Synopsis

The wild little pig demon from Langlang Mountain is determined to enter the Great King's Cave, but is forced to leave after accidentally offending the Great King. He forms a grassroots pilgrimage team with a toad spirit, a weasel spirit, and a gorilla monster, embarking on a tumultuous journey to the west.

Overview

Langlang Mountain Little Monster is a fantasy animated film released in mainland China on August 2, 2025. It is jointly produced by Shanghai Animation Film Studio and Shangying Yuan, directed and written by Yu Shui, co-written by Liu Jia, and supervised by Chen Liaoyu. The film is a spin-off of the popular short film Little Monster's Summer from the animated anthology Yao-Chinese Folktales.

The film premiered at the FIRST International Film Festival on July 26, 2025, and was officially released on August 2. It holds a Douban rating of 8.5-8.6, with a cumulative box office exceeding 1.5 billion yuan, breaking the Chinese box office record for domestically produced 2D animated films.

Plot

Set against the backdrop of Journey to the West, the story shifts its perspective to the insignificant "little monsters." On Langlang Mountain, a wild little pig demon is determined to join the King's Cave and become a monster of status. However, an accident causes him to offend the King, forcing him to flee Langlang Mountain.

During his escape, the little pig demon meets other little monsters in similar situations: a toad spirit, a weasel spirit, and an orangutan monster. These four "grassroots" little monsters, by a twist of fate, decide to form their own "scripture-seeking team" and embark on a westward adventure.

On their journey west, the little monsters face numerous trials. They encounter formidable foes like the Yellow-browed Monster and meet unexpected allies such as Maitreya. Through their adventures, this group of little monsters without "extraordinary powers" gradually grows, ultimately proving that even the most insignificant characters can embark on their own path to enlightenment.

Box Office and Reception

Langlang Mountain Little Monster was a dark horse of the 2025 summer film season. Its box office soared after release, from 300 million yuan in the first week to ultimately surpassing 1.5 billion yuan, becoming a milestone for domestic 2D animation. It holds a Douban rating of 8.5 and an IMDb rating of 7.8.

The film broke the box office record for domestic 2D animated films, surpassing several records previously held by Ne Zha. Maoyan Professional Edition once predicted its final box office to be 1.534 billion yuan.

Cultural Impact

The success of Langlang Mountain Little Monster is seen as strong proof of the contemporary value of Chinese aesthetics. Adapted from the short film Little Monster's Summer in Yao-Chinese Folktales, which gained popularity online for its "working-class" perspective, the film continues this commoner's viewpoint, innovatively subverting the classic Journey to the West narrative.

Produced by Shanghai Animation Film Studio, the film continues the artistic style of the Chinese animation school. It extensively employs traditional Chinese ink wash and folk art elements, showcasing the unique aesthetic pursuit of domestic animation. The story of the little pig demon "leaving Langlang Mountain" also resonated strongly with audiences, making it the most talked-about domestic animated film of the 2025 summer.
