Student Reviews of Online Systems Engineering Programs
Jonathan Endrikat, Graduated 2016
Attended: Stevens Institute of Technology
The program was very helpful in industry and helped me learn while comparing what we do at my company. Overall the program did help me see the flaws with my company and gave the me processes for fixing those issues. It has also made me confident in myself to start my own busines in the near future. I would say the knowledge I attainted in my graduate degree was far more helpful than my undergraduate degree. The finances were rough though over $30,000 just for graduate school out of pocket on top
...
of $80,000 I already owe to the same school for undergraduate degree.

The curriculum is very challenging. Many, many long nights working through homeworks. At the end, however, the content enables me to find useful applications in the real-world. I am an engineer and have rapidly gained efficiency and deeper insight in my career as a direct result of this curriculum. The projects are often deep and relevant. There are many connections to the outside world enabling our work to be noticed by people capable of providing great opportunities. One thing about online classes
...
is that we're integrated with real classes and held to the same expectations. We work occasionally with on-campus students, and I would recommend making a very strong first impression, otherwise the teamwork is difficult. I've always had good interactions with on-campus students, and I have only heard of bad interactions. So just attend to a solid relationship from the start, offer to them what you can do at a distance. Also, the on-campus students are looking for work, and so in your introductions, tell them where you work. That is incentive to work with you. Overall, this program has been a fantastic experience. The professors all have a good deal of experience and can easily relate the classroom to the real world. If you enjoy rigorous curriculum, challenging projects, and a head full of useful knowledge with a strong sense of how to practice the knowledge, this is an ideal program for you.

I am an online student and have never set foot on campus. So I am not able to comment on a number of the categories. Overall, I think their online classes are great. The teacher respond well to emails an questions. My only issue is that I have not been able to find any part-time graduate scholarships. But this is rather common in grad school.

There are two key components when deciding what masters degrees to pursue, your major and the school. I performed countless hours researching an engineering major that not only would advance my current technical skills but would also expand my knowledge in the industry. This ultimately led me to systems engineering. In case you are unfamiliar what Systems Engineering is, the University of Dayton Research Institute defines it as the interdisciplinary field of engineering and engineering management
...
that focuses on how to design and manage complex systems over their life cycles. A degree in System Engineering gave me more real-world career knowledge than any other technical engineering degree in existence. It is for this reason I chose to pursue a Masters Degree in Systems Engineering. I had finally decided on the program I wanted, all that was left was locating the perfect institution that fit my needs and would help advance my career early on. I knew a part-time online based program was required because I had already accepted a full-time job in Houston, Texas, but did not want to sacrifice the quality of my education. At this time was already enrolled as an undergraduate at Stevens Institute of Technology and really enjoyed my undergraduate program and the knowledge gained through the dedicated faculty in my department. Since Stevens Institute of Technology had a graduate degree in Systems Engineering and the fact I also had additional classes that I could take free of charge, I figured it would be smart to get a jump start on the Systems Engineering curriculum even if I chose to transfer to another university. This way I was able to take some of the courses directly on campus so I could interact with professors and other students in a classroom setting. After completing my first on-campus graduate class, I knew Stevens Institute of Technology was where I also wanted to complete my masters degree. Stevens made it extremely easy to transitions from an undergraduate to a part-time graduate online student. Given that the summer semester was split into two sessions, I was able to complete three courses the first half of the summer in addition to the two others I had already taken as an undergraduate. This meant I had was able to complete half of my ten-course curriculum before even starting my full-time position which began in July. From there it was easy sailing, completing one course every semester online. Overall, I loved the flexibility of the program. The fact that Stevens had the option of taking any Systems Engineering classes either online or on campus, truly made them stand out from other top-ranked universities. I was able to receive the in-classroom experience one desires, while still being able to take courses online when needed. To this day, I am constantly thinking about finding solutions to issues my company is facing as well as improving upon their current processes, which has been taken note of by upper management. And for this, I have Stevens Institute of Technologys Systems Engineering curriculum and faculty to thank.

I'd highly recommend this program. The program was tailored towards what my employer's business needs were, and it was helpful to get a higher level of education that aligned so perfectly with my job. The quality of the professors was very high. I enjoyed the lectures, hands on examples, and the direct application of the content to solving my employer's pressing challenges.

The professors and faculty that I have encountered so far have been very helpful and supportive. So far, the workload is as I expected from a Master's degree program. I am looking forward to continuing my graduate level experience with WPI. From what I have experienced at this point in my degree, their reputation for delivering a quality education is preceding them.

I applied to UVA on a lark, because previously, I'd only planned on applying to four programmes in Ind/Sys E (Michigan, Georgia Tech, Wisconsin, and Purdue), and felt as though I should do another. UVA was the first to let me in (so did Michigan and Wisconsin), and they offered full support (which is rare for a Masters). That's why I chose to attend UVA. I am, however, quite happy with my choice. The faculty I've found is generally top rate, and I certainly feel I've gained both a quality education,

as well as a solid alumni network. The biggest downsides of UVA (and Charlottesville) are these: 1) It's a smaller city, so anything around the University tends to shutter during breaks. 2) Public transit is pretty good, and better than I expected for a city of less than 50k, however, in order to do anything in the local area, you pretty much need a car. 3) C-ville is great if you're an undergrad, or if you're already with a family, but as a single, young professional, it's definitely limited. 4 (and this is department specific)) Because Systems at UVA is a reasonably small department, the course offerings are less than you will find at a place such as Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia Tech, etc.
