These sounds were contrasted as long and short ones in the previous studies. The paper offers a brief review of works on the formation and development of the Turkic consonantism and the problem of long consonants in the ancient and modern Turkic languages. The author focuses on the relevance of the short – long opposition for the Teleut stop consonants in the intervocalic position and makes an assumption that their length depends on their position and morphonology. The Turkic languages have two non-mutually exclusive types of consonant length: the qualitative length of voiceless consonants caused by aspiration and the quantitative length of the geminates caused by the extended closure. The research involved a Praat comparative analysis of sonograms of lexical stimuli that illustrated the length of [k] and [t] in intervocalic positions. The preliminary conclusion ...

Swadesh later whittled his list down to 100 items. The Swadesh list, however, was based mainly on intuition, according to Martin Haspelmath and Uri Tadmor. Translations of the Swadesh list into a set of languages allow researchers to quantify the interrelatedness of those languages. The Swadesh list is named after the U.S. linguist Morris Swadesh. It is used in lexicostatistics (the quantitative assessment of the genealogical relatedness of languages) and glottochronology (the dating of language divergence). The Leipzig-Jakarta list is a 100-word word list used by linguists to test the degree of chronological separation of languages by comparing words that are resistant to borrowing. The Leipzig-Jakarta list became available in 2009. In 2016 we have undertaken a set of fieldtrips to the areas of traditional dwelling of the Tomsk Tatars funded by the SOAS ELDP project, aiming at gathering fieldtrip material including the Leipzig-Jakarta list. It's worth mentioning that the dialect of the Tomask Tatars has been undeservingly forgotten by linguists who take up Turkic varieties of Siberia. The last profound study of Eushta dialect, which comprises the Tomsk Tatar dialect cluster along with the idioms spoken Takhtamyshevo and Chyornaya Rechka was carried out in the 1960 s. The results show that the dialect complex spoken by indigenous Turkic peoples who reside in the Tomsk area in the villages of Eushta, Chernaya Rechka, Takhtamyshevo, Boriki, Timiryazevo, Barabinka, Kaftanchikovo and some others, as well as the city of Tomsk, though retaining basic linguistic features of the North Kyptchak languages and very close to Kazan Tatar literary language, manifest a set of unique lexical data, which differ even within the Tomsk Tatar dialect cluster, e.g. the word-egg‖ has 3 different variants: jymyrqa (literary Kazan), kukaj and tygam which are regional and have no direct parallels in the adjacent Siberian Turkic cognates, which gives a broad field for subsequent comparative study.

In this article we will analyze the perception and usage of colour names and numerals in the Japanese language and compare it to some aspects of the Western perception. Let us revise the structure of Japanese colour names and their significance within the language and culture. Most words denoting colours in Japanese are built using the following pattern: [noun] + 色(iro), where色 (iro) means colour. The noun in this construction usually denotes an object from which the colour name can be derived. For example: 灰色 (hai + iro; 灰 (hai) = ash; literally "ash-colour") 水色 (mizu + iro; 水 (mizu) = water; literally "water-colour")

The Altai Republic borders with such Russian territories like Altai Kray, Kemerovo Region, the Tyva Republic, the Khakas Republic and also foreign countries Kazakhstan, Mongolia and China. The settlement type is mountain valley: almost every large village starts a chain of settlements stretching along the valley of the rivers. The population of the settlements is usually from 500 to 15,000. Mountain Altai is characterized by sharply continental climate, different in some of its regions.According to the location and direction of the ridges the Altai Mountains can be divided into two parts - the northern and the southern. In the southern part there are the highest ridges: Katun, Saylyugem and South Chui which constitute a centerline. The ridges of the southern Altai rise from 2500 meters in the west and up to 3000-4500 meters in the east. The mountain Belukha...

Research paper thumbnail of The frequency-domain method of calculation for the pulsed electromagnetic field in a conductive ferromagnetic plate

IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering, 2017

The technique for parameters determination of magnetic skin effect on ferromagnetic plate at a sp... more The technique for parameters determination of magnetic skin effect on ferromagnetic plate at a specified pulse of magnetic field intensity on the plate surface is proposed. It is based on a frequency-domain method and could be applied for a pulsing transformer, a dynamoelectric pulse generator and a commutating inductor that contains an imbricated core. Due to this technique, such plate parameters as specific heat loss energy, the average power of this energy and the plate temperature raise, the magnetic flux attenuation factor and the plate q-factor could be calculated. These parameters depend on the steel type, the amplitude, the rms value, the duration and the form of the magnetic field intensity impulse on the plate surface. The plate thickness is defined by the value of the flux attenuation factor and the plate q-factor that should be maximal. The reliability of the proposed technique is built on a common frequency-domain usage applicable for pulse transient study under zero boundary conditions of the electric circuit and the conformity of obtained results with the sinusoidal steady-state mode.

Ethnolinguistic Research Into Siberian-Turkic Folklore Proper Names (Based on Shor Cosmogonist Myths and Legends)

The ethnolinguistic approach to the proper name interpretation is widely accepted in modern onomastic studies. As in the folklore of any other indigenous people, the Shor folklore proper names do not only denote the character, but also carry a lot of hidden information revealing traditional beliefs and culture of the Shor people. Folklore proper names classification is determined by two main principles, which are genre affiliation (myths and legends) and characteristics of object denotation (anthroponyms, toponyms and other classes of proper names). There are few accidental folklore proper names, most proper names are unique in their own way and have their own origin, both linguistic and cultural.

There is solid evidence that the ancestors of modern Yakuts and their language originate from the Central Asian steppe Proto-Turkic community of the 1 st century BC. South Siberian Turkic varieties have not been studied as thoroughly, but they are expected to have traces of some non-Turkic language substratum. The analysis of the Teleut gene pool has revealed two different components of the Turkic and non-Turkic nature, which gives reason to consider non-Turkic elements in Teleut as aboriginal. The gene pool study of the Chulym Turks is expected to contribute to the issue of language history and Chulym Turkic lexicon which is etymologically vague from the Turkic viewpoint.

Involutionary Trends in Contemporary Teleut?

The fieldtrip data collected in 2013-2014 enable to generally conclude about the preservation rate of Teleut in different age groups and basic spheres of its use. A large impact of the predominant Russian language on Teleut is detected resulting in the big amount of lexical borrowings, which have replaced the original lexicon, and the syntactical distortion of the Teleut speech. Asymmetrical Russian-Teleut bilingualism with the prevalence of Russian is claimed the main reason of this phenomenon.
