However, rarely has a multidisciplinary approach been taken to examine this imagery and challenge and possibly reinterpret old women-related myths and other taken-for-granted aspects (e.g., grammatically inclusive gender). Moreover, this approach can better place the ideologies as myth creators and propagators, identify and deconstruct stereotypes and prejudices, and compare them across cultures with the view to spot universal vs. culturally specific approaches as far as women's studies and interpretations are concerned. It is important to gather these perspectives to translate and unveil new interpretations to old ideas about women and the feminine that are universally accepted as absolute, impossible to challenge, and invalidated truths. The Handbook of Research on Translating Myth and Reality in Women Imagery Across Disciplines is a comprehensive reference book that provides an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary perspective on the perception and reception of women across time and space. It tackles various perspectives: gender studies, linguistic studies, literature and cultural studies, discourse analysis, philosophy, anthropology, sociology, etc. Its main objective is to present new approaches and propose new answers to old questions related to gender inequalities, stereotypes, and prejudices about women and their place in the world. Covering significant themes that include the ethics of embodiment, myth of motherhood at the crossroad of ideologies, translation of women’s experiences and ideas across cultures, and discourses on women’s rehabilitation and dignification across centuries, this book is critical for linguists, professionals, researchers, academicians, and students working in the fields of women’s studies, gender studies, cultural studies, and literature, as well as other related categories such as political studies, education studies, philosophy, and the social sciences.

An interdisciplinary perspective will be used in the attempt to cross-fertilize insights form critical discourse approach and cognitive linguistics that will hopefully contribute to a better understanding of how the language employed conveys stereotyped ideas and metaphors that pervade (many times unconsciously) people's way of talking. Proverbs, taken as language samples potentially revelatory of some cognitive bases of the way people have been thinking and talking about women throughout time, will be analyzed. The idea that gender is socially and discursively constructed will be thus reinforced. Implicit stereotyping, a concept borrowed from social psychology, will be employed to demonstrate that unconscious exposure to stereotyped knowledge influences people's judgements and relations with other social categories. It will be equated to what is called cognitive metaphor in cognitive linguistics a...

Translation is approached here as one of the most important and effective instruments that mediate cultural and linguistic knowledge and, thus, help us better understand the other’s culture and values. Consequently, translation is looked at not only as a transfer from one cultural environment to another, but also as an agent of change. The book comprises a wide range of articles, written in Romanian and English, that approach the concept of translation and its cultural and linguistic implications.

Building Cultural Bridges in the Translation of Irony and Humour, 2024

In other words, it goes beyond the scope of linguistic translation, and it may instead be qualified as an instance of cultural translation that attempts to identify bridges between different worldviews. Hence, translation is seen here as a creative and dynamic process by which linguistic, cultural and social meanings in the source culture are transposed into equivalent meanings in the target culture. Cultural environments not often represented in the mainstream literature, such as Finland, Galicia, Macedonia and Romania, are present in this volume.

By exploring such culture-sensitive mechanisms of creating and translating irony and humour, rendered by equally sensitive linguistic strategies and solutions, the book is transdisciplinary; given its eclectic character and the theoretical and practical issues it tackles, the book will interest a wide range of people: translation scholars, linguists, language teachers, translators, interpreters, and translation graduates and postgraduates.

We hold translation as one of the essential instruments that facilitate the contact between cultures and languages and, thus, mediates the intercultural communication and knowledge.
This second volume, Myths, Legends and Fairytales in Romania and across the World, comprises a total of 17 contributions divided into four sections, quite complex and diverse in structure and content: translation and adaptation of culture-bound elements, cultural patterns across time and space, methodology
and didactics and text reception.
