Matienzo Caves Project 2026
Philip Papard
£400
GPF Feedback:
Thank you for applying for a GPF Spring 2026 award, we are happy to support your expedition and wish you a safe and exciting trip.
Selection of feedback:
- A reliable old favourite which continues to deliver results. Strong & experienced team - possibility/probability of more youth being incorporated later, but allocation reflects current team listing.
- A Good strong team, but lacking somewhat in youth engagement, the young people they have had in the past have migrated to other expeditions or have not come back. It would be nice to see some retention in the new members of the expedition, to show that the project is likely to continue into the future. most on the list are veteran Matienzo expedition experts.
- Established expedition with good results each year but progress and success does seem to get lost in the scale of the expedition. Suggest that in future concentrate on the summer trip and 1 or 2 specific objectives, rather than the 229 day duration, don’t think it adds to the application and if it’s focussed on some specific goals, rather than long term might get a more favourable award
- The inexperienced group from SUSS who attended last year feedback that they have a successful and beneficial time
- We were approached by a UBSS contingent who wanted to go on expedition, we pointed them at Matienzo hoping their names might appear but never heard anything back. Would have awarded more if the youth engagement was clearer up front (we know that's not easy, but other expeds have names and are rewarded accordingly)
- We would also like to encourage all expeditions to share their survey data on the cave-registry.org.uk site (if not already).
GPF2026a-002
North Peru
Peter Talling
£1300
GPF Feedback:
Thank you for applying for a GPF Spring 2026 award, we are happy to support your expedition and wish you a safe and exciting trip. We have submitted a favourable reference for the MEF award and hope you receive further funding
Selection of feedback:
- One of the most out there expeditions of this round of submissions, some great cavers supporting some young people and the inclusion of a doctor for such a remote area is always a key addition to the team
-well defined objectives and some great leads.
- This is an expedition in the spirit of the original Ghar Parau, with a strong team, but with significant expenses, deserving funding above the average per caver across the applications.
- Says developing younger, but there aren’t many compared to other expeditions. Exped has second highest mean age of 2026 trips. Ideally would like to see younger..maybe something GPF can look to support ad-hoc in the future to encourage younger onto such trips
- We would also like to encourage all expeditions to share their survey data on the cave-registry.org.uk site (if not already).
GPF2026a-003
Albania 2026
Rob Eavis
£300
GPF Feedback:
Thank you for applying for a GPF Spring 2026 award, we are happy to support your expedition and wish you a safe and exciting trip.
Selection of feedback:
- Good to see the team of Ned and Ben out with a good expedition, having young people such as these will only make the team stronger as they pull more people into the expedition and potentially extend the amount of time the Albania trip runs for.
- I'm sure the young people will learn some things from being on such an intense and fast paced expedition. The inclusion of them should be considered when considering the funds allocated, a move to a more inclusive expedition fostering young people should be rewarded.
- A very efficient looking expedition who from past experience will show what can be done in a short time. Not a very expensive trip but worthy of some support.
- Strong team returning to continue previous good work. However, short duration and relatively low cost mitigates against a larger award.
- Would like to see formal full report from previous year and this one. Blog is good for on the fly reporting but better report ideal. Potential for more funding here if reporting and goals expanded upon
- We would also like to encourage all expeditions to share their survey data on the cave-registry.org.uk site (if not already).
GPF2026a-004
Tresviso 2026
Phil Walker
£650
GPF Feedback:
Thank you for applying for a GPF Spring 2026 award, we are happy to support your expedition and wish you a safe and exciting trip.
Selection of feedback:
- Great team! I'm having a year off this year - I know you guys will smash it! The young ones are really strong, and probably don't need any training, some can survey with a beer in their hand and upside down.
- Ongoing project with excellent history. Lots of young people but no AP applications. It would be good to put something towards their gear and support the young people.
- Objectives are reasonably clear, but not that specific.
-Application on the whole and objectives in particular are thoughtfully explained to someone who does not know the area. Objective seem sensible and very experienced group. Lots of field days and lots of young people. No AP's.
- We would also like to encourage all expeditions to share their survey data on the cave-registry.org.uk site (if not already).
GPF2026a-005
Preservation of Ancient Maya Caves
Jessica Ratclifffe
£100
GPF Feedback:
Thank you for applying for a GPF Spring 2026 award, we are happy to support your expedition and wish you a safe and exciting trip.
Selection of feedback:
- A mix of speleology, science and archaeology, but with only one eligible participant.
- Whilst it feels like an application we should support, for consistency with similar previous applications it can only be on the basis of a modest sum.
- Concern that it's over 2 years and the Director of Archaeology is the report author, the wider caving community will not get to see the results.
- Experience section just seems to be a list of surveying projects in US and Belize. What is the caving experience?
- We would also like to encourage all expeditions to share their survey data on the cave-registry.org.uk site (if not already). This can be hidden from the general public to conform to Belize IA requirements
GPF2026a-006
CUCC Loser Plateau Expedition 2026
Todd Rye
£1500
GPF Feedback:
Thank you for applying for a GPF Spring 2026 award, we are happy to support your expedition and wish you a safe and exciting trip.
Selection of feedback:
- A very large team with a good balance of trips to Loser and some relatively high experience levels will make for an excellent expedition.
- Objectives look good and some exciting leads to go at
- Lots of young people. lots of field days. Lots comes out of this expedition, including talks at CHECC, HE, Descent article, Instagram and good repository of information online.
- Disappointing that no Alex Pitchers were put forward, there were at least 6 eligible and the application appeared rushed or little thought, no effort put into experience, surnames not known. No attachments
- Again.. those on the expedition should not be put down as referees
- We would also like to encourage all expeditions to share their survey data on the cave-registry.org.uk site (if not already).
GPF2026a-007
Polna Moč - Full Power
Chris Hayes
£1050
GPF Feedback:
Thank you for applying for a GPF Spring 2026 award, we are happy to support your expedition and wish you a safe and exciting trip.
Selection of feedback:
- Clear Definition of key objectives, clear from the list of members that this will be a heavy training expedition. Approx half of those in attendance have never been on expedition before, Kudos to those who will bear the brunt of training, organising, looking after others
- Whilst there is no mention of Science being undertaken, with the team, I think you have to be careful you don't bite off more than you can chew. keep the objectives manageable and achievable so that morale is high. and most importantly enjoy the time spent out in the mountains.
- A good development expedition with many young cavers and a full range of expedition activity
- Again, a solid project which continues to deliver results with a predominantly young team.
- Very young expedition, 9 cavers' first expedition. Lots of others returning year on year. Clear objectives, suggests mineralogy samples to be taken, although not expanded on, good use of Lidar data in previous years
- We would also like to encourage all expeditions to share their survey data on the cave-registry.org.uk site (if not already).
GPF2026a-008
Dachstein Caving Expedition 2026
Andrew McLeod
£900
GPF Feedback:
Thank you for applying for a GPF Spring 2026 award, we are happy to support your expedition and wish you a safe and exciting trip.
Selection of feedback:
- A well balanced expedition which will be a great success.
- Wonderful deep caving expedition, efficient with lots of mentoring/training
- As ever a great expedition worthy of decent funding. Slightly older age / experience range than say the ICCC exped, however I feel this is a good thing to allow better transfer of skill set.
- The ongoing exploration and potential is hidden in the wording. Lot of information on setting things up and keeping things going, training in camping etc. which is great, bring the actual exploration and leads to the front, otherwise some of the good stuff lost.
- Lots of field days, lots of young people. discounted for younger people. Several objectives, would have been helpful to understand if the leads were heading towards connections or blank space. Will be interesting to see what happens with the climate data they have taken. Maps are appreciated but could have been clearer/described.
- Is there an easy accessible website with reports and history?
- We would also like to encourage all expeditions to share their survey data on the cave-registry.org.uk site (if not already).
GPF2026a-009
Ario 2026
Mark Sims
£650
GPF Feedback:
Thank you for applying for a GPF Spring 2026 award, we are happy to support your expedition and wish you a safe and exciting trip.
Selection of feedback:
- Clear presentation of Aims and Objectives and the use of funds to support the Younger members on the Expedition shows that the Expedition is in line with the GPF's goals to encourage and enhance the younger and/or more inexperienced in our hobby.
- Ongoing great project.
- More of an expedition ethos than Matienzo but not particularly remote
- Yet again, a solid and well established expedition with a good mix of experienced heads and a younger contingent
- Is there website with reports
- We would also like to encourage all expeditions to share their survey data on the cave-registry.org.uk site (if not already).

Matienzo Caves Project 2025
Philip Papard
£600
GPF Feedback:
Thank you for applying for a GPF Spring 2025 award, we are happy to support your efforts and wish you a safe and exciting trip.
We received an application from a SUSS contingent who are part of the Matienzo trip in 2025. We have not funded SUSS separately as that would lead to an unnecessary precedent however we have awarded two Alex Pitcher awards to individuals in their member list. Going forward we will only accept one application from each trip, regardless of the number of different clubs that are going on the trip.

I am pleased to inform you that GPF have agreed to allocate you funds towards your expedition to Thailand. I trust you have a safe and successful trip. I am pleased to inform you that GPF have agreed to allocate you funds towards your expedition to Mulu. I trust you have a safe and successful trip. The committee has asked me to convey their appreciation of the quality of the application and supporting documents and hence we awarded the highest value to a trip for some considerable years. The only negative comments at all on an application which was very well received was the lack of anyone under 30 on the team and a lack of local involvement

Rob Middleton is coming to the end of his 4 year tenure as elected member and the autumn 2021 meeting will be his last
If you know of anyone who would like to serve as an elected member on the GPF committee please could you ask them to get in touch with their caving CV such that they can be added to the election process this autumn?
The GPF committee this spring considered carbon foot prints of expeditions and in future we will be asking you to calculate your carbon footprint using a nominated tool and we would strongly advise carbon offset actions accordingly

On behalf of GPF I am writing to you to give you feedback on your application for Mulu Caves 2021. GPF agreed with the assessment of MCP that this was a strong expedition , and the team has a good track record of science, exploration and reporting back. The expedition was awarded 3,000 , 500 of which is retained pending feedback at the end of the expedition.

GPF Feedback:
This expedition is based at high altitudes in an area that is little known to cavers, and so is a really exciting proposition with the potential to explore some of the highest caves in the world.. Its good to see this is a longer duration trip than previously, though given the ambitious nature and remote location. A good strong team with a blend of youth and experience which should be capable of addressing the physical, technical and logistical challenges. Costs are relatively eye-watering, although this is clearly heavily influenced by the necessary logistical support, which the team's prior experience has indicated as being a necessary investment. This is definitely one of the more ambitious and exciting expeditions that has been submitted to GPF over the last 10 years.

GPF Feedback:
An exciting expedition with much further potential for exploration. Quite technical diving which is always well published and recorded visually as a complete package. A fairly costly trip, not so much in terms of travel, but in terms of equipment, gas etc but is entirely necessary. It is a very short duration expedition and potentially could more be done with longer in the field.

GPF Feedback:
The committee felt that the application was lacking in a lot of detail, with the objectives very basic. Rather than supplying the required information, a reference to the website was given. While this may contain a wealth of information about Mulu expeditions, it requires each of the GPF committee members to search for themselves. This information should be provided in the application. The expedition has a strong team but only 4 out of 14 members are under 35 years which is a great shame considering the wealth of experience other younger cavers could learn from. The expedition will no doubt have some good discoveries, which will be well documented.

GPF Feedback:
Due to Chinese visa problems occurring the Napo China 2019 expedition, ultimately resulting in the withdraw of this expedition, the GPF committee agreed that on submission of a new application, with objectives, personnel and expenditure, GPF would allocate funds to this application. At short notice this application has been done and is well presented with clear objectives' personnel and finance. The team will hopefully still have some good expedition caving to go at despite the change of location at the last minute. An Alex Pitcher award was also awarded and GPF hope that Josh will enjoy his first expedition despite all the initial set backs.

GPF Feedback:
Good team returning to a diving project started last year. Results from the last expedition require even more sophisticated diving equipment and capable divers. Hopefully the divers can borrow rather than buy a number of scooters to reduce the cost of the expedition. Previous years exploration well documented and publicised. Application well presented and on time this year 🙂 In a drive by GPF to see more science being conducted in expeditions, the committee would love to see some more explanation of the hydrological/geomorphological context of this cave in the wider region. GPF look forward to seeing this year’s results.
Applied for Mount Everest funding, but sadly not successful.

An expedition primarily to try and connect a number of known caves into the Clearwater cave system and extend its length, with some additional bolt climbing objectives. Some younger members but mainly over 35 years, possibly reflected by the cost of the expedition. Good application, highlighting the participation of Hazel Barton in an initial recce into the microbiology of the area, a great shame more younger people aren't involved to benefit from her scientific knowledge.
Applied and received good support from the Mount Everest Foundation as well as help from Malaysian Airlines, the grant award from GPF reflecting this allowing monies to be allocated elsewhere.

Small (little known - relatively young by normal standards) team going to recce a new area. The team has done their home work (as shown by a good application), both identifying the area they want to look at as well as communicating with the local cavers (the head of the Armenian Speleological Centre - participating in the expedition). The team leader has a good understanding of caves and their development. Hopefully the results will be fruitful, (with possible hydrological and biological studies) which will warrant an full scale expedition next year.

A return to previously visited area on several occasions. An exceptionally poor application making judgement on objectives, expedition costs, personnel etc very difficult. Dachstein Expedition

£1200
GPF Feedback:
Longstanding project from a dedicated and tenacious team with a long record of exploration. Fantastic to see a GPF application from the expedition. Achieved a long sought-after goal of connecting the Dachstein plateau to the Hirlatz system making a 1560m deep cave. Traditionally this expo has had large numbers of students and younger cavers though it is led and organised by cavers who have been involved for many years. Application a bit lacking of young members attending, but the committee appreciate the problem of students unwilling to commit to the Exped at this early stage. The expedition could benefit from some more documentation and publications especially considering the great surveying that is being undertaken, possibly with a bit of scientific explanation of the hydrology of the area.
This grant allocation has been loaded to help buy a Cave link system (£1000 - earmarked by GPF for one unit) as the caves in the region can flash flood with freak thunderstorms and deep camping is generally undertaken. It is requested that collaboration with other expeditions (such as the CUCC - also subject to this benefit) to share units. It is also hoped that the units will be made available to other UK Expeds if not being used by the Dachstein team.

2nd expedition to Mulu to continue exploration of a different part of the national park Whiterock, but not subject to the same MEF grant as GPF2019a-001. Good application but objectives a bit lost in historical prose. After an initial small man recce building good relationship with the local US cavers, they are return to this caving area with a larger team. Good application with clear objectives (including cave diving) focused on high quality surveying. GPF Feedback:
Established expedition with good reputation for documentation, excellent training for cavers new to expedition. Good prospects for significant new finds. This year however, the team is very young with the oldest member being 25years age, but should be excellent training for cavers new to expedition. 2 x Pitcher applicants appear the epitome of the target audience and should be funded accordingly. Good use of technology for cave exploration, with cave-link, paperless surveying and drones, hopefully this will be extended into conducting more cave science.

CUCC Austria Expedition 2019

£1400
GPF Feedback:
Another longstanding project with a strong, tenacious team and an excellent record of achievements over time. Good application but always left to the last minute, causing a flurry of email to GPF with perceivable problems with the application system - the team would benefit considerably by allowing more time for the application process. Application shows a notably strong emphasis on surveying and recording, with large numbers of students and younger cavers (the expedition being led by a student caver), but with a number of older members attending, giving no doubt a great training ground for the younger cavers. Good prospects for significant new finds in the system including deep leads involving camping but also with surface prospecting and easier, shallower caves.
This grant allocation has also been loaded to help buy a Cave link system (£1000 - ear marked by GPF for one unit) in an identical way to the Dachstein Expedition as the caves in the region can flash flood with freak thunderstorms and deep camping is generally undertaken. It is requested that collaboration with other expeditions (such as the Dachstein - also subject to this benefit) to share units. It is also hoped that the units will be made available to other UK expeds if not being used by the CUCC Team.

GPF Feedback:
The application was received too late for consideration in the GPF spring meeting, and thus was considered at the GPF Autumn meeting, the expedition having already departed and returned. Due to the extenuating circumstances relating to the late application and it also being the applicants first GPF application, the GPF committee decided to consider this application, but in so doing limit the award given.
The application was well filled out and presented, and the aims of the expedition well were clearly laid out. The report given and the presentation given at Hidden Earth 2018 indicated the success of this diving expedition, and its continuation next year. We look forward to another application next year, hopefully before the deadline closes.

Interesting expedition to a fairly remote part of Namibia. The team is going back after further work by local groups have identified the presence of more caves. All the participants are over 45. A great shame the group could not great the space for a younger member possibly getting into geology or cave science as would be a great opportunity. GPF Feedback:
Experienced expedition team working consistently over a period of time with good results and reporting.Different area already recce'd with established potential. Another project worthy of continued GPF support at a decent level. The application lacked a little detail in places - for the majority of participants their experience has been written as "experienced expedition caver", no attachments etc to support the application, the detailed description ends mid sentence suggesting little time was spent on it or it wasn't checked before sending. The committee hope this will be addressed in subsequent applications.

GPF Feedback:
Interesting and well filled out application with a good science basis - driven by a PhD project. The cave map supplied is basic to the point of being meaningless. Hopefully a more detailed original survey is available, as comparing new data against the one supplied will not give very scientific results. It would have been nice to see the 3D image of their first visit/scan. While a good science project in Ice caves, the project was only token support due to very small team and BCRA funding (which has been applied for) is thought more appropriate.

GPF Feedback:
Interesting concept of "a family expedition", but, as seems to have been proven by last years trip, may be a good combination of allowing cavers with young families to still do expeditions whilst also making it fun for the children who will be the next generation of cavers. One negative comment - the application (specifically the personnel section) was incompletely filled in and needs to be improved for future applications.

The application process is open for over 5 months before the deadline, with the ability to save and re edit applications prior to final submission. We suggest applicants take advantage of this in the future

GPF Feedback:
Great to see the expedition going back to the same area, slightly surprised it seems mainly to be focused on a diving objective, but with only one diver? Look forward to the results. Application lacking some information e.g. ages of some personnel.

Caves of the Kosua
Stephen Macnamara
£450
GPF Feedback:
Looks a very exciting follow up expedition in a remote area, with a relatively young team. Funding limited due to low number of UK members (5 out of 16). Looking forward to the report. GPF are surprised at the daily cost of the fixer, and the decision to use charter flight from Brisbane. In view of the projected budget short fall these decisions might be worth reviewing.
GPF2015b-004
China Caves- Doshan 2015
Mark Richardson

GPF Feedback:
Looks like a well organised follow up expedition, which has a large number of young caves supported by a few old experienced hands. Glad to see some Alex Pitcher applicants being included.

GPF Feedback:
Level of GPF funding reflects significant funding from other sources. Committee hopes that the necessary permissions and political considerations have been addressed. This was not apparent from the application. It is important to include referee contact numbers so that the committee can raise any concerns during the meeting.

GPF Feedback:
Application GPF2014a-006, after discussion with the Referees, concern was raised about the small number of participants and their relatively low experience (particularly with Ice work and glacial experience). It was decided that the Alex Pitcher awards will be given, but a strong recommendation that the 1st leg of the proposed trip until after they have gained more experience from the legs 2&3 where they will be joining a larger expedition.
