I’m Liberty Andrews, a recent graduate of Cardiff Metropolitan University, where I earned a first-class degree in Sport, Physical Education & Health in July 2024. When I first learned about Cardiff Met, I was drawn to the wealth of opportunities it offers, both academically and in the world of sport, which played a huge role in my decision to study there.
Over the past three years, I genuinely enjoyed my course. The lecturers were incredibly supportive and always available to help whenever needed. Some of the highlights of my time at Cardiff Met included the hands-on learning experience in my first year, where I focused on practical delivery. By my second year, I was able to apply my knowledge during a school placement in Cardiff, and in my third year, I had the opportunity to work with Cardiff Met Aquatics as a Community Development Officer.
My placements were invaluable. They allowed me to explore different work environments and take on various roles. One of my standout experiences came during my second year as a Community Development Officer. This role helped me develop strong communication skills, work with diverse groups, and embrace the independence needed to design and deliver my own water safety programme. I worked with a local school, delivering swimming lessons to children with neurodiverse needs, which was a truly rewarding experience. Through this, I discovered my passion for creating positive change and making a difference in others’ lives, especially in a sporting context.
Before officially graduating, I applied for a role as a School Sport Officer at Cardiff Met Sport and successfully started the job in May 2024, two months before graduation. My undergraduate studies, particularly around the health and wellbeing curriculum, have been incredibly useful in my new role, where I help develop inclusive, leadership-focused projects linked to the new Welsh curriculum, as well as support teachers’ continuing professional development (CPD).
For future students, my advice is simple: take every opportunity that comes your way. The more you put into your degree, the more you’ll get out of it. The staff and community at Cardiff Met are there to help you succeed—so make the most of it.
