The boiserie is an artifact made of faux marble with included seminato elements (marmette) and characterized by the presence of assembly plastering. The study aimed to identify its constituent materials, reconstruct the production technique, and understand its conservation state to carry out a critical restoration work which respected the boiserie from a material, historical and aesthetic point of view. Non-invasive analysis took place in situ (colorimetry, pXRF, UVF) and in laboratory (POM, SEM-EDS, µRaman, XRPD). The results revealed the use of Sorel cement for the faux marble elements (including the assemblage plastering) and the use of Portland cement in the seminato elements and in the structural layers of the panels, other than the alteration products. Macroscopic and petrographic observations made possible to reconstruct the technique of realization of the boiserie and guide restoration.

This site is known since the first half of the twentieth century for the pioneering research of Nino Lamboglia both in the field of the first experiences of stratigraphic archaeology and for an embryonic reading of the walls. After further investigations by the Soprintendenza della Liguria, the archaeological complex has been the subject of new studies since 2014. At this moment, the Politecnico di Milano was involved in surveying activities, and extensive use of archaeometric investigations was made. In particular, the minero-petrographic analysis of the mortars and the C14 on the lime clumps allowed reaching new significant knowledge in the scanning of construction activities and their dating.

UAV photogrammetry is vital in capturing detailed aerial imagery of the aqueduct and its surroundings. Drones with high-resolution cameras acquire precise and accurate data from multiple perspectives. Subsequently, the acquired data are processed to generate orthophotos, drawings and historic building information modelling (HBIM) of the aqueduct, contributing to the future development of a digital twin. Virtual and augmented reality (VR-AR) technology is then employed to create an immersive experience for users. By leveraging XR, individuals can virtually explore and interact with the aqueduct, providing realistic and captivating visualisation of the archaeological site. The successful application of the scan-to-HBIM-to-XR pro...

Research paper thumbnail of Interactive and Immersive Digital Representation for Virtual Museum: VR and AR for Semantic Enrichment of Museo Nazionale Romano, Antiquarium di Lucrezia Romana and Antiquarium di Villa Dei Quintili

The purpose is to increase the narration, fruition, and dissemination of the findings that emerged from the archaeological investigations carried out in a large sector of the south-eastern suburbs of Rome. In this context, the research proposes a process oriented toward designing a virtual museum of the first group of works from the Appia Antica Archaeological Park and now exhibited at the Museo Nazionale Romano, the Antiquarium di Lucrezia Romana, and the Antiquarium di Villa Dei Quintili. Managing high historical and cultural findings through geometrical surveys, high-resolution data from 3D survey analysis, archival research, and interactive digital representation is the aim of the study. The digitisation of artefacts has made it possible to build new forms of communication that enrich virtual and on-site visits wi...

In this perspective, the Appia Antica Archaeological Park aims to support research in digitising infrastructures and archaeological contexts of high historical and cultural value to plan short- and medium-term preservation and maintenance projects. In this context, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are tools with enormous potential in survey, inspection and digitisation, providing the basis for the subsequent phases of data interpretation, representation and material analysis. Thanks to the photorealistic reconstruction of dense structure from motion (DSfM) in the application of structural inspections, today it is possible to intercept the geometry and material ...
