Finding My Voice in Sports Broadcasting at Cardiff Met

MSc Sport Broadcast
Sport
I’m Fathema, but everyone knows me as Fats. I am currently studying MSc Sport Broadcasting, and I still can’t believe this course exists! I have known Cardiff Met as a sports University and with my love for sports there was no other choice. However, when I first approached regarding this degree, truth be told I wasn’t doing well mentally and so I decided to take a gap year to focus on myself. The year flew and it was that time again to apply, and I was lucky enough to get chosen for the
S4C bursary
as well, which made my choice easier. Not only did I love sport, but I was keen to get the Welsh language back on my tongue!
While on this bursary, I’ve been grateful enough to have worked for several different companies with so many talented people such as Media Atom, Whisper, Boom Cymru, covering a variety of sports. I have had the opportunity to see what live sports are really like, working both on the OB trucks and outside in roles like a match logger, floor managing and so much more.
I’m very excited to go into the world of work as I believe this course has given me invaluable experiences and has helped boost my confidence in becoming a sports presenter. Not only has this course given me many opportunities to present, but it has also allowed me to understand what it is like to be behind the camera, as I believe that to be a good presenter, it is good to know about each role. For someone who has never touched a camera or edited, in a matter of months, I have learned so many skills such as using a camera, editing, creating sport content and lots more which is all important when it comes to job opportunities.
This course will challenge you, but in all the good ways. It will bring out skills you didn’t know you had. If I can give you any advice, it is to take advantage of EVERY opportunity. The fact that your lecturers are still working in the sports industry and have years of experience in them tells you a lot about what you will be learning and how you really are in the best hands. To add to this, imagine being in a class full of people who love sports like you? Because it is possible. This course makes it possible!
I was hesitant when applying the second time, doubting I would not perform as well as I’d like to due to struggling with my mental health and would I even fit into an industry that is heavily male dominated? Would I even fit into the industry where I don’t see someone who wears the hijab or looks anything like me? However, it’s the best decision I have made and if people like us don’t break the barriers, then who will? I’m so grateful for this course and the
S4C Bursary
for allowing me to do just that!
