Seating & Capacity
Randomized seating charts are available for many (not all) fixed-seating classrooms via the
Registrar’s WebRoster
Classroom capacity varies and seating may be stationary or fixed. Specifics can be found on each classroom’s page.
Lecterns
Each classroom managed by Classroom Technologies has an instructor lectern or equivalent. The exact specifications vary depending on when a room was last updated and what kind of lectern was available/standard at the time.
Standard lectern equipment includes:
Windows computer
Laptop A/V inputs (VGA, HDMI)
External XLR microphone input
Extron touch-panel controller
Blu-ray player
Auxiliary A/V inputs (RCA)
USB microphone
Document camera
Web camera
Active Learning Classrooms typically have touch-screen monitors installed for use with the lectern computer.
Important:
HDMI/VGA adaptors are
NOT
provided; if you need an adaptor to connect via VGA or HDMI, you will need to bring your own.
Software
Valid licenses are required for all software installations.
OIT will only install software that has been properly licensed; note that many applications require special licensing for lab use. ‘Demo’ or ‘evaluation’ software is not available in campus labs or classrooms. There are no exceptions.
To provide adequate lead time for software test/installation in computer labs, instructors should notify OIT of all software needs at the time of making a lab reservation. All software installation requires a
minimum lead time of two weeks
and the more lead time possible, the better!
Due to high demand, software requests made just before or during the scheduled quarter may be significantly delayed. Instructors are strongly advised to raise installation requests as early as possible.
Classroom and lab computers are configured with standard sets of software. Specialized software may be available in some locations.

Audio/visual tools
Microphones are available in all large lecture halls and larger classrooms and can be lapel, handheld, lectern-mounted, or a combination of these three options. Some smaller classrooms do not have installed microphone systems.
Classrooms have one or more electric and/or manual projection screens and data projectors. Most screens are in 16:9 widescreen format.
Active Learning Classrooms may also have multiple displays available. Some Active Learning classrooms have dedicated laptops and displays at some or all student (group) tables.
Audio/visual controls including content sources (e.g. lectern PC, laptop, document camera), volume settings, and more are available through the touchscreen Extron control panel found on each lectern.
Exact specifications vary and more details can be found on individual classroom pages where applicable.
Wireless presentation
Zoom can be used as a workaround for wireless presentation: run a Zoom meeting while logged in on the lectern PC, join that meeting from a second device (e.g. laptop, iPad, other tablet) where you are not logged in* to Zoom, just participating as a guest, promote the guest attendee to co-host, and then use Zoom’s built-in screen sharing to display content from that device.
Some active learning classrooms have an additional wireless presentation option: Mersive Solstice.
User Guide for Mersive Solstice
Mersive Solstice single-page quick guide
Also available in
UCI Canvas Commons
; search for “Mersive”
* The reason we advise staying logged out on the second device is that Zoom allows you to be logged in on one device of each type (PC, tablet, and phone) at a time. If you are signed in on both the lectern PC and a second laptop, the first device will be logged out automatically.
Writing surfaces
Classrooms may include one or more
whiteboards
(sliding and/or stationary), chalkboards, and/or tempered glass boards as writing surfaces. Some Active Learning Classrooms also have whiteboards on rolling stands, and/or small portable whiteboards at each student (group) table.
Whiteboard markers are not provided
in any classrooms
; if left in classrooms, whiteboard markers tend to be removed quickly so instructors are advised to bring markers to the classroom and take those markers with them when they leave. Instructors may request wide-tipped whiteboard markers from Classroom Technologies; to request markers, please
Document cameras
are either installed or available on request and can be used to project handwriting either from a horizontal surface or on a whiteboard which the document camera is angled to capture.

Most of the 14 large lecture halls are equipped with
Wacom or equivalent writing tablets
(with the caveat that our inventory is limited and technical issues may result in removal of those tablets either temporarily or permanently), which mirror the lectern PC and can be used to annotate over PC content. Some classrooms have capacitive touch monitors at the lecterns, which may be suitable for some general annotation, but are not equivalent to tablets or suitable for all handwriting.

Instructors can use the lectern HDMI cable or
wireless presentation options
to
share from iPads and other supported tablets
, which can be effective solutions for presenting handwritten content.
Audience response
Poll Everywhere is available campus-wide and can be employed in or beyond any campus classroom at no out-of-pocket cost to students.
iClicker base stations are available on request. Students must purchase a remote or subscription in order to participate in iClicker activities (with the exception of iClicker’s free, attendance-only option – see:
iClicker Attendance
).
For detailed information about Poll Everywhere, iClicker, and related tools, see:
Polling @ UCI
Recording
UCI Replay
is the campus name for UCI’s lecture capture service.
YuJa
is the software that powers this service. YuJa is installed on all general assignment classroom PCs and is available for
for use on personal devices as well.
Features include:
Capture your screen, connected camera, and/or audio
Integrate with Canvas to easily embed recordings
Automatic closed captioning and slide text recognition
Trim recordings, adjust captions, and make other general edits through any web browse
Pre-installed in classrooms & available for download to your own computer
Private media libraries
Mobile-optimized recordings
Option to schedule automated recording in some classrooms
While YuJa was brought to campus with lecture capture in mind, it’s not limited to that purpose. Anyone with an active, current UCInetID can sign in and create an account. Students, for instance, are welcome to create YuJa accounts by signing in through
uci.yuja.com
. If an instructor
enables the YuJa integration in Canvas
, they and their students can
embed their own recordings
anywhere within Canvas where they have access to edit/post content, and where the YuJa integration is available.
In the 14 large lecture halls, instructors have the option of
requesting automatic, scheduled recording
. These recordings are made possible by additional hardware installed in those rooms. That hardware receives dedicated feeds duplicating 1) the data sent to the projection system and 2) the data sent through the classroom speaker system.
Beyond recording, YuJa also supports creating and embedded quizzes within recordings. Through the YuJa Canvas integration, quizzes can be assigned to students and automatically graded in the Canvas gradebook. For more about pedagogy and teaching strategies incorporating YuJa quizzes, see
Division of Teaching Excellence & Innovation – YuJa
Printing
Printing is available in campus computer labs and select Library locations via Wēpa print kiosks. You can print from any device with an internet connection or pull documents from
Google Drive, Office 365,

Hours & access
Classrooms are unlocked (either through a scheduled system or coordination with Facilities Management) during scheduled class times. Some classrooms may be unlocked outside those times, while others may be locked outside class meeting times on an as-needed basis.
Labs are open for drop-in use when classes are not scheduled or in session. Schedules are posted outside each lab entrance.
Labs are generally locked and alarmed outside building and lab hours. Exceptions may be made during peak use periods (beginning and end of quarters).
Normally, only students who are officially enrolled in the class that has reserved a particular classroom or lab may use the facility during the period of reservation. Other students may enter at the discretion of the instructor.
Maximum hours
The maximum
number of hours that can be reserved across all OIT scheduled labs is 20 hours per week per class, or the equivalent of 2 hours per student per week, whichever is less.
For example, a class with 50 students is allowed to reserve labs for a maximum of 4 hours per week (using 25 computer seats per lab). Labs may only be reserved Monday – Friday, 8am-6pm. Labs are kept open for drop-in use in the evenings.
Student lab time guidelines
The actual lab time students need depends on the software they are using, tasks they are completing, and their individual experience. Inn general, we recommend instructors plan for each student to have lab access approximately 2 hours per week.
Scheduling & lab reservation
Classrooms
Classrooms are scheduled for Registrar-listed courses via Department Schedulers.
Classrooms may be requested for instructional use associated with a class (e.g. for a final exam review session outside the normal class meeting schedule) at no cost, or for non-instructional uses for a recharge fee. For current pricing, see
Smart Classroom – Pricing on the OIT website
Some classrooms may be requested for non-instructional uses (e.g. clubs or other campus events) via the
Student Center & Event Services
Labs
Reservations
Important: Before making a reservation request, please confirm that it adheres to the
Lab Scheduling Policy
Labs may be scheduled for a class only at the actual time the class meets as stated in the
Registrar’s Schedule of Classes
. If students need more time for homework and TA guidance, they may utilize the drop-in hours after 6:00pm or when other classes are not scheduled.
If scheduling a lab for the entire quarter, please note it will be scheduled during weeks 1 – 10 of the quarter; finals week is not included by default. To reserve time during finals week, please submit a separate request.
To schedule a lab for a class:

Special Arrangements
Class-related special arrangements (e.g., additional equipment, new software, etc.) must be coordinated with OIT with sufficient advance notice. Please contact OIT at 824-2222 or oit@uci.edu with any questions.
Partitioned Labs (ALP 3600 & 3610, MSTB 210 & 226)
ALP 3600 & 3610, and MSTB 210 & 226 are partitioned spaces that can either be used separately (accommodating 45 students each) or as larger, combined spaces (accommodating 90+ students).
The instructor workstations in ALP 3600 and MSTB 210 allow the instructor to control the projector in both those spaces separately or as a combined space with the partitions opened.
Classroom Technologies staff manage the schedule for opening and closing the partitions. The partitions should not be operated otherwise. For questions about scheduling partition open/close, please
Assistance
Every classroom has a phone installed near the lectern or instructor station with Classroom Technologies’ contact information posted prominently.
Instructors can dial 48833 from that phone (or 949-824-8833 from any phone) to reach our help line so we can assist as promptly as possible. For less urgent/immediate needs, please email smartclassrooms@uci.edu or
use our webform
Feedback
Toward the end of each Fall, Winter, and Spring quarter, Classroom Technologies invites instructors and TAs listed in the Registrar’s Schedule or Classes to complete a survey about everything from classroom cleanliness to the state of classroom technology. This data helps us identify priorities for repairs and enhancements as we move through and refresh the technology and other elements of the campus general assignment classrooms over time.
The survey includes an option for respondents to request follow-up. We reach out via email to everyone who selected that option as we review the data. We typically complete that follow-up and post the summarized survey results within the first few weeks of the subsequent quarter.
While our quarterly survey is our primary mechanism for soliciting regular feedback, you don’t have to wait for a survey;
at any time if you have any classroom questions, comments, or feedback. For any
immediate issues
during
class, please dial 48833 from the phone mounted on the wall near the lectern to reach our help line so we can assist as promptly as possible.
Quarterly survey template
We endeavor to keep the survey consistent over time to the extent possible, tweaking it when needed to reflect major changes (e.g. removal of changes in classroom equipment standards).

Winter 2020-Spring 2020: No data due to COVID-19 move to remote teaching/learning
UCI moved all classes online due to COVID-19 starting with the Spring 2020 quarter. While Winter 2020 classes were held in-person, the classroom feedback survey was not distributed because all efforts were needed to support the campus in the rapid switch to remote instruction that Spring. The survey was resumed in Fall 2021 with the return of more in-person classes.
