Plot
The story is set in the late 1970s, in the family quarters of a Suzhou cotton mill, where two families—the Zhuangs and the Lins—live in the same alley.
The Zhuang family's matriarch, Huang Ling (played by Yan Ni), and her husband, Zhuang Chaoying (played by Guo Xiaodong), represent a traditional Chinese family. The couple prioritizes their children's college entrance exams above all else. Zhuang Chaoying, a teacher, is extremely strict about his children's education, while Huang Ling silently bears the weight of family life.
Their neighbor, Lin Wufeng (played by Li Guangjie), and his wife, Song Ying (played by Jiang Xin), are a warm and affectionate couple. Lin Wufeng dotes on Song Ying, representing a different family dynamic.
With the restoration of the college entrance exam and the reform and opening-up, both families undergo tremendous changes. The Zhuang children, Zhuang Tunan (played by Fan Chengcheng) and Zhuang Xiaoting (played by Guan Xiaotong), work hard to meet their parents' expectations, while the Lin children also face choices and challenges as they grow up.
Through nuanced storytelling, the series portrays the lives of ordinary Chinese people during that era, as well as the flow of family bonds, friendship, and love over time.
