2026 - Samuel Noel Postlethwait Award - Teaching
This Teaching Section award honors the work of Samuel Postlethwait, who was a botany professor at Purdue University from 1949-1984. His most notable achievement was the development of the audio-tutorial teaching system in the early 1970s. This learner-centered system was a competency-based program based on students achieving specific learning objectives. For each learning module, students listened to botany content with headphones from a cassette player, performed simple labs, and sought help from teaching assistant tutors.

2026 - Graduate Student Dissertation Award in Phylogenetic Comparative Plant Biology
The Botanical Society of America seeks applications for the Graduate Student Dissertation Award in Phylogenetic Comparative Plant Biology.
Thanks to an anonymous donor and long-time BSA member, the Society established an endowed fund to support the Ph.D. research of graduate students in the area of phylogenetic comparative plant biology, broadly speaking, from genome to whole organism. Research proposals for the award should have a strong focus on questions that address phylogeny of a group of organisms or trait evolution across one or more clades or biotic relationships between lineages that are phylogenetically patterned. Graduate students in other disciplines whose work may bring novel insights into comparative plant biology are also encouraged to apply.
The award of up to $10,000 may be used to support equipment and supplies, travel for research and to attend meetings, and for summer support. It is anticipated that the award will be made annually.

2026 - Donald R. Kaplan Dissertation Award in Comparative Morphology
The Botanical Society of America is soliciting applications for the Donald R. Kaplan Award in Comparative Morphology. Donald R. Kaplan was a leading researcher in the area of plant form, where he sought to deduce fundamental principles from comparative developmental morphology. He spent most of his professional career at the University of California Berkeley. Through his own work and the work of the many graduate students he mentored, he had a profound effect on the fields of plant development and structure. Donald Kaplan always encouraged his students to work independently, often on projects unrelated to his own research. He believed that students should publish their work independently, and rarely coauthored his students’ papers. Applicants must be

In 2023 a new graduate student research award was established in memory of AJ Harris.
AJ was a long-time member of BSA and and the leading organizer of the Beringia symposium at Botany 2022 in Anchorage, has led Colloquia at Botany Conferences, and was a staunch supporter and promoter of women in botany and diversity at all levels. Her research endeavors were highly integrative, spanning traditional specimen-based science, paleobotany, phylogenomics, biogeography, and computational biology. The new AJ Harris Graduate Student Research Award was given for the first time in 2024 to a GSRA applicant whose research aligned with AJ's and was in the amount of $1200. If you would like to be considered for the AJ Harris award please click the checkbox in the award application.

2025 - Graduate Student Dissertation Award in Phylogenetic Comparative Plant Biology

2025 - Donald R.
