* Main research interests of Imma (Immacolata Concezione) Forino focus on interior architecture and furnishing from a spatial and historiographical point of view that embraces the "human events in daily life" as the foundation of the discipline of Interiors. Many reflections investigate power relationships (gender, social classes, workgroups, and beyond) and their "dispositifs" in the history of interiors and furnishings. Critical reflections are developed through a multidisciplinary theoretical approach that combines contributions from different study sectors ranging from art to literature, sociology to management, and cinema to design. In this connection, she wrote monographs, essays in collections and articles published in Italy and abroad. Another line of research called "Interior Reuse Lab", developed as Research by Design in Interior Design Studio at AUIC School, is related to the reuse and design of obsolete or abandoned interior spaces and guidelines for dealing with a stratified architectural context. Finally, other studies concern small abandoned open spaces, "Urban Interstices", considered "open-air rooms" and must be developed and redesigned. She is on the Board of PhD in Architectural, Urban & Interior Design at Politecnico di Milano, on the Scientific Committee of “Op. cit. Selezione della critica d’arte contemporanea” (IT), “AR. Research, Architecture” (SLO) and "Res Mobilis" (ES) journals. In 2012 for the book "Uffici: Interni arredi oggetti" (Einaudi, Turin 2011), she was awarded the First Award Biella Letteratura e Industria for Essays and the Award Selezione ADI Index within the Section Theoretical, Historical, Critical Research and Editorial Projects.

In the present day, as in the past, productive, reproductive, and care work conditions for women's existence are also marked with forms of inclusion or socio-cultural segregation in the organisation of the domestic and public places they inhabit. In the light of contemporary debates on environmental, social and economic issues that show the persistence of solid inequalities, the question of the everyday spaces within which women live and work remains a field of investigation to be carefully explored. Interior spaces are areas for experimentation for a range of design professionals. Working alone or in collaboration, they work at the frontier of several disciplines, permeable to each other, taking the form of dialogues, transfers, and contaminations to produce effects in terms of spaces, perceptions, and emotions. From critical, experimental and contemporary perspectives, this notion of the interior is approached from the scale of the body to that of the world, from the scale of the body to that of the metropolis, in the light of today's problems and practices. Overcoming traditional divisions and oppositions is a matter of thinking and redefining the interior in its relationship with environments, territories and uses, grasping its historical and synchronic relevance and the conceptual operation of the design approach. What constitutes the interior? How do we conceive it? How do we read it? How does it look and feel?

* L’evento pandemico, che ha universalmente attraversato società e continenti, costituisce una sorta di spartiacque non solo nelle discipline mediche, nelle modalità di salvaguardia della salute e nelle attività di prevenzione di altri, futuri contagi, ma ha anche importanti risvolti sul progetto dell’abitazione. Il senso dell’abitare è stato quasi del tutto stravolto dalla drammaticità dell’emergenza sanitaria sin dal suo esordio: la casa – ambito privilegiato della privacy e, talora, spazio produttivo – si è trasformata in tempi rapidissimi in un luogo permanentemente attivo: di lavoro, educativo, performativo, di cura, oltre che in un coatto rifugio dal virus. D’altra parte, si è mostrata essa stessa quale un imprevisto ambiente di contagio fra coabitanti, posti in stretta relazione fisica gli uni con gli altri. Convivere con la pandemia ha fatto venire alla luce nuove esigenze abitative così come, al tempo stesso, si sono evidenziati tutti i limiti dell’edilizia residenziale italiana: per lo più edificata durante il Novecento e, in particolare, nel dopoguerra, secondo diktat che in anni recenti palesavano la loro incongruenza rispetto a una realtà sociale ed economica in continua evoluzione. La distribuzione spaziale, la preordinata definizione degli ambienti, le aperture verso l’esterno, gli spazi di soglia fra la strada e l’edificio, persino gli arredi si sono rilevati per lo più inadeguati sia all’esistenza familiare sia a quella individuale. Il recente conflitto bellico alle soglie dell’Europa ha, d’altra parte, fatto riemergere nuove eventualità per l’abitazione, quale per esempio quella di ospitare per brevi o lunghi periodi i profughi. In sintesi, la casa d’oggi è incalzata a trasformarsi e adeguarsi agli eventi imprevedibili del nuovo Millennio. A fronte di un notevole patrimonio edilizio costruito, la riflessione sul progetto della casa italiana che i saggi qui pubblicati offrono riguarda sia l’intervento sulle preesistenze – da aggiornare, rivedere, ristrutturare – sia la fattibilità di nuovi modelli dell’abitare e le loro corrispondenti tipologie residenziali.

The book is part of  Initiatives consistent with the objectives of the #NewEuropeanBauhaus:
“Urban interstices”—their design—are the topic of this book. What are urban interstices? What different issues, opportunities, roles, and concepts do they deal with?
The book’s five chapters written by urban planners, architects and interior designers provide five different views and keys—Urban rewriting, Architectural threshold, Green rooms, Connecting publicness, Ephemeral devices—and draft a possible path to sound the spectrum of urban interstices’ design in Italy.
Urban space can be “interstitial” in its ambiguous capability of signification in the sense-making process; that is, in the double valence of a mute void—space without signification—or meaningful room—a small and dense universe of suspension. Sometimes the project for interstitial spaces aims to transform the former into the latter. Sometimes, on the other hand, the project makes the interstice an interface, connector, exchanger, membrane, space of interrelation. So that urban interstices become alternatively thresholds and pulsating rooms, and urban catalysts activated by specific design moves and devices. And somehow they also speak
of a general “interstitial” condition of urban space today.
The critical path proposed here is based on the review of seventy contemporary Italian cases. A collection of sixty projects is provided in the second part of the book, while ten cases—two for each thematic key—are explored in brief monographic essays and by interviews with the authors of the projects. They are the subject of the photographic essay, Visual narration by Marco Introini, put in the middle of the book.

(Introduction) __ Identity and diversity – whether cultural, ethnic, religious or political – mark our contemporary global context on a daily basis. We live in an age that might be defined by migration of population flow, by the movement of people, of information, of knowledge. From continent to continent, from nation to nation, from region to region, from city to city, individuals or groups of people overcome geographic borders and cultural or linguistic barriers in search of an economic comfort zone, for a new lease on life for their children, as well as for study purposes, for tourism or to experience new lifestyles and social relations.
Old and new nomads, inscribe traces, invisible or real, on the places they cross and where they stop, generating linguistic, cultural and lifestyle contaminations. They remark, delete or reconfigure their identity, absorbing or rejecting differences. By travelling and stopping – temporarily or permanently – they retrace paths followed by others or design new ones. The shared spaces of metropolitan life are vivified by the interrelationship and exchange between people in a very new process of global intensification. For this reason their definition today requires a total rethinking of the uses and meanings traditionally associated with them, in relation to ongoing socio-cultural changes. Hybridization and multiculturalism, in fact, demand new forms of inclusivity from the spaces that, in the past, had mainly to reflect a sort of collective representation.
From this point of view, the spaces of knowledge, due to their ability to develop cross-cultural intersections, represent the privileged places to investigate the relationship between global nomadism and socio-cultural inclusivity. In fact, no longer exclusively devoted to contemplating art,  or isolated places for reflection and intellectual analysis, museums and libraries have become open places where people meet and exchange ideas, contact zones of contemporary culture. As a result of the constant updating process in which they are involved, they have become the physical nodes where identity and diversity may come into contact and generate new perspectives, ideal places for transnational contemporary socialisation.
The first section of the book ‒ “Questions” ‒ is aimed at highlighting the particular relevance of these places in defining a cultural network in which people’s paths cross, and where ties are constantly knotted and loosened in ever new ways. In this regard, Luca Basso Peressut focuses his attention on the complex phenomenology of contemporary museums, to underline how the constant process of metamorphosis that affects the places of knowledge reflects a transformational balance between the sensitivity of traditions and the necessary thrust of innovation. On the other hand, Imma Forino reads the changes that these places of learning have experienced over time, considering the actors who animate those environments, partakers of the ¬erratic movement that crosses modern global societies, who metaphorically find a ¬ temporary “cultural home” in libraries and museums.
The second section ‒ “Museums” ‒ is specifically dedicated to museographical topics, with two essays that paradigmatically read the changes related to the actual knowledge system. In the first one, Margherita Parati focuses on a specific phenomenon affecting museum narrations and spaces, involving the use and re-evaluation of performing language based on direct action and physical experience. In the second, Stephanie Carminati investigates Jewish museums, to provide an interesting and valuable example of the communication and exhibition strategies that can be put in place in order to communicate its own culture and history from a personal point of view.
The third section tries to outline a possible future for the library in the light of the current phenomena of transnational migration of people as well as information. On the one hand, Daniele Mondiali examines the relationship between the library institution and the new technologies, focusing both on spatial design and the virtual dimension. On the other, Lavinia Dondi describes a sort of renaissance of local libraries, interpreted as meeting places open to the community, as well as key buildings that contributes toward forging the identity of the city.
Finally, the third section ‒ “Hybrid Spaces” ‒, through Jacopo Leveratto’s essay, offers an overview of the institutional, functional and spatial relationships that have existed between museums and libraries, in order to provide the library a future still tied to the text, in a context marked by the dematerialisation of information support. The volume is then concluded by a glossary on global nomadism, edited by Elena Elgani, and an annotated bibliography about the same topic, which integrates the reference list provided by the authors of the anthology.

"INTERIOR WOR(L)DS. This publication wants to outline, in one single narrations made of various contributions, the complex scenery of contemporary Interiors by means of words that best characterize them. Words denominate things, words tell stories, word open to other worlds and to different ways of thinking. We also wish to understand, discuss, and compare everyone’s notes without any need of traditional classification.
While going around, words spread ideas and stimulate images. In a steady process of self-reinvention, words are never definitive and fixed, on the contrary free and open to change. Words represent things and things can be an instrument to create new stories and ideas. As words transform with time in any society, country or economy we should look for the “key words” of Interiors: we will freeze-frame certain ideas, by clarifying and asserting them – always remembering they belong in an open panorama of thought.

"In a global, complex, stratified and constantly evolving reality, Interiors as theoretical discipline and design praxis are undergoing profound transformations. This differently articulated scenario relates and connects even more to various disciplinary spheres, such as anthropology, sociology, economy, technology, communication and arts.
Critical and theoretical reflections, together with applicative experimentations and didactic experiences converge in mapping places and subjects for international research in the field of Interiors. Originated form a research activity carried out by the Research Doctorate in Interiors Architecture and Exhibition Design (cycle 22) at the Politecnico di Milano, focus was centred on three strongly characterised theoretical and practical fields, such as Domestic, Exhibit and Retail.
Individual, collective, local and global issues substantiate orientations and strategies for the current research on Interiors: it is an opportunity for debating over the lively actuality and future perspective on the subject, between scholars and researchers that operate with the most renowned research institutions and universities worldwide, at the Interiors Forum World Conference 2008 at the Facoltà di Architettura e Società, Facoltà di Architettura Civile and Facoltà del Design of the Politecnico di Milano."

George Nelson (1908-1986) was one of the most intellectual architect of “good design” era and critic of American culture and industry. He had an important influence in the design and architecture culture with new dwellings, furniture, office design, exhibition design  projects. He was also a writer, art critic and journalist.
George Nelson (1908-1986) è stato il più intellettuale dei progettisti della stagione del good design del secondo dopoguerra ma anche coscienza critica della cultura e dell’industria statunitense. Ha avuto un’influenza determinante nel valorizzare alcune fra le principali personalità dell’epoca e nell’organizzare in modo innovativo la produzione industriale, ricalibrando la struttura interna dei sistemi di fabbricazione, packaging, pubblicità e vendita. Architetto e designer, ha messo a punto nuove tipologie dell’abitare, con residenze e attrezzature sperimentali; ha riformato quelle del furniture design e ha dato un contributo determinante all’office design. Altrettanto importante è la stata l’elaborazione e la promozione di una nuova cultura del progetto mediante un apporto critico e teorico che ha costellato, insieme all’intensa attività giornalistica, tutta la sua biografia. Gli allestimenti di padiglioni espositivi e di mostre internazionali hanno contribuito a manifestare un atteggiamento di grande apertura verso discipline diverse e a concretizzare una personale teoria della visione.

L'americano Charles Eames (1907-1978) è uno dei principali protagonisti del design per la poliedrica attività progettuale e comunicativa (dal disegno dei mobili a quello dei giocattoli, dall'allestimento di mostre all'attività di film-maker, dalla fotografia alla grafica pubblicitaria, dalle lezioni universitarie alle consulenze per il governo americano o indiano), per aver creato dei veri e propri archetipi del furniture design, per aver sempre perseguito una chiara impostazione del progetto. Insieme alla moglie Ray Kaiser (1912-1988) e ai numerosi collaboratori dell'Eames Office, egli ha composto un vero e proprio atlante del design, in cui creatività, senso del «gioco», libertà d'espressione e continua sperimentazione, su tecniche e materiali, non consentono una facile codificazione. Il presente contributo ne restituisce in sintesi la formazione intellettuale, le modalità della sua estetica, i rapporti con la cultura del tempo e i principali committenti, le opere principali.

(From the cover) Se oggi la maggiore occasione professionale per gli architetti, specie se giovani, è quella di «ristrutturare» case ed uffici, ossia progettare arredamenti, il libro della Forino ne propone una chiave di lettura del tutto originale nell'ambito della letteratura architettonica. Non si tratta beninteso di un manuale, perché l'autrice traccia un sottile excursus storico-critico di un fenomeno particolare dell'arredamento, che supera l'ormai tradizionale modo di fare degli architetti-arredatori. Questi si limitano per lo più a modellare pareti, scegliere materiali e colori, aggiungere alcuni mobili e altro, mentre gli interventi più ambiziosi mirano ad articolare lo spazio interno su più livelli, con un esito chiaramente scenografico nel migliore dei casi. Viceversa, quanto si espone in questo libro consiste nel privilegiare la spazialità propria dell'architettura, quella che si lega al binomio invaso-involucro, proponendola anche nella elaborazione di un ambiente interno. Ecco allora come uno spazio arredato perde ogni aspetto rappresentativo, ogni forma di scenografia, ogni sorta di decorazione e di trompe l'oeil, per tradursi in una composizione conformativa, in qualcosa cioè che «conforma» l'invaso spaziale, obiettivo che si raggiunge attraverso la categoria – che è anche un modo di formare – di un «interno nell'interno».
Il saggio, oltre ad interessare operativamente gli addetti ai lavori, risulta di notevole utilità anche per gli storici della disciplina. Lo schema suddetto non è infatti rapportato esclusivamente alle tipologie del domestico, ma anche ad altre relative agli ambienti del passato; il tutto seguendo una rigorosa cronologia, della quale notoriamente si sostanzia la storia.
The indoor’s inside – a big object where to live – is a phenomenology characterizing the Interior Design History through the centuries. Since the 14th century until now, we can recognize, within some domestic environments, the presence of a further delimitation, physically distinct.
Throuht the spaces tinning we can have a space inside another huger one, which is smaller, articulate in a different way, and sometimes movable from its original position. It is a kind of space which has analogies with the architecture, considered as an enclosure, "a box inside box" configuration.

The chapter focuses on the Western history of the bed as a privileged symbol that can shed light not only on sleep’s evolution but also, especially, on the shaping and reshaping of human identity. Century after century, the bed has embodied both intimacy and its opposite, starting with social power relations.
As an architect and a philosopher, in the first part of the chapter, we shall review the cornerstones of the Western history of the bed, starting with the Middle Ages and proceeding with the Renaissance, the Ancient Regime (when the symbolic meaning of the bed as power emerges strongly), the Victorian era, the works of Ch.R. Mackintosh, rationalist architects and E. Sottsass (whose telematic bed heralds what most characterises the contemporary meaning of sleep as monitoring and optimisation), and even Efner’s bed as a workstation.
In the second part of the chapter, we shall offer a philosophical reading of the cornerstones described above, with particular focus on the final steps. Specifically, we shall argue that monitoring and optimising sleep is a paradoxical way to monitor and optimise human identity itself. On the one hand, we want to sleep better to perform better, and on the other hand, we want to perform better by externalising our capabilities (starting with self-regulating sleep) from ourselves to artefacts (starting with the bed).

Se la cucina è a lungo considerata il “cuore” della casa – centro familiare quanto luogo femminile per eccellenza –, la storia del suo spazio è più articolata di tale preconcetto, riverberando i mutamenti della società e dei rapporti di genere in ogni epoca. È a partire dalla fine degli anni Venti che in Italia, sulla scia di esperienze europee e statunitensi, il progetto della cucina riveste un maggiore interesse per gli architetti, la stampa, il pubblico. In prima istanza è supportato dall’ideologia familista del fascismo, che allaccia l’ambiente al ruolo della donna in seno alla società, per diventare, dal dopoguerra in avanti, un ambito sempre più specializzato e considerato dall’industria e dai designer, che accompagna i cambiamenti sociali del Paese: prima che spazio architettonico, la cucina è infatti un topos sociale e culturale.
A lungo frenate nella carriera professionale, le architette italiane iniziano a occuparsene perché relegate nella mansione di “arredatrici” o, altrimenti, operanti soprattutto nell’alveo del progetto domestico, considerato più consono a loro. Da questo stereotipo di genere – la donna può essere un’esperta progettista della casa perché incarna, in prima persona, il ruolo della casalinga –, la presenza femminile si fa strada nelle abitazioni degli italiani, non solo come utente o interlocutrice, ma come voce attiva. Avvertite delle contemporanee sperimentazioni internazionali, le cucine delle architette italiane evolvono con gradualità da un impianto tradizionale fino a proposte innovative. Elena Campi (?-?), Sofia Mazzoleni Badoni (1911-2002), Anna Castelli (1918-2006) (prima con Eugenio Gentili Tedeschi, poi da sola), Luisa Castiglioni (1923-2015) e Margherita Mori Bravi (1921-2006), Luisa Aiani (1920-1990) (con Ico Parisi), Cini Boeri (1924-2020), Carla Venosta (1924-2019), Antonia Astori (1940) e altre partecipano con i propri progetti – realizzati o allestiti – alle strategie del cambiamento sociale nell’ambiente domestico.

The Compasso d’Oro, established in 1954, is an iconic award that chronicles the history of Italy within the context of industrial design. This award not only celebrates creativity but also reflects the social, cultural, and economic changes of the country. From its early editions, the Compasso d’Oro has embodied the hopes of a society that sought redemption and innovation in the post-war period. During the economic boom, marked by industrialization and the influence of American culture, the awarded objects became symbols of a new lifestyle, infused with optimism and progressivism.
The award accompanies the transformation of the Italian family, from a rural and patriarchal model to a more urban and industrial one, also reflecting the changing nature of domestic spaces. In the 1950s and 1960s, the home became a place of greater socialization and design experimentation, with the introduction of functional and innovative furniture. The kitchen, for example, was transformed through modularity and ergonomics, marking the beginning of modernity in Italian homes. The adoption of new materials and a focus on lighting highlighted the search for practical and aesthetic solutions for a public aspiring to a more tangible sense of well-being.
Within the context of the economic boom, a culture of consumption developed that intertwined with design, giving rise to objects that became true status symbols. Between the 1960s and 1970s, Italy experienced growing attention towards "good design," with the involvement of renowned artists and architects, reflected in national and international awards. Awarded objects like dishwashers, refrigerators, and cars expressed the dream of a more comfortable and technologically advanced society.
Over time, the Compasso d’Oro adapted to social changes. In the 1970s, Italy faced an economic crisis and political turmoil, marked by terrorism and an energy crisis. This sociopolitical backdrop also influenced design: the home became a more eclectic space, reflecting a sense of disillusionment and a continued search for balance between functionality and beauty. The awarded objects from this period reflected an adaptation to new needs, with more minimalist and versatile solutions.
Thus, the award became a sort of barometer of Italian sociocultural changes, reflecting a constantly evolving country's desires, fears, and achievements. From the dream of individual well-being to the need to adapt to global changes, the Compasso d’Oro documents the dialogue between tradition and innovation through the awarded objects. Industrial design, as a testimony to a culture in evolution, thus becomes a driver of progress, a symbol of hope and optimism that pushes society to design and live differently, looking toward the future.
Furthermore, the Compasso d’Oro’s commitment to emphasising the importance of functionality and aesthetics in domestic furnishings marks the beginning of a new era, where the home becomes, more than ever, a dynamic and flexible place capable of responding to the needs of a changing society. The awarded objects are no longer merely functional tools but have become expressions of a new culture of living. The home, once static and tied to more rigid family traditions, transforms into a living environment that is both fluid and symbolic, where design becomes the central element in narrating the transformation of the social fabric.
The Compasso d’Oro continues to serve as a privileged observatory, an opportunity to read Italian society through its objects, which speak of a past in evolution and a future that is yet to be designed.
