Attention is paid especially to several elements such as the different types of handwriting, the use of recto and/or verso, the quality of the papyrus, and the use of physical reinforcements. Each element is examined in the light of its relationship with the content of the text of individual items, in the attempt of shedding light on the purpose of these works and the cultural context in which they were produced.

I 1-12, this paper focuses on a vexata quaestio concerning Stesichorus: whether he composed one or two poems entitled Παλινωιδια. It suggests a new supplement (λεγομενη, scil. παλινωιδια), explores the possible meaning of the participle λεγομενοσ (as well as of καλουμενοσ) with regard to book titles by comparing different literary sources, and suggests explanations for its function in this passage.

Samuele Coen (University of Oxford), The Materiality of the Evidence: Palaeography and Bibliology of Hypomnemata In this paper I will examine the palaeographical and bibliological features of ancient commentaries, such as types of handwriting, use of recto and verso (and of recycled papyrus), lectional and critical signs, abbreviations, and corrections. This study will shed light on the context of production, use, and conservation of the hypomnemata, as well as on the different types of audience they were meant for. König. The scrap contains a property contract written in a beautiful bookhand, belonging to the so-called ‘epsilon-theta’ style, which can be assigned to the 1st century BC/AD. After a brief presentation of the papyrus in terms of palaeography and content, I intend to provide some observations on documentary papyri written in literary hands based on a selection of relevant examples. Although some general or more narrowly-focused studies have been made on certain categories of documents in bookhand, a general assessment is yet to come, and this paper would represent a first step in this sense. These will be analysed with respect to their typology (private letters, petitions, contracts, etc) and their date; their official or private nature will be also taken into account. Attention will be paid also to papyri preserving scribe exercises and, in general, texts written by the same person in different handwritings, due to their relevance in understanding the aim of the manuscript.

After some initial study by a student (P. N. M. van Arendonk) who explored the fragments’ provenance in an exam paper, two of them were published by his teacher Rob Salomons and the Amsterdam-based papyrologist Klaas Worp in 1985, whereas the other five have remained unpublished until now. In the context of a Radboud Summer School in Nijmegen in 2021, we studied the remaining fragments, and the current article presents editions of 5 further fragments (P.Noviom. inv. 1, 3, 5, 6 (descr.), and 7), prepared by the international group of graduate student participants under our supervision, as well as that of Daniela Colomo.
