North Carolina crime statistics are reports submitted to the State Bureau of Investigation from law enforcement agencies across the state.  The SBI provides the collection of data as part of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, a nationwide effort administered by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Crimes statistics are tallied for violent crime, property crime, age of perpetrator, offenses by type of weapon, offenses by relationship of victim to offender, and by city and county.

State Highway Patrol
The N.C. State Highway Patrol has more than 1,600 troopers who cover nearly 80,000 miles of North Carolina roadways (more than any other state except Texas). Their mission is to make the highways as safe as possible by enforcing the state's traffic laws, guiding traffic during hurricane evacuations and re-routing traffic around hazardous chemical spills. They also stand ready should any act of terrorism occur.

Testing of drinking water for inorganic chemicals.Water samples from both public and private water systems are examined for chemical and/or physical parameters. A private water system (homeowner) can obtain chemical analyses from the State Laboratory only if the sample is submitted through the local health department. These samples are routinely analyzed for alkalinity, arsenic, calcium, chloride, copper, hardness, lead, iron, magnesium, manganese, pH, fluoride, and zinc.
