Since the development of open and low-cost generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), the higher education community has witnessed high use of AI-generated texts in scholarly research and academic assignments, attracting ongoing debate about whether such practices constitute cheating. While scholars argue that integrating GenAI tools can enhance productivity, critics raise concerns about the negative effect of such integration on critical thinking (CrT). This study therefore proposed a framework for enhancing students’ CrT skills in synthesizing AI-generated information. The proposed framework is underpinned by various theoretical foundations, encompassing five interconnected step-wise phases (familiarizing, conceptualizing, inquiring, evaluating, and synthesizing). The study was conducted under two separate experiments. The first experiment (Study 1) validated the effectiveness of the proposed framework, providing CrT training to 179 postgraduate students. In the second study (n = 125), additional experiments were undertaken to confirm the effectiveness of the framework in different contexts. An experimental procedure involving pretest and posttest design was implemented wherein participants were randomly allocated to one of three groups: experimental group 1 (exposed to our framework), experimental group 2 (exposed to an alternative self-regulated learning framework), and a control group (exposed to a non-structured framework). Results from Study 1 revealed that the framework enhances students’ CrT skills to synthesize AI-generated texts. However, these CrT skills manifested through various rigorous training aimed at reinforcing learning. While the proposed framework holds considerable value in cultivating CrT skills, significant differences arise across various personality traits. In Study 2, the framework proved to be effective in different contexts. However, it did not make a difference, particularly in its capacity to enhance students’ self-regulated learning compared to other frameworks. We discussed the implications of the findings and recommended it to educators seeking to prepare students for the challenges of the AI-driven knowledge economy.
Generative AI and the future of higher education: a threat to academic integrity or reformation? Evidence from multicultural perspectives

In recent years, higher education (HE) globally has witnessed extensive adoption of technology, particularly in teaching and research. The emergence of generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) further accelerates this trend. However, the increasing sophistication of GenAI tools has raised concerns about their potential to automate teaching and research processes. Despite widespread research on GenAI in various fields, there is a lack of multicultural perspectives on its impact and concerns in HE. This study addresses this gap by examining the usage, benefits, and concerns of GenAI in higher education from a multicultural standpoint. We employed an online survey that collected responses from 1217 participants across 76 countries, encompassing a broad range of gender categories, academic disciplines, geographical locations, and cultural orientations. Our findings revealed a high level of awareness and familiarity with GenAI tools among respondents. A significant portion had prior experience and expressed the intention to continue using these tools, primarily for information retrieval and text paraphrasing. The study emphasizes the importance of GenAI integration in higher education, highlighting both its potential benefits and concerns. Notably, there is a strong correlation between cultural dimensions and respondents' views on the benefits and concerns related to GenAI, including its potential as academic dishonesty and the need for ethical guidelines. We, therefore, argued that responsible use of GenAI tools can enhance learning processes, but addressing concerns may require robust policies that are responsive to cultural expectations. We discussed the findings and offered recommendations for researchers, educators, and policymakers, aiming to promote the ethical and effective integration of GenAI tools in higher education.

In the novel 'Pride and Prejudice', Austen (1813) wanted to show the marginal or subaltern standing of a woman in the 18th century England by saying that a woman was always subservient to a man, and the sole identity of a woman was being a wife to a male at that time. In present-day Bangladesh, a similar view is evident, where women are raised with the notion that their raison d'etre is to have and maintain stable relationships with men for a lifetime, despite the changing workplace dynamics that offer opportunities for progress. Bangladeshi women quietly embrace the philosophy of lifelong learning, yet their dedication to this pursuit remains largely unexplored and unrecorded, with only occasional publications touching upon the subject in an organized manner. The study examines how patriarchy restricts women's access to lifelong learning in Bangladesh, presenting a scoping review of literature to identify gaps and potential solutions. By advocating a radical approach, the paper aims to empower Bangladeshi professional women to overcome barriers and challenge patriarchal norms for their educational and career advancement.

The study has been conducted by employing feminist perspective on the textbooks. The analysis uses the qualitative approach of Kabira & Masinjila (1997) framework of gender analysis. This model looks at the textbooks by raising a series of questions that expose the gender responsiveness of a text. This paper uses only one aspect named "language use" of the model to analyse the gender related language of the textbooks. The results of the study show that in most of the textbook items language regarding gender issues is stereotypical and does not represent the present world realities. The study concludes that female gender has been demeaned and marginalized through the negative stereotyping of the language whereas male gender has been uplifted in the textbooks. Thus, the textbooks offer only the realities of the past which cannot be acceptable to females in the present world. Moreover, such type of biased use of language may impart negative impact on the minds of the students who study these textbooks on daily basis. Therefore, the study recommends that textbooks should be reviewed, and instead of gender biased and gender blind use of language in the textbooks, gendered balanced and gender aware language should be used in the English language textbooks.

Patriarchy has been commonly referred to as autocratic rule by the male mastery both in public and private spheres. It has become a social framework in which men hold essentials to control and prevail in parts of political administration, ethical specialists, social benefit, and control of property. In Bangladesh, men have historically dominated, oppressed, and exploited women. When women grow up, the tradition in which they are raised emphasizes the need for modesty and virginity, particularly for women. This is unassumingly visible not only in the countryside but also in urban spaces. This research examines the notion of patriarchy and its precise relationship to contemporary urban culture in the country. In addition, it investigates patriarchy as a concept from the perspective of feminists to address the fundamental feminist concerns about women's work and lives in the context of the urban spaces in Bangladesh.

Gothic can find its place in almost every literary genre and usually shows itself as the dominant genre in the work it enters. It is like a perfume bottle in which everything evil is filled. You open it up and it spreads out in a thick mist, it attracts, draws it to its centre.
It is also possible to write richly lived and livable stories, from psychological thrillers to serial killers, but the "Vokal Culture" of our society from the pre-television-radio era, the "scary narratives" sometimes embellished with exciting "bandit tales", the eyes that know how to search and write, from alkara to ghosts. It provides a very fertile material for pens that want it. If you are familiar with "gothic literature", you know that the basis of the subject is mostly stories based on vokal culture elements.
Vokal expressions, which are also met with the concepts of vokal culture, vokal tradition or traditional culture, are various forms of expression that are transmitted from generation to generation or within the same generation, with or without a literary quality, and which are determined as references on which behavior, attitudes, norms and beliefs are based on by the whole people and contain references in this context. contains.
In this study, the structural formation and regional differences of the horror-gothic folk tales in the context of vokal culture in Turkish Literature will be discussed.
Keywords: Gothic, Gothic and Horror, Horror Elements, Turkish Folk Story, Vokal Culture.

The purpose of this article is to give a high-level overview of interpretive research paradigms. It delves into the philosophical foundations of interpretivism research paradigm among all other research paradigms. This article begins with a summary of the components of the interpretivist research paradigm, with an emphasis on ontological and epistemological viewpoints from intrepretivists researchers. Next, it addresses the challenges interpretivist researchers face while conducting research under the Interpretivist paradigm and what characterizes the components in this paradigm are next discussed in detail. As researchers can explore subjective phenomena under this paradigm, this article takes a philosophical methodological stand to discuss how interpretivists researchers can distinguish themselves while conducting research by not adhering to several paradigms as they are mutually exclusive. The choice of a philosophical perspective to evaluate a subjective phenomenon should be guided by the demands and requirements of the research study, rather than focusing on the needs and requirements of a research investigation.

, we teach at least one EAP(English for Academic purposes) course to undergraduate students majoring in different streams and one of the EAP courses is English 102(Introduction to Composition) to beginners. English 102 is the first of three writing courses offered at NSU, required for all degrees. This course is designed for students needing skill development in writing basic English prose. The course reviews mechanics, grammar conventions, and composition skills, emphasizing varied sentence structures and coherence in the writing process. Emphasis is placed on paragraph development and writing correctly and clearly for a given purpose and audience (English 102 course outline). The students, who score below a certain percentage in English at their admission test, must take this course which aims to develop their basic writing and reading skills. After completing English 102, they are required to do English 103 (Intermediate Composition) and English 105 (Advanced Composition). When I joined NSU a few years back, I was given to teach two sections of 102 courses. I taught paragraph writing techniques and basic grammar components to help our students to improve their basic writing skills in English and basic reading skills for comprehension. In one section, I found most of the students were retaking the course and there was one who retook it three times and was doing it for the fourth time. I found this was alarming and was puzzled. As a novice teacher, I did not know what to do. I shared my concern with senior colleagues at the department, who told me how difficult it was to give pass marks to some students when their command over language was assessed after going through the content of their script. Like me, my colleagues also felt despair at times and I could see why. One of the key components of English 102 was paragraph writing and after few lessons and class works, I found that particular students had difficulty in constructing simple sentences

Social dynamics of a developing country undergo constant changes because of the demand of economic growth and people’s cater for social mobility. English has become important in all economic activities globally. Bangladesh was a British colony for almost 200 years. The legacy of English education still continues and it has not formulated any language policy, though the policy is to use mother tongue in all affairs of national/state functioning. Violating government rules, innumerable English education institutions operate taking advantage of the absence of government policy. This empirical study investigates unofficially how elements of social dynamics influence its language planning and policy.

The paper begins with a definition of -learner beliefs" -an unknown pedagogical term in Bangladeshi language teaching classrooms and then explains how the Eurocentric/Western concept of learner autonomy influences foreign trained teachers' teaching strategies. It then tries to justify that beliefs are at the core of any learning process. Reviewing expert opinions it tries to prove if teacher/student beliefs fail to converge frustration and dissatisfaction can result and the learners can show clear reluctance in learning a language. The paper also briefly discusses certain cross-cultural issues and visa-a-vi explores how foreign language learning can be challenging. Finally the writer explains how her own traditional beliefs about teacher's roles and responsibilities too have been metamorphosed after receiving higher education in a European university.

This paper is a follow up of a case study carried out in 2000 by Ms Tasneem Siraj Mahboob and Abdus Selim on the students taking Beginner & Intermediate Composition courses (English 102 & 103) at North South University, a leading English medium university of Bangladesh. The study was followed by writing a paper titled Practicing Journal Writing in Teaching Composition: A Case Study, co-authored by them and presented in the Sri Lanka English Language Teachers’ Association Conference in September 2000. One of the major issues addressed by the researchers was the existing debate regarding teachers’ feedback on journals: one school of thoughts believing all composition tasks required accuracy and the other holding fluency first and accuracy next. The study helped bring some major changes in the journal writing practice but no follow up has been done until now. The present researchers (2011) have designed a study with the intention to write a paper on their findings and also propose to e...

This paper explores the quality and effectiveness of English for Academic Purposes courses offered to the first year monolingual students at a private University in Bangladesh. Since the majority of students come from Bangla medium, these students are required to complete the EAP programme in their first year of university. The study reflects on the feedback of the EAP courses, which are delivered in the university, from the first year undergraduate students and the data collected from the students' questionnaire and teachers' interviews to be utilized to cater the specific needs required for students' success in academic and professional endeavors. A mixed method has been used to find the strengths and weaknesses of the existing EAP programme so that the areas of the current EAP programme can be discovered and developed. The literature of EAP and the data collected from mixed methods show that there is a great deal of importance to modify the current EAP programme considering students' perceptions and suggestions.

Article History This paper attempts to stress the premise that sexism, in its misogynistic form, is a deeply rooted legacy that persists very commonly amongst ordinary populace in societies across the geographical boundaries. It has therefore been implanted in the language systems and has taken root in mass psyche. By reflecting it in social practices, behavioral norms and institutional policies, it has denied half of the human race for centuries from their rightful places, hindered their development while depriving human civilization from contribution that could have come had their full potential been allowed to develop. It examines how sexism has intruded in language system and tended to discriminates women by rendering them invisible perpetuating the notions of male supremacy. Assiduous movement to identifying it and taking corrective measures requires mindful effort and it may be quite sometime before it could be effectively eradicated, if at all. It is also recognized that its presence in the communication organism does, even though faintly, influence thought processes, both of the users and the sufferers, and any effort to challenge sexism in the wider arena of social life should be incomplete without addressing it in the language system. Contribution/ Originality: This study contributes in the existing literature of the English and Bengali language and originates a formula to see how far they have come to integrate words to address both sexes and become gender friendly. This study is one of very few studies which has investigated sexism in Bangla Language.
