Synopsis

Lijiang Old Town was founded in the 13th century with over 800 years of history. A UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site since 1997, famous for Naxi architecture and its network of bridges and waterways.

Overview

The Old Town of Lijiang (丽江古城), located in Lijiang City, Yunnan Province, is a cultural treasure with over 800 years of history. The old town was first built during the late Song to early Yuan Dynasty, flourished during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and consists of Dayan Old Town, Shuhe Ancient Town, and Baisha Ancient Town. On December 4, 1997, the Old Town of Lijiang was inscribed on UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage List, filling a gap in China's World Cultural Heritage roster of historic cities.

Lijiang Old Town sits in the center of the Lijiang Basin at an elevation of 2,416 meters, surrounded by mountains. Built following the Naxi ethnic philosophy that "humans and nature are brothers," the town cleverly adapts to the terrain and hydrology. Unlike most Chinese cities, it has no city walls — the Naxi people call this place "Gongbenzhi," meaning "a place to carry goods for trade."

Lijiang Old Town is world-famous for its unique Naxi residential architecture, its network of small bridges and flowing waterways, the profound Dongba cultural heritage, and the magnificent backdrop of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

  • Naxi Ancient Music: Known as a "living fossil of music," blending Tang-Song dynasty music with Daoist musical elements

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yulong Xueshan) is located about 15 kilometers north of Lijiang Old Town. It is the southernmost snow mountain in the Northern Hemisphere, with its main peak, Shanzidou, reaching 5,596 meters. The mountain range consists of 13 peaks that, when viewed from Lijiang Old Town, resemble a giant dragon winding through the sky.

The Jade Dragon Snow Mountain scenic area includes the Glacier Park, Spruce Meadow, Yak Meadow, and Blue Moon Valley. Blue Moon Valley gets its name from the dreamlike blue color of its lake water and is nicknamed "Little Jiuzhaigou."
