Overview

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (卧虎藏龙) is a 2000 wuxia film directed by Ang Lee, based on the 1941-42 novel by Wang Dulu. Starring Chow Yun-fat, Michelle Yeoh, and Zhang Ziyi, with action choreography by Yuen Woo-ping, the film holds a Douban rating of 8.4 and an IMDb score of 7.9. At the 73rd Academy Awards, it won four Oscars: Best Foreign Language Film, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, and Best Original Score — the most Academy Awards ever won by a Chinese-language film.

Premiering at the 53rd Cannes Film Festival on May 19, 2000, and released in China that October, the film earned $213.5 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing foreign-language film in history at the time. It not only introduced Chinese wuxia culture to the global stage but profoundly influenced international action cinema for the next two decades.

Plot Summary

Master swordsman Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun-fat) wishes to retire from the martial arts world. He entrusts his legendary sword, the Green Destiny, to his longtime friend and fellow warrior Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh), asking her to deliver it to their patron, Sir Te (Sihung Lung), for safekeeping. But that very night, the sword is stolen by Jen Yu (Zhang Ziyi), the daughter of a powerful governor who secretly possesses extraordinary martial arts talent.

As Li Mu Bai and Yu Shu Lien pursue the thief, Li Mu Bai recognizes Jen Yu's exceptional gift and wants to take her as his student. But Jen Yu is fiercely independent, torn between her privileged upbringing and her longing for freedom. She also carries a secret romance with Lo (Chang Chen), a desert bandit she met during an earlier adventure.

The film's most celebrated sequence is a breathtaking chase through a bamboo forest — Jen Yu gliding weightlessly across the treetops, Li Mu Bai pursuing close behind, the two figures soaring and diving through emerald stalks. This scene became one of the most iconic action sequences in cinema history and defined Western audiences' visual understanding of Chinese martial arts.

Cultural Impact

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon transformed the global perception of Chinese cinema. It was the first Chinese-language film to truly penetrate Western mainstream markets, showing audiences worldwide that wuxia was not merely about combat — it was an art form blending philosophy, aesthetics, and the poetry of human desire.

The film's success catalyzed a wave of wuxia and martial arts epics, including Hero, House of Flying Daggers, and Curse of the Golden Flower. Its influence extended to Hollywood itself — the Matrix sequels' action choreography was directly shaped by Yuen Woo-ping's work on this film.

Zhang Ziyi's breakout performance launched her into international stardom, leading to roles in Memoirs of a Geisha and other Western productions. Tan Dun's score, featuring Yo-Yo Ma's cello solos, seamlessly merged Chinese folk instruments with Western orchestral traditions, becoming a landmark in film music history.
