Conservation Student awarded QEST Scholarship
Huge congratulations to recent
BA (Hons) Conservation: Stone, Wood and Decorative Surfaces
graduate Thomas Yeung, who has been awarded a QEST Scholarship to continue his studies on our
MA Conservation
programme.
Thomas’ work will focus on complex lacquer objects through in-depth research into lacquer materials, techniques, and conservation practices.
Thomas shared: “The QEST scholarship is supporting my MA studies in Conservation, specialising in both Asian and European lacquer. I strongly believe that a lacquer conservator must also be a maker—hands-on experience with materials and techniques deeply informs condition analysis and conservation approaches.
With QEST’s support, I can continue the momentum I began in my first year of BA studies, developing skills in both lacquer making and conservation. Studying at City & Guilds of London Art School has allowed me to explore Japanning (European lacquer) while drawing on my prior experience with Urushi (Asian lacquer), integrating both traditions into my craft. I am especially grateful for the opportunity to learn from leading experts in lacquer conservation.
With vital support from QEST for rigorous study, I am dedicated to conserving culturally significant lacquer craft and objects—testaments to centuries of intricate global exchange—through my dual practice as both a maker and conservator.”
Thomas’ aim is to become a leading specialist and educator in lacquer conservation, and to share his knowledge with the next generation. You can find out more about Thomas’ practice on his profile on the
QEST website
Well done Thomas!
