Synopsis

With a history of over 1,200 years, the ancient city of Diannan in Yunnan is known as the "Land of Literature and Culture." Renowned for cultural heritage such as Jianshui Purple Pottery, the Lin'an Confucian Temple, and ancient city gates, it is a nationally recognized historical and cultural city.

Overview

Jianshui Ancient Town, historically known as Lin'an, is located in Jianshui County, Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province. It is one of the third batch of National Historical and Cultural Cities announced by the State Council. This ancient town in southern Yunnan, with over 1,200 years of history, enjoys the prestigious titles of "Land of Literature" and "Zoulu of Southern Yunnan."

Unlike highly commercialized ancient towns such as Dali and Lijiang, Jianshui retains a relatively complete city layout and traditional street network. A large number of local residents still live within the ancient town, where ancient well water, purple pottery clay, and a scholarly heritage jointly nurture a unique living culture. The discovery of the ancient human site at Swallow Cave has pushed Jianshui's pottery-making history back by over 4,500 years.

History

The history of Jianshui can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty. A city was built here during the Nanzhao period. Jianshui Prefecture was established in the Yuan Dynasty, and the town reached its peak during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The city walls and gates of Jianshui were constructed during the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty, and Qing Dynasty administrative buildings at the prefectural level, such as the Lin'an Prefectural Government Office, were established here.

During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Jianshui was the cultural center of southern Yunnan, producing numerous imperial examination scholars, hence earning its reputation as the "Land of Literature." Buildings within the ancient town, such as the Confucian Temple, academies, and ancient residences, bear witness to this glorious history.

In 2008, the craftsmanship of Jianshui Purple Pottery was approved by the State Council and listed in the second batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage. In recent years, the Jianshui Purple Pottery Cultural Industry Park has been rated as a National Cultural Industry Demonstration Park.

Cultural Significance

Jianshui is not only a treasure trove of tangible cultural heritage but also a model of living inheritance. The Jianshui Confucian Temple still preserves traditional ceremonies such as the Kaibi Li (Initiating Writing Ceremony), Cheng Tong Li (Youth Ceremony), and Cheng Ren Li (Coming-of-Age Ceremony). It transmits traditional culture to tourists through forms like the Jian Can Li (Simple Meal Ceremony) and public-interest classes on Chinese classical studies.

The Zitaoli (Purple Pottery Lane) block has been rated as a National Nighttime Culture and Tourism Consumption Cluster, serving as a model for the integration of culture and tourism. Jianshui has been selected for Yunnan Province's Top Ten Intangible Cultural Heritage Tourism Routes and was named one of China's "Treasure Small Towns" in 2024.
