Turks more easily in the Anatolian field. These first dictionaries were prepared in
Arabic-Persian and mostly in verse. However, it has been seen that Arabic-Persian
dictionaries are insufficient in teaching Persian and there is a need for PersianTurkish dictionaries with Turkish equivalents. From the beginning of the 15th
century, Persian-Turkish dictionary writing continued increasingly. The meanings
of words in the comprehensive dictionaries written in the 15th and 16th centuries
are exemplified by Persian couplets. Prose dictionaries prepared in the second half
of the 16th century and the 17th century and later were written by summarizing and
compiling dictionaries written in the 15th and 16th centuries. Many dictionaries
written in this period contain information on Persian grammar, literary and prosody.
In addition to this, comprehensive prose dictionaries from Persian to Turkish were
also written, giving the pronunciation of Persian words, the commonly used
meanings of the words, as well as explaining the words in poetic theme, trope and
metaphor giving their Turkish equivalents. In such dictionaries, Persian proverbs,
wise words, idioms and rarely used Persian words are explained and these are
exemplified with Persian couplets.
One of the dictionaries from aforemetioned with a rich content, consisting of
idioms, proverbs and poetic theme from Persian to Turkish, is the dictionary named
Majma al Amsal. In Majma al Amsal, which is one of the most comprehensive
compilation dictionaries, which was written in prose style in the 18th century and
includes Arabic expressions, phrases and explanations from time to time, 10.101
idioms, proverbs, metaphors and allusions are given and for some articles examples
are given from the poems of many Persian poets. In this context, there are 2510
witness couplets titled couplet, verse, rubai and stanza in the dictionary. Majma al
Amsal was compiled in 1764 by Khalis Ibrahim Afandi, one of the professors who
knew Persian and Arabic from the Pasarofca region around Belgrade.
In the study, the lexicography understanding of Khalis Ibrahim Afandi was
tried to be determined through the method he followed while compiling Majma al
Amsal and the features of Majma al Amsal in terms of structure and content were
emphasized.
