Overview
The Untamed (陈情令) is a 2019 Chinese xianxia drama series adapted from the novel Mo Dao Zu Shi by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu. Starring Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo, it consists of 50 episodes and premiered on Tencent Video on June 27, 2019.
The series scored 7.7 on Douban with over 1.8 million ratings, a remarkable comeback from its initial 4.8 at premiere. It became the biggest hit of summer 2019 and one of the most-rated Chinese dramas on Douban.
Plot
The world is divided among five major cultivation clans: Gusu Lan, Yunmeng Jiang, Qinghe Nie, Qishan Wen, and Lanling Jin. The tyrannical Wen clan dominates the others.
Wei Wuxian (Xiao Zhan), a carefree disciple of the Jiang clan, meets the stoic Lan Wangji (Wang Yibo) of the Lan clan. Despite their opposite personalities, they form a deep bond as they face the Wen clan oppression together.
Wei Wuxian turns to unorthodox cultivation methods, becoming the feared Yiling Patriarch. He is ultimately besieged by the other clans and falls at the Burial Mounds. Sixteen years later, he is resurrected and reunites with Lan Wangji to uncover the truth behind the conspiracy.
