Mechanical Engineering Design & Development Laboratory (MEDDL)
About
The Mechanical Engineering Design and Development Lab (MEDDL) is committed to cultivating creativity in University of California, Riverside (UCR) students, staff, and faculty through interdisciplinary innovation initiatives and outreach. Innovation, as we understand it, is a spectrum such that innovation begins where science meets technology, technology meets design, and design meets engineering; that innovation knows no boundaries, and imagination is without limitations. MEDDL firmly believes that research should be transparent, and that knowledge should be communal which is why this laboratory promises to serve as a universal and inclusive hub for UCR creatives from any background.
MEDDL Principles
Inspiration for innovation is everywhere.
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO KNOW IT ALL, YOU JUST HAVE TO KNOW SOMEONE THAT DOES.
Be teachable.
VULNERABILITY IS A STRENGTH.
Become comfortable with failure.
THE MORE YOU FAIL, THE MORE YOU LEARN.
Create thoughtfully and with purpose.
BIG IDEAS HAVE BIGGER IMPACTS.

Safety first! Get trained on equipment
To access the MEDDL makerspace, students can initiate the process by emailing
meddl@engr.ucr.edu
to request enrollment in the dedicated Canvas course. Once added to the course, they will have the opportunity to submit essential safety documentation and commence written training for each machine. Following the completion of these initial steps, students can proceed to the makerspace for hands-on training under supervision.
It's crucial to note that access to the makerspace is restricted to the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays, ensuring a controlled and safe environment for student engagement. This structured approach enables students to progressively acquire the necessary skills and knowledge before gaining independent access to work with machines within the makerspace
