Synopsis
Guilin is world-famous for its spectacular karst landscape. The Li River's limestone peaks and pastoral scenery form a living ink-wash painting. A UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site since 2014.
Overview
Guilin, located in northeastern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, is world-renowned for its spectacular karst (rock dissolution) landscape. Guilin's karst scenery is regarded as the model example of "South China Karst" — a classic representative of continental tower karst. The bizarre peaks, clear waters, and beautiful countryside along the Li River form a natural ink-wash painting, earning the ancient saying "Guilin's scenery is the best under heaven" (桂林山水甲天下).
In 2014, Phase II of "South China Karst" was inscribed on the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List, with Guilin Karst as an important component. Additionally, Guilin Karst was selected for the second batch of 100 Geological Heritage Sites by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS).
Geological Formation
The formation of Guilin's karst landscape can be traced back approximately 300 million years to the Paleozoic Era. At that time, this region was a vast ocean where massive amounts of limestone were deposited. Through tectonic movements, water erosion, and chemical dissolution, the limestone was gradually sculpted into the magnificent peaks, peak clusters, caves, and underground rivers we see today.
The karst area in Guilin is vast — within the Li River basin alone, the karst area covers 2,665 square kilometers, including 1,285 sq km of peak clusters and 1,167 sq km of peak forests, with 11,400 individual stone peaks.

The Li River Experience
The Li River is the soul of Guilin's landscape. The 83-kilometer waterway from Guilin to Yangshuo is hailed as one of the most beautiful rivers in the world. Key scenic spots along the way include:
- Nine Horse Fresco Hill: Natural patterns on the riverbank cliff — legend says those who can spot nine horses have the talent of a top scholar
- Yellow Cloth Reflection: The scene featured on the back of the 20 RMB banknote; mountain reflections on the water like yellow cloth spread across the river
- Xingping Ancient Town: A well-preserved Ming-Qing dynasty town, one of the best viewpoints for Li River scenery
- Xianggong Mountain: The best vantage point overlooking the first bend of the Li River
A Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo takes approximately 4-5 hours and is the most classic way to experience Guilin's landscape.
Longji Rice Terraces
The Longji (Dragon's Backbone) Rice Terraces are located in Longsheng Various Nationalities Autonomous County, Guilin. Construction began during the Yuan Dynasty and was completed in the Qing Dynasty, spanning over 650 years of history. The terraces range from 300 to 1,100 meters above sea level, with slopes reaching up to 50 degrees. This agricultural wonder was created by generations of Zhuang and Yao people through hard work and wisdom.
The Longji Terraces are divided into three main scenic areas: Jinkeng (Dazhai), Ping'an Village, and Huanglu Yao Village. In spring when the terraces are flooded, they look like层层 silver chains winding up the mountain; in autumn when the rice ripens, they resemble a golden stairway from the mountaintop to the valley floor.
