OSM Tag History
boundary
=*
specifies the nature of a
boundary relation
, which describes the extent of an administrative, nature conservation, or otherwise demarcated area. Occasionally the tag is used on linear ways to indicate borders with a name distinct from either area that it separates.
Avoid using the tag on closed ways, or repeating it on boundary relation members, as this can lead to ambiguities and cause unexpected behavior in data consumers.
