Core software
is a nebulous term that refers to a subset of
software projects
without which the OpenStreetMap project would be unable to function day to day. As such, the
Operations Working Group
has a hand in running the main openstreetmap.org installations of some of these software packages. The
OpenStreetMap Foundation
also retains a
paid Core Software Development Facilitator
to promote the health of several of these projects.
openstreetmap-website
(formerly known as the "Rails port") and
openstreetmap-cgimap
are usually included in this category. Less well-known projects include
mod_tile
osmdbt
, and
planet-dump-ng
. Historically, some have also regarded certain renderers (such as
Osmarender
and
OpenStreetMap Carto
), geocoders (
Name finder
Nominatim
), and editors (
Potlatch
JOSM
iD
) as core projects, due to overlap among developers. However, this is less common today, as many editors and data consumers have grown into significant projects in their own right with a degree of independence from day-to-day operations.
