Students who were not initially accepted into the Art Education program may seek admission after completing ART 195: Introduction to Art Education. In addition, a student must have completed at least six hours of studio work and be enrolled in at least six additional hours of studio classes.
Students will be admitted as space and resources allow, and admission decisions will occur both during the Fall and Spring semesters, in late September and mid-February. Students eligible for admission consideration are transfer students from other schools, Miami students desiring to change or declare their major, and students transferring from the Hamilton and Middletown campuses to the Oxford campus.
Students desiring entry to the Art Education Program must:
- Successfully complete ART 195.
- Complete at least six hours of studio work and be enrolled in at least six additional hours of studio classes.
- Submit a current transcript of grades or DARS form.
- Submit the following on your professional website:
10 images of personal artwork from college with captions including media and year completed.
- Titles are optional. High school images are permitted, but do not count towards the 10 required.
- Submit a written statement of intent and commitment to art teaching. Consider addressing the following:
- Why do you want to teach art?
- What has inspired you to want to teach art?
- How can you demonstrate your commitment to teaching through writing at this point?
- Submit a résumé with emphasis on work experience related to children and adolescents (PreK-12).
Students who are denied admission in their initial attempt may apply a second time. Students who are denied in their second attempt are ineligible for further admission consideration.
The Art Education Retention Policy, as outlined in Departmental literature, also requires all majors to demonstrate successful completion of progress reviews, including professional dispositions. Due to enrollment constraints, a limited number of transfer students are accepted each year. Transfer students into the Art Education Program will be assigned an Art Education Advisor when they become an official major.
