Ceramics are the most common materials found in almost every period and settlement in the ancient times. They are important in terms of showing the technological levels of past cultures in production and raw material processing as well as bearing the traces of commercial, cultural, economical and political changes of their time. Having drawn attention of researchers besides ceramics in the first half of the 19th century, amphoras were evaluated with regard to their effects on commercial and economical activities of cities and gained an identity beyond the typological research during the 20th century. People needed to pack the traded goods after the commencement of exchange between settlements in the ancient ages. Amphoras with firmly-sealed mouths were durable for marine and land transport. Amphoras were the integral part of trade since they ably preserved the spoilable goods such as processed fish, fruit, hazelnut, oil and wine. Amphoras were examined only typologically in the beginning, but the increasing number of amphorae with the same forms and varying paste structures required more information on their production sites, origins, and technology. Many archeologists and researchers have defined, classified and catalogued these forms as the most palpable economical proofs. The standard forms produced in different sizes and shapes in order to be used for trade by the ancient settlements made it possible for traders and consumers to know the origin and content of goods. Amphoras as the most significant proof of the ancient world trade were also reused for different purposes in addition to transporting wine, oil, marine products, fruits, hazelnut, etc., which were indigenous to a region or production site.

The advantage of being able to deliver LR 1 amphoras, which are the local production of the city since 4th century AD, to the foreign market has facilitated the supply of different product groups from distant regions. Red Slip Ware are at the top of these groups. Ceramics belonging to this group, which were produced and spread in different forms in a wide geographical area during the Late Roman-Early Byzantine Periods, facilitate the evaluation of the economic level and trade system of the regions and enable the determination of commercial routes.
The publication of different ceramic groups within the Mediterranean trade system found in Elaiussa Sebaste will provide clearer information on the production, import and export dynamics of the city. Fine ceramics produced in Phokaia, which are the subject of the article, are also a new evidence for the commercial relations between Cilicia and the Aegean Region, in Sebaste, as an indicator of the intense commercial activities that existed in the Late Antiquity.
In this context, it is aimed to determine the form groups and typological features of Phokaia Red Slip Ware, which are understood to have been used extensively in Elaiussa Sebaste and It is aimed to reach preliminary results on the commercial relations of Elaiussa Sebaste, especially in Phokaia productions.

The ancient city of Elaiussa Sebaste is one of the most important port cities of the Rough Cilicia Region, which was one of the important routes of Mediterranean trade in ancient times, located in today's Mersin province. The city, which received the title of "metropolis" in the Roman Period, experienced its most active period in terms of production and exports in the Early Byzantine period. The city, which imported the products of many different regions and cities, was able to include its own products in this trade system. The African Red Slip Ceramics, which are the subject of the article, are among these imported groups and the commercial relations of the city, thus the connection between the Cilicia Region and Africa. The paper is important in terms of presenting concrete data.

follow from the Hellenistic period up to the 7th century AD, is an important port city in Cilicia Tracheia. During the Late Roman-Early Byzantine period of the city which begins at the end of the 4th century AD we witness an extensive trade activity as in the Roman Period. This process was also influenced by the city's production of LR 1 amphoras, which are thought to carry wine and olive oil. Because of the political events of the era, Elaiussa Sebaste maintained its trade activities with many different centres ranging from Syria-Palestine to Africa and Egypt and from the Aegean to the Black Sea region. By means of the amphorae in question, we aim to reveal Elaiussa Sebaste’s trade connections with the Black Sea region in the Late Roman-Early Byzantine period. The study is thought to attest the existence of Black Sea amphora forms in Cilicia and to bridge some gap in their distribution maps. With this study, researchers studying trade routes will be able to find Elaiussa Sebaste within this system.
