Dr. Datta is surgical oncologist specializing in the treatment of hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) and gastrointestinal (GI) cancers at the University of Miami. He has specialized training in resecting cancers of the stomach, pancreas, liver, bile ducts, intestine, and esophagus using minimally invasive robotic surgery, as well as using traditional open surgical techniques. He treats the following malignancies and conditions:
1. Stomach & Esophageal Cancers: Gastric adenocarcinoma, Esophageal cancer, Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GIST), Neuroendocrine or Carcinoid tumors
2. Liver Metastasis from Colorectal Cancer: Liver resection, Liver ablation, Hepatic Arterial Infusion Pump (HAIP) placement for intra-arterial delivery of chemotherapy directly to the liver
3. Cancers of the Liver: Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, Hepatocellular carcinoma, Neuroendocrine Tumor metastatic to the liver, non-colorectal non-neuroendocrine liver metastasis
4. Bile Duct Cancers: Extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, Hilar cholangiocarcinoma, Choledochal cysts, Neuroendocrine metastasis to the biliary tree
5. Pancreatic Cancers: Pancreatic adenocarcinoma, Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumors (PNET), Pancreatic Cysts—Cystadenoma, Mucinous Cystic Neoplasm, Intraductal Papillary Mucinous Neoplasm (IPMN)
6. Other Cancers and Conditions: Diseases of the spleen requiring splenectomy, Adrenal Tumors (Functional Adenoma, Pheochromocytoma, Adrenocortical Cancer), Retroperitoneal Sarcoma
Research Interests
Dr. Datta’s research interests are focused HPB and GI malignancies, and investigating how the molecular alterations that define these malignancies orchestrate the immune microenvironment. The ultimate goal is to leverage this information to develop novel immunotherapies that are tailored to each patient’s individual tumor.
1. Molecular and immunogenomic stratification of oncologic prognosis (e.g., survival, chemotherapy response) in colorectal liver metastasis and gastric cancer survival using genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic approaches. The goal is to develop biomarkers to enable precision cancer treatment
2. Investigating the immune repercussions of "high risk" genomic alterations in GI malignancy. The following is a broad overview of several ongoing projects in the laboratory:
Investigate how RAS and p53 signaling cooperate to orchestrate the immune microenvironment
in silico
in vitro
and
in vivo
. While the implications of RAS-p53 signaling cooperativity are likely tumor-agnostic, we will focus on GI malignancies, where these mutations are most common (e.g., pancreas cancer, metastatic colon cancer, and gastric cancer). This line of investigation is based on exciting translational data from our work in metastatic colorectal cancer patients, which are being published in the near future (Datta et al.,

Investigate how combined inhibition of MAPK and JAK-STAT3 signaling pathways reprograms the suppressive immune microenvironment in pancreatic cancer
utilizing orthotopic and genetically engineered mouse models of pancreatic cancer.
3. Develop novel immunotherapeutic strategies targeting high risk GI malignancy, particularly in a neoadjuvant window-of-opportunity or treatment-refractory setting.
4. Develop a genomically annotated biorepository of banked tumor tissue from GI cancers.
5. Clinical research projects examining comparative effectiveness of various surgical and medical treatments in gastroesophageal and HPB malignancy.

About the Provider
Dr. Datta joined the faculty at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in 2019. He graduated Summa cum Laude from Colgate University in Hamilton, NY and attended Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, TN where he earned his MD and was inducted in the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) National Honor Society. He completed his residency in General Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA, during which he completed a post-doctoral research fellowship in tumor immunology in the laboratory of Brian Czerniecki. He subsequently completed a fellowship in Complex General Surgical Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he focused on hepatobiliary, pancreatic, and gastric malignancies.
Dr. Datta is a surgeon-scientist, and divides his time equally between his clinical activities and basic/translational laboratory research. Dr. Datta is a board certified surgeon by the American Board of Surgery. He sees patients at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center near downtown Miami and at Lennar Foundation Medical Center in Coral Gables, FL. He operates at University of Miami Hospital and Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Datta is attentive, listens and throughly explains everything. Outstanding surgeon who spent the time with my husband & I answering all our questions. My surgical outcome has been more than I could have hoped for. He & his team even prayed with me in the pre-op area as I asked God to bless each one of them during my 7 hour surgery.
