Synopsis

A garden on the sea at the southwestern corner of Xiamen, this small island covers an area of only 1.87 square kilometers. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2017 and is renowned as the "Island of Pianos" and the "Museum of International Architecture."

Overview

Gulangyu Island, originally named Yuanshazhou, is located in the southwest corner of Xiamen City, Fujian Province, facing Xiamen Island across the sea. It covers an area of approximately 1.88 square kilometers and has a permanent population of less than 20,000. In July 2017, at the 41st session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, "Gulangyu: Historic International Settlement" was inscribed on the World Heritage List, becoming China's 52nd World Heritage site.

Despite its small size, this island has earned accolades such as "Garden on the Sea," "Museum of International Architecture," "Hometown of Music," and "Piano Island." It preserves over a thousand historical buildings of diverse styles, blending Chinese, European, and Southeast Asian architectural influences, bearing witness to the unique history of Sino-Western cultural exchange in modern Chinese history.

History

The history of Gulangyu can be traced back to the Song and Yuan dynasties. During the Southern Song Dynasty, the island was known as "Wulongyu." From the Ming Dynasty to the present, it has been called "Gulangyu," a name derived from a sea-eroded cave on the southwest of the island where the waves crashing against it produce a sound resembling drumbeats.

After the signing of the Treaty of Nanjing in 1842, Xiamen became a treaty port, and Gulangyu gradually developed into a foreign settlement. In 1903, Gulangyu officially became an International Settlement, with 13 countries establishing consulates here. A large influx of foreigners, overseas Chinese, and missionaries brought Western architectural styles, music culture, and lifestyles, which blended with local Chinese culture, forming a unique historic international community.

After the victory in the War of Resistance against Japan in 1945, the Gulangyu International Settlement was formally reclaimed. Today, over a thousand historical buildings on the island remain well-preserved, with 931 of them listed on the historical architectural conservation register.

On this small island of less than 20,000 people, over a hundred musical families have emerged, producing renowned musicians such as Yin Chengzong, Xu Feiping, and Chen Zuohuang. One in every three households on the island owns a piano, and music has become an integral part of life for Gulangyu residents.

The island is home to China's first Piano Museum, which houses nearly a hundred antique pianos from around the world, including rare gold-gilded pianos, the world's earliest square pianos, and the earliest and largest upright pianos. Cultural Significance

Gulangyu's inscription as a "Historic International Settlement" on the World Heritage List highlights its core value in showcasing the unique community form that emerged in China's coastal port cities from the mid-19th to mid-20th centuries during the process of Sino-Western cultural integration. This small island was once a forward-looking window for China to "open its eyes to the world" and also one of the important birthplaces of modern music education in China. In 2025, mainstream media like Xinhua Net featured special reports on Gulangyu's music culture, demonstrating the vitality of this poetic "Piano Island" in the new era.
