Library Review, May 1, 2005

Of the 358 paraprofessionals in those libraries, only 28 (approximately 8 per cent) were ICT‐literate, while the vast majority, some 330 (approximately 92 per cent), were ICT‐illiterate. Of the 1,133 “other” staff members in the survey, a minimal 69 (6 per cent) staff were ICT‐literate, while 1,064 (approximately 94 per cent) were ICT‐illiterate.Research limitations/implicationsThe questionnaire basis of the investigation gives room for subjective distortions in assessment of levels of literacy; the investigation only considered two categories of skills, “literacy” and “illiteracy”, without gradations between these categories.Practical implicationsThe conclusion reached was that Nigerian university library professionals and paraprofessionals should acquire an enhanced level of ICT literacy: both staff training and an adequate ICT infrastructure were recommended.Originality/valueThe paper gives a representative overview of the attainment level of library staff in an important area of professional competence, and shows the importance of addressing the gap between the desired levels of ICT literacy and the actual levels.

Health workers' ICT literacy in a Nigerian University Teaching Hospital
Information Technologist (The), 2010
This study investigated the ICT literacy among the health workers of Igbinedion University Teachi... more This study investigated the ICT literacy among the health workers of Igbinedion University Teaching Hospital. The emergence of Internet for Telemedicine and health information revolution necessitates that issue of computer and other communication technology literacy among the health workers of Igbinedion University Teaching Hospital be investigated in order to appraise the situation and offer suggestions and recommendations where necessary. A survey method was adopted to elicit information from the respondents for this study. A questionnaire was designed with 26 structured questions including the biography of the respondent. Two hundred (200) copies of the questionnaires were distributed among the staff of Igbinedion University Teaching Hospital and one hundred and eighty eight (188) were returned. The avalanche of health information on the ICT media and the ability of health workers to access them for professional and personal use necessitated the study. Analysis of data was carried out by using simple average and percentage calculations. Among other things, the study revealed that greater number of respondents, 140 which represents 74.5% of the sampled population are aware of the use of ICT equipment in health institutions. Media and friends are the major sources of awareness to the respondents. This study also revealed that 124 respondents, which represents 66% of the sample were aware of telemedicine but unfortunately 144 representing 76.6% do not have ICT equipment in their various departments. However, the study also revealed that in the respondents' assessment on the attitude of health workers in IUTH to the use of ICT, they observed that non-availability of ICT equipment has hindered the health workers from showing serious interest, leading to a widespread apathy towards ICT because of lack of facilities for their use. This study concluded from its findings that greater numbers of health workers in the developing nations are becoming aware of the use of ICT in health institutions to increase the effectiveness of health care services delivery. A survey research design was adopted by the study and random sampling technique was used to select 265 medical doctors from a population of 822. Primary data were obtained on socioeconomic characteristics of the respondents, level of accessibility, frequency and various core skills of health information resources using a structured questionnaire and focus group discussion (FGD). Data were analyzed using frequency counts, percentage and mean. Results revealed that 59.8% of the respondents were male while 51.1% were female. Findings, however, showed that pattern recognition from experience ( ̄ = 3.32), critical thinking without emotion (̄ = 3.16), hypothesis updating (̄ = 3.607) and perception based confidence (̄ = 2.97) were the core skills used by the medical doctors in clinical decision making. Also, the year-wise growth of research articles; authorship pattern and collaboration ratio; subject distribution of articles and institutional affiliation of authors were examined. A descriptive informetrics research design was adopted. The journal was selected based on its consistency and popularity. Data collected through a self-designed checklist was analysed using frequency count and percentage. The findings revealed that 134 articles, contributed by 252 authors were published in Nigerian Libraries from 2009-2018. An annual average growth of 31.56% was observed. Overall year-wise authorship pattern revealed that majority of 60.45% articles published in Nigerian Libraries were multiple authored. Also, articles on ICT dominated Nigerian Libraries. Some subject areas not covered were identified, such as indexing and serial collections management. Average collaborative index across the 10-year period was 0.60, while majority of the contributors were from universities, with only a fraction from the polytechnics. The study, therefore, recommended that awareness should be created by the publishers to familiarise the researchers with the publishing requirements of the journal. Also, LIS researchers (especially in polytechnics and colleges of education) should engage more in research activities and publish such in reputable journals; and concentrate more on areas usually left untouched by previous studies.

Inadequate supply from the national grid, land and water pollution from oil spillage in the oil producing communities among other factors have led Nigeria and indeed the world to look for alternative power supply such as solar energy. Unfortunately, utilization and development of solar energy is rising in other parts of the world but encountered with low pace of development and utilization in Nigeria. This paper reports a survey carried out to investigate the awareness and use of solar energy as alternative power source for ICT facilities in Nigerian library and information centres. Descriptive research design using survey method was adopted for this study. Questionnaire was designed and used as survey instrument. The population for this study i...

Potential solution is to use media resources offering information and support for health problems. Young adults' access to health information is a function of their ability to search for and find answers to their health related questions. Media resources like television (TV), radio, newspapers, magazines, video, electronic readers and Internet can be valuable sources of health information that can help youth understand their health issues.Information is the first step to every healthy choice. This requires full access to information about the human body, their workings in health and illness, and the services available in treatment and care, support an...

This creates specialization, expertise, and improved quality. Job specialization design in the workplace is frequently seen where a worker focuses on one specific task and ability during the entire work shift. The task frequently repeats all day long. Because job specialization allows significant expertise build-up in a specific task, the learning and speed of production happen faster. The job does not involve complex processes, so it can be taught faster to new workers. In theory, this approach reduces quality control costs and improves production efficiency (Thibodaux, 2012).The downside of job specialization tends to be that people can only do one task. They aren't trained to multitask or handle multiple areas of a workplace. As a result, when a critical expertise is lost, the process can suffer. Additionally, workers under job specialization don...
