We Maintain and Update the CFI Code
The
ISO 10962 Classification of Financial Instruments (CFI)
is a globally recognized standard for describing all financial instruments, including traditional securities, derivatives, and innovative products.
The six-letter code describes the structure and function of each financial instrument in a consistent way. The code defines when a financial or referential instrument is issued and remains unchanged during its entire life. However, events such as the changing of voting rights or ownership restrictions decided at a stockholders' meeting can cause a CFI code to change.
As the maintenance agency for the CFI code, SIX manages updates and enhancements. We publish these updates in various formats like
spreadsheets, CSV, JSON-LD,
and
TTL

Your Questions Answered
If a security has been lost, stolen or destroyed, it can be stopped at SIX. Securities reported for stopping include listed and unlisted Swiss securities, foreign securities if they are traded on the Swiss Stock Exchange and Euro bonds. The stopping does not mean that the instrument is blocked by authorities or is declared null and void. The stopping only means that the owner has reported a security missing and that legal proceedings might be taken to declare the security null and void or that a security might have been declared null and void in an official publication after legal proceedings.
A stopping announcement can help find missing instruments and, on the other hand, warns banks and their clients against acquiring such securities. SIX does not accept responsibility for the correctness, accuracy or completeness of the information on a security, as it cannot verify its accuracy.
After SIX has received a stopping message, the instrument is added to the SIX data base and is available to clients via our distribution platforms and our display product.
Contact your
local client support
if you have a stopping announcement.

ISO 4217
Currency
ensures compatibility across systems and geographies, provides historical references, and minor unit info. It enables seamless global communication and compliant transactions.
The ISO 4217 standard for currency codes provides clarity and precision in financial transactions, avoiding confusion and reducing errors.
It is recognized world-wide by all operators and computer systems in the financial and banking industries. The six-letter code describes the structure and function of each financial instrument in a consistent way. The CFI is used by financial regulators in requisitioning and analyzing reporting data and to conduct transparency calculations to ensure safe and fair financial markets.
The ISO CFI standard is revised every 5 years. However, the Maintenance Agency upon the CFI Advisory Group’s decisions can update CFI table data elements based on market demand.
SIX Financial Information Ltd as the Secretariat of the Maintenance Agency for CFI.
The CFI code provides the most comprehensive information possible whilst maintaining the manageability of the code. One of the essential rules of this CFI concept is that the classification is determined by the intrinsic characteristics of the respective financial instruments. This principle avoids confusion arising from different linguistic usage as well as redundancy, while allowing objective comparison of the instruments across all domestic markets. They standardize identification, are independent of local conventions, reduce redundancy, and enable objective cross-market comparisons.
