The Scholarship Program
Obtaining a college education is expensive, and the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts strives to provide some financial assistance to students living in Franklin, Hampden and Hampshire counties to help them achieve their goal of graduating from college. We have over 160 different scholarship funds, and each year we give away over 1,000 individual scholarship awards. This equates to approximately $1.4 million in scholarships.
See our
Scholarship and Loan Program FAQ
for more information.
Scholarships are provided for one academic year and are not automatically renewed each year. You can reapply to our program every year you are going to attend college, and the application you submit that year will be considered for all scholarships for which you are eligible.
Our Timeline
January 1:
The
online scholarship application
opens, and students can apply.
March 1:
The
online scholarship application
closes.
Late June:
Scholarship recipients are selected. Applicants are notified by email if they did receive a scholarship. Recipients must complete the electronic form they were sent at the time of award notification by the deadline indicated.
Late July:
Scholarship money is sent directly to the recipient’s college.
Please note that students do not apply to a specific scholarship(s). Students complete
one online application through our website
and we match them to all scholarships for which they meet the eligibility.
Students interested in being considered for an interest-free educational loan must submit a separate application. Visit our
loans page
for more information.
Who Is Eligible to Apply for Our Scholarships
Any student who plans to enroll for the upcoming fall semester, in any year of college as an undergraduate or graduate student and who will attend an accredited post-secondary school in the United States.
Most scholarships are for students who live in Franklin, Hampshire, and Hampden Counties. However, some are also available to students who live in Berkshire County and Hartford County in Connecticut.
We offer scholarships to those who attend on either a full-time or part-time basis.
We are proud to support students from all backgrounds and experiences.
Completing Our Scholarship Application Process
Step 1:
Between January and March 1, the
application is available here
Step 2:
Create an account or return to your existing account if you have applied for scholarships or loans since the 2021-2022 academic school year. DO NOT create a new account if an account exists. If you don’t remember your credentials and can’t access your existing account, contact
scholar@communityfoundation.org
Step 3:
Upload your most recent transcript (no more than 30 days old) through the portal. You do not have to submit an official transcript but to be acceptable the transcript must show:
Your name
The name of your college or high school, or clearly indicate the name of your school in the URL if you are printing from a student portal
All classes you have taken, with your grades, and those you are currently taking
Your cumulative GPA (if your school calculates GPA)
In all cases, Community Foundation reserves the right to request an official transcript.
Step 4:
Upload the FAFSA Submission Summary (FSS), formerly the Student Aid Report, MASFA, AACTUS (only from residents of Hartford County), you have completed for the next academic year.
Do not upload the FSS for the academic year in which you are currently enrolled.
Note:
For applicants who do not qualify for FAFSA or MASFA, please
contact the Education Team
at the Community Foundation for further instructions.
Step 5:
Answer all the applicable questions and submit your application.
Step 6:
Return to the portal often and make sure the email you entered when setting up your account is one you will have access to throughout the summer and fall (you can edit this in your account at any time). All communication about your application status, including the acceptance or declination notification, will be sent by email.
Note:
We will do our best to communicate with you if your application has an error, but this may not always be possible due to the high volume of applications. It is your responsibility to make sure your application is correct, and you have submitted a complete and accurate transcript and FSS by 11:59PM, March 1. Once the application closes you will not be able to make changes regardless of when you submitted it. We recommend you apply at least three weeks before the deadline to avoid issues.
Our Scholarship Selection Process
Selection committees, comprised of community members from Franklin, Hampshire and Hampden counties, volunteer their time to read applications and select recipients who are then approved by the Community Foundation’s Distribution Committee and Board of Directors.
Reviewers read your entire application and review your academic transcript. Selecting recipients is a very hard job! There are so many excellent applicants, and it’s the reviewers’ job to choose one or a few recipients for a specific scholarship fund. Except for a few awards, a student’s financial need is strongly taken into consideration. A student’s complete academic history is also considered, as are the essays. Reviewers really want to learn something about you that they haven’t learned from the rest of your application.
Awards are made subject to availability and to the policies of the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts. These policies are available for review upon request.

Additional Guidelines
Students can receive up to $3,000 in scholarships from the Community Foundation.
Scholarship awards could impact the financial aid offered by a college, and students are advised to check with their college financial aid offices about this.
Scholarships may be used to offset tuition, fees, room and board, and other items included as part of the cost for attending the institution. Some part and/or all the award could be considered taxable income. It is advisable students check with the college or tax accountant regarding this matter.
Scholarship Descriptions
The Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts administers over 160 scholarships. Some of the funds help students from a particular school or area; others provide financial assistance to those pursuing a specific field of study; still others assist students that are most in need. Students who apply to the Scholarship program may be eligible for many of these funds. Once a student completes the online application,
the Community Foundation will determine all funds for which a student may be eligible.
