Hi, my name is Loretta and I wanted to share my experience studying the
BSc Health and Social Care
degree at Cardiff Met.
My journey began in 2020 right before the pandemic, when I joined an accredited course in my community to keep my brain busy while I was at home with my children. But when the lockdown hit, we were given a choice to either stop the course or continue with the
Foundation in Social Sciences
at Cardiff Met. I chose the latter as I was determined to come away with a new set of skills.
Fast forward four years, two and a half years of online studies, volunteering and gaining experience from a job, I am now in my final year. My inspiration to study health and social care came from my own life experiences and those around me. I found that no matter how much I helped, I was still lacking in understanding. I wanted to have a deeper knowledge and understanding of the many issues faced by society.
With my degree, I hope to gain employment and make a positive impact in my community, particularly within the area of family support and women’s health. I am fortunate to be currently volunteering with an organization that supports families, and I am also employed with an organization that focuses on women’s health. I realise that I would not have been able to attain these opportunities without the knowledge and skills I gained from the course.
Coming to Cardiff Met has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. The timing of the course, the location, and how it all fitted into my life just made so much sense. I have made amazing friends here. It was challenging, but with the support of my lecturers and my amazing friends, I never felt like I could not do it.
You know, I have this irrational fear of presenting, but with each passing year, I have had to present increasingly in some of my modules. It has been quite a journey, from presenting an online PowerPoint on the Foundation, taking part in role plays, making a voice-over documentary, and presenting my dissertation poster at the health and social care posters exhibition in my final year. This last one was particularly scary for me because I had to meet experts on the topic, but with the support of my lecturers, friends, and the encouragement of the experts, I managed to present my poster (without waffling!). This experience reassured me that even if something seems hard at first, you should at least prepare and try your best.
I have overcome my fear and developed confidence in my presenting skills.
Overall, I feel extremely grateful that I seized the opportunity presented to me. I am truly thankful that I did not leave the pandemic the same way I entered it. I understand that not everyone can say they gained something from that season of life, but I can confidently say that I gained a lot from studying the Health & Social Care degree, which will continue to bear fruit for the rest of my life.
