Synopsis

West Lake is the soul of Hangzhou, acclaimed as the most beautiful urban park in the world. Its unique layout of "cloud-capped hills on three sides and the city on one side," along with the poetic and picturesque scenery of its ten views that change with the four seasons, makes West Lake one of China's most famous tourist destinations.

Overview

West Lake, located in the heart of Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province, China, is one of China's most famous scenic areas and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Surrounded by hills on three sides and adjacent to the city on one side, the lake covers an area of approximately 6.39 square kilometers. It is divided by the Su Causeway and Bai Causeway into five parts: Outer West Lake, West Inner Lake, North Inner Lake, Little South Lake, and Yue Lake. Renowned for its picturesque landscape and profound cultural heritage, West Lake is celebrated as one of the most beautiful urban lakes in the world.

On June 24, 2011, the West Lake Cultural Landscape of Hangzhou was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Its cultural landscape value lies in its authentic preservation of the lake-and-mountain beauty described in traditional Chinese poetry and painting, which has continuously influenced Chinese garden art and aesthetic concepts for over a millennium.

History and Culture

West Lake boasts a deep and rich cultural heritage. Throughout history, countless literati and poets have left immortal verses inspired by the lake. When Su Shi served as the prefect of Hangzhou, he dredged the lake and built the Su Causeway, leaving behind the timeless line: "I would compare West Lake to Lady West, pretty in a gay dress, and pretty in simple guise." Similarly, Bai Juyi, during his tenure as the governor of Hangzhou, also dredged the lake and wrote the famous line: "My favorite part is east of the lake, where I can never walk enough—the white sand causeway in the shade of green willows."

West Lake is also a significant stage for Chinese folklore. The love story of Lady White Snake and Xu Xian from "The Legend of the White Snake" takes place at the Broken Bridge of West Lake. This tale, regarded as one of China's Four Great Folktales, remains the most romantic cultural symbol of West Lake. Leifeng Pagoda is the very place where, according to legend, the monk Fahai imprisoned Lady White Snake.

Tea Culture — Longjing

West Lake is not only a scenic area but also the origin of Longjing, a famous Chinese tea. Longjing Village, located about 10 kilometers southwest of West Lake, is the core production area of Longjing tea, China's most renowned green tea. Longjing tea is celebrated worldwide for its four unique qualities: jade green color, rich aroma, mellow taste, and beautiful flat shape, ranking first among China's Top Ten Famous Teas.

The picking and processing techniques of Longjing tea are listed as National Intangible Cultural Heritage. Pre-Qingming tea (picked before the Qingming Festival) is the most precious, followed by Pre-Rain tea (picked before the Guyu Festival). Visitors to Longjing Village can experience the entire process of tea picking, processing, and tasting, making it an excellent way to understand Chinese tea culture.
