2026 Distinguished Alumni Awards
Hundreds of LSU Law alumni and friends gathered in Tiger Stadium on Thursday evening, April 9, to celebrate the 2026 Distinguished Alumni Awards honorees. A reception kicked off the celebration, followed by a welcome by Interim Dean Caprice Roberts before the awards program, for which Ed Walters (’75) served as emcee. Each of the honorees was introduced by an LSU Law alumni and presented with a crystal award. This year's honorees are: Outstanding Young Alumnus: J. Benjamin Aguiñaga (’15); Honorary Alumnus: Professor Bill Corbett; Engaged Alumnus: Vance Gibbs (’82); Outstanding Public Service: Richard Ieyoub (’72); Legal Innovator: Mike Pinkerton (’97); Career Champion: Kean Miller; and Service to the Profession: Hon. Jay Zainey (’75).

2025 LSU Law Veterans 5k
Over 130 community members, students, and LSU Law alumni showed up bright and early on Saturday, Nov. 8 for the inaugural LSU Law Veterans 5k at the LSU Golf Course to celebrate Veterans Day. The 5k race also raised money for a scholarship to support veterans and their families at LSU Law, raising more than the initial $10,000 goal. After the race, event sponsors were on hand to supply food and water and provide information about the U.S. Armed Forces.

LSU Law hosted its annual All-Alumni Tailgate and Hats 'n Canes Toast to the 3L class on Saturday, Oct. 25, prior to the Tigers' game against Texas A&M. Despite a rainy start to the day, the tailgate was well attended and the skies cleared for Hats 'n Canes Toast, during which Mike the Tiger made a surprise appearance and posed with next spring's graduating class.

2025 Liskow Visiting Professor in Energy Law Lecture and John P. Laborde Energy Law Center dedication
University of Oklahoma College of Law Professor Joseph A. Schremmer presented “Subterranean Siblings: Rivalry and Harmony Between Carbon Sequestration and Hydrocarbon Extraction” at LSU Law on Thursday, Oct. 23, for the 2025 Liskow Visiting Professor in Energy Law Lecture.
Schremmer’s lecture took place from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Robinson Courtroom at the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center. A special ribbon cutting for the John P. Laborde Energy Law Center was held in the courtroom following the lecture, and attendees were then welcomed to a reception in the new Energy Law Center.
LSU Law Professor Keith Hall, who also serves as director of the John P. Laborde Energy Law Center, welcomed attendees and introduced Professor Schremmer. LSU Law Interim Dean Caprice Roberts welcomed special guests, which included former LSU Law Chancellor John Costonis, former LSU Law Interim Dean Lee Ann Wheelis Lockridge, LSU Law Energy Law Advisors Chair John T. Nesser (’73) and Energy Law Advisors Member Cliffe Laborde (’76), who is also one of the sons of the late John P. Laborde, and former LSU Law External Relations Director Karen Soniat. Nesser, Laborde, Roberts, and Soniat all participated in the ribbon cutting.

The LSU Law Cajun Law Association (CLAW) hosted its inaugural Acadiana Day celebration at the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center on Monday, Oct. 13. Officers and members of the student organization, which was founded earlier this year, played Cajun music on the Law Center Plaza and welcomed all students, faculty, and staff to enjoy some boudin and cracklins.

2025 Welcome to the Profession Dinner
As part of orientation for the LSU Law Class of 2028, the Law Center hosted a Welcome to the Profession Dinner with the support of Breazeale, Sachse & Wilson, L.L.P. on Thursday, Aug. 14. LSU Law Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs Andrea Beauchamp Carroll (’00) moderated a panel of BSW attorneys, Dani Borel (’14), Alexa Candelora (’20), Joe Cefalu (’12), David Fleshman (’11), and Melissa Shirley (’97), who answered questions about the law school experience. Later, LSU Law alumnus and Louisiana First Circuit Court of Appeal Judge Chris Hester ('08) administered the students an oath of professionalism.

2025 Commencement
LSU Law held commencement exercises for the Class of 2025 at 8 a.m. on Friday, May 16, at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on the LSU campus.
Louisiana Supreme Court Justice Piper D. Griffin ('87) delivered the commencement address. The Star-Spangled Banner was sung by Class of 2025 graduate Hannah Johnson Cathey, and Student Bar Association Executive President Justin Benton Alford Jr. delivered the student welcome.
Dean Alena M. Allen presented faculty and staff awards, and introduced Justice Griffin.
Associate Dean for Student and Academic Affairs Andrea Beauchamp Carroll provided the reading of the roll, while Professor Tom Galligan and Assistant Dean of Student Affairs Jake Henry III hooded the graduates.
LSU Board of Supervisors Member Rémy Voisin Starns delivered remarks and introduced U.S. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson ('98), who also provided brief remarks. The class farewell was delivered by Class President Julia Grace Montgomery.

2024 LLM Orientation
On August 5, the LSU Law Center welcomed 17 international students to the L.L.M. program, one of the largest cohorts in the school’s history. During their two-week long orientation, students completed courses such as Introduction to American Law Schools and the U.S. Legal Culture taught by LSU Law Professors Jeff Brooks, John Devlin, Marlene Krousel, and Olivier Moreteau. Nancy Morris, a 2019 graduate of the LSU Law L.L.M. program, also spoke with students via Zoom about the New York Bar Exam. In between their courses, students became acclimated to Louisiana through field trips to Downtown Baton Rouge and to the Louisiana Supreme Court in New Orleans. Chief Justice John Weimer (’80) welcomed the students and Professors Nick Davrados and Moreteau on their tour of the building.

Les Avocats, which translates in French to “the lawyers,” honors LSU Law graduates of 50 or more years and is an opportunity for alumni to reconnect with their former classmates. LSU Law welcomes delegation of Bangladeshi attorneys general for appellate advocacy training
LSU Law welcomed a delegation of senior lawyers from the Office of the Attorney General of Bangladesh for a week-long training workshop on appellate advocacy. The visit was in partnership with the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Overseas Prosecutorial, Development, Assistance, and Training (OPDAT) and the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka, Bangladesh. During their visit, the delegation met with Louisiana judges, appellate attorneys, and LSU Law faculty members and alumni from Baton Rouge and New Orleans. LSU Law faculty members Aimee Pittman, Professor Heidi Thompson, Professor Marlene Kroussel, Professor Tracy Norton, and Professor John Devlin led the training sessions. Professor Jeff Brooks helped bring the delegation to LSU Law and escorted them throughout their visit. LSU Law alumnus and Resident Legal Advisor with the U.S. DOJ, OPDAT/CT Garth Backe ('02) also accompanied the delegation on their visit.

Parkway High School visit to LSU Law
LSU Law welcomed about 20 students from Bossier City’s Parkway High School on Tuesday, April 18, for a tour of the Paul M. Hebert Law Center. Second-year law students Danielle Monsour and William “Grey” Fitzgerald spent nearly an hour showing the students the Law Center and telling them about student life at LSU Law. The students also spent some time with Trial Advocacy Fellow Charles Watkins, who guided them through a cross-examination exercise. The Parkway students visited LSU Law as part of a multi-day trip to Baton Rouge, during which they also visited the State Capitol and attended an LSU baseball game.

U.S. Air Force Court of Criminal Appeals holds oral arguments at LSU Law
The U.S. Air Force Court of Criminal Appeals held oral arguments at the Paul M. Hebert Law Center on Wednesday, March 22. Six LSU Law students were selected to submit amicus briefs in advance of the hearing, and two of them—3Ls Chad Thornton and Hannah Turner—argued their briefs before the court.
Following the hearing, Senior Appellate Military Judge Col. Natalie D. Richardson, Appellate Military Judge Col. William J. Annexstad, and Appellate Military Judge Col. Eric J. Cadotte, as well as the held a question and answer session with those in attendance. A special reception was also held in the Student Lounge for the judges and attendees.

2020 Distinguished Alumni Celebration
Roughly 300 people attended the 2020 Distinguished Alumni Celebration on Friday evening, March 6, to honor eight LSU Law alumni at the Marriott Hotel in Baton Rouge.
“Our 10,000 LSU Law alums have made their mark on our state and in places throughout the globe,” said LSU Law Interim Dean Lee Ann Lockridge in her opening remarks, “and tonight we gather to honor eight of our graduates who have distinguished themselves in the practice of law, in our communities and within the walls of LSU Law.”
Longtime LSU Law Professor William Crawford, Hon. Ernestine Gray, Hon. Guy Holdridge, and attorneys H. Alston Johnson III and James P. Roy were honored as Distinguished Alumni of the Year. Distinguished Achievement honorees were attorneys Glenn Armentor, John M. Madison Jr. and Mary Olive Pierson.
Among those in attendance were LSU Interim President Tom Galligan; Hon. Kitty Kimball, retired chief justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court; Hon. John deGravelles of the U.S. District Court for Middle District of Louisiana; LSU Board of Supervisors Chair Mary Leach Werner; Louisiana Commissioner of Administration Jay Dardenne; and LSU Law Chancellor Emeritus John Costonis. Many LSU Law alumni, professors and retired professors were also on hand.

2019 Reunion Weekend
The 2019 Reunion Weekend was a huge success, bringing hundreds of LSU Law alumni and students together for a weekend of celebrations on Oct. 25-26.
Reunion Weekend events kicked off on Friday, Oct. 25, with a pair of CLE classes on ethics and professionalism, presented by alumni James A. Brown and Skip Philips, respectively. Later that evening, graduates from the classes of 1979, 1984, 1989, 1994, 1999 and 2009 celebrated their reunions at the Capitol Park Museum in downtown Baton Rouge.
The fun continued on Saturday, with the All-Alumni Tailgate and Hats 'n Canes toast, which preceded a thrilling 23-20 win by the LSU Tigers over Auburn.
LSU Law would like to thank all those who participated in this year's Reunion Weekend events, as well as Brown and Phillips for teaching the CLE classes, and NeunerPate and CSRS for sponsoring the All-Alumni Tailgate.

2019 Orientation
LSU Law Dean Thomas Galligan, Jr. welcomed the LSU Law “Class of 2022” at the first day of a two-day orientation program on the LSU Law campus. Dean Galligan was joined by Dr. Stacia L. Haynie, LSU Executive Vice President and Provost; Andrea Carroll, LSU Law Associate Dean for Academic & Student Affairs; Jake Henry, Director of Admissions for the Law Center; and, numerous LSU Law faculty members and students.
Some 205 students make up the first year (1 L) class. Louisiana residents comprise 70 percent of the class, while 30 percent are nonresidents. The class is 53 percent female and 47 percent male; 21 percent are students of color. Students hail from 67 undergraduate institutions, 24 states and one foreign country. Fifteen of the entering students are enrolled in the LSU Law/LSU 3 + 3 program.

Congratulations to the LSU Law Class of 2019, who celebrated with the annual Hats ‘n Canes toast on Oct. 20. The graduating class gathered on the front steps of the Old Law Building sporting black hats and carrying canes. The annual Hats ‘n Canes tradition began in 1930 when seniors carried black canes with curved handles and silver bands engraved with the student’s name, year of graduation, and the words, “The LSU Law School.”

2018 Scholarship Reception
LSU Law welcomed more than 130 scholarship donors and student scholarship recipients to the Club at LSU Union Square for the annual Scholarship Reception on March 27, 2018. The annual event honors those who helped fund scholarships at the Law Center, and the students who have benefited from that generosity. The reception also provides the Law Center an opportunity to say "thank you" to our donors, and, of course, to acknowledge our wonderful students. Thank you to all who attended this event, and for your support of the LSU Law Center Scholarship Programs.

2018 The Order of the Barristers
Nine members of the LSU Law Class of 2018 were inducted into The Order of the Barristers on May 30. The Order of Barristers is a national honorary organization whose purpose is the encouragement of oral advocacy and brief writing skills through effective law school oral advocacy programs. Students who have excelled in moot court, mock trial, brief writing, oral advocacy, and other advocacy programs throughout their time at the LSU Law Center are selected to join the Order.

2018 Dean's Cup Finals
Ahmed Soussi won the 2018 Dean’s Cup Moot Court Competition on April 9 with. Jacob Irving finishing runner-up. The Dean’s Cup Moot Court Competition refines students’ oral advocacy skills by arguing a series of real cases currently pending before the U.S. Supreme Court. In the final round, Soussi and Irving argued Minnesota Voters Alliance v. Mansky, which involves laws that forbid voters from wearing political badges, buttons, or other insignia at the polling place.

Spring 2018 Flory Trial Finals
LSU Law students Erin Abrams and Justin DiCharia won the Spring 2018 Ira S. Flory Mock Trial Competition on March 6. Chaz Coleman and Leah Voth finished runners-up in the internal trial competition. The case was heard and judged by a distinguished panel of experienced civil litigators: Harry J. “Skip” Philips, Jr. – Managing Partner, Taylor, Porter, Brooks & Phillips L.L.P. and 2018 LSU Law Center Distinguished Achievement honoree; Lykisha Vaughan – Managing Attorney, Southeast Louisiana Legal Services; and Jude Bourque – Assistant Attorney General, Louisiana Attorney General’s Office Litigation Division and National Institute of Trial Advocacy (NITA) Instructor.

Fall 2017 Ira S. Flory Trial Competition
LSU Law students Tyler Robbins and Chaz Coleman won the Fall 2017 Ira S. Flory Mock Trial Competition on Oct. 5 at LSU Law. Robbins and Coleman successfully defended their client in the case judged by United States Magistrate Judge Daniel E. Knowles, III, US District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana; Lindsay Blouin, Deputy Chief Defender, East Baton Rouge Office of the Public Defender; and Colin Clark, Deputy Solicitor General and Chief of Criminal Appeals, Louisiana Attorney General's Office.

LSU Law students Kyle Townsley and J. William VanDehei won the Fall 2017 Robert Lee Tullis Moot Court Competition on Nov. 1 at LSU Law.
Townsley and VanDehi successfully argued their case in the final round judged by Senior Judge James Brady, United States District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana; Elizabeth Murrill, Solicitor General for the Louisiana Department of Justice; and Corey Amundson, acting United States Attorney for the Middle District of Louisiana.

2016 PILS Fall Day of Service
About 75 LSU Law students traveled to six areas around Baton Rouge to lend a hand during the Public Interest Law Society’s annual Fall Day of Service on Saturday. Starting at 7:30 a.m., students, faculty and staff donated their time with Habitat for Humanity, St. Vincent DePaul, BREC’s Farr Park, and Cat Haven. Students and staff working with Habitat for Humanity tore down drywall, removed flooring and sprayed mold prevention in a house destroyed by recent flooding in the Baton Rouge area.

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas Visits LSU Law Center
The LSU Law Center welcomed U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and Michelle Shamblin Stratton, the Law Center's first-ever U.S. Supreme Court Clerk, to the campus on September 6 and 7 for two busy days of educational events.
The agenda for the Justice and Ms. Shamblin included student forums, classroom teaching, and meetings with students, leaders of student organizations, and the faculty.
