STLPR 2025 Annual Report
2025 Impact Report
St. Louis Public Radio
July 2024-June 2025
Irrepressible
From our leadership
Local journalism is essential to the health of our region. It delivers accurate information to help people find and share resources, make decisions, and understand one another. St. Louis Public Radio continues to thrive and make our region a better place to live, despite headwinds against journalism that serves the public interest. Our impact is real: Every year, we hear from multiple nonprofit organizations who report receiving an uptick in donations after appearing on
St. Louis on the Air
. This past year, our health coverage on whooping cough helped connect pediatric infectious disease doctors across different health care systems and our reporting on deadly conditions at the city jail prompted advocates to take action.
In May, St. Louis experienced tragedy when an EF3 tornado touched down, destroying lives and landscapes. STLPR provided timely and accurate information, asked tough questions of elected officials, and led coverage with humanity and empathy. We heard directly from community members who appreciated our consistent, extended coverage of the tornado and ongoing recovery. We will continue to highlight the fortitude of St. Louisans with reports that only strong local media can provide.
STLPR also experienced a challenging year as an organization. When federal funding for public media was rescinded for the first time in our 53-year history, we saw more than 6% of our annual budget disappear and a gap of over a half-million dollars emerge.
We asked urgently for sustaining support. It was your generous donations and words of encouragement that helped us provide premier service under difficult circumstances. STLPR’s staff, in turn, feels an enduring responsibility to serve the people in our region with truthful reporting, community events that engage and spark joy, and a sense of place and belonging in confounding times. You have us, and we have you.
STLPR is now proudly funded 100% by members and sponsors, and we are continuing our march toward independent operations after decades of fruitful partnership as a service of UMSL. This operational independence will allow us to be more nimble and more sustainable for the years ahead, and to grow and evolve with the needs of our audiences.
STLPR’s commitment to St. Louis runs deep. As you explore the ways we’ve connected people and ideas through our award-winning work over the last year, we’re looking ahead, imagining how STLPR can expand our service and further our mission to inform and create a more inspired and engaged public, right here in the region we all share.
With gratitude,
Jess Luther, Interim General Manager

Weathering the storm
On the afternoon of May 16, 2025, an EF3 tornado touched down in the St. Louis area, causing destruction along its nearly 23-mile path. The storm left five fatalities, 38 injuries, and enormous economic and emotional scars.
The STLPR newsroom emerged from sheltering in place to canvas and document the wake of the tornado and to provide St. Louisans with the information they needed to stay safe and manage fallout from the storm. Journalists filed
report after report
capturing the loss, grief, and tremendous resilience of St. Louis communities, from immediate aftermath to the progress of the long, slow recovery.
The STLPR newsroom worked across disciplines to deliver the story, and the work proceeds as the recovery continues.
STLPR’s political team chased down answers on what neighbors could expect from local, state, and federal response. Our economic development reporter tackled the financial impact on neighborhoods. Our education reporter followed the fate of shuttered schools in the tornado’s path. Our race and culture reporter tracked the slow pace of debris removal and historic underinsurance in disinvested neighborhoods.
To accompany excellent audio storytelling and digital news stories, photographs from STLPR’s visuals team were incorporated by the National Weather Service into the official historical record of the May 16 tornado.
“The power of public radio”
That’s how one St. Louisan referred to the happy conclusion of her weekslong fight to get aid from FEMA for a home left ravaged by the storm. After several calls from reporter and afternoon newscaster Marissanne Lewis-Thompson, the family’s aid status shifted from denied, to under review, to approved.
Independence
In February,
the University of Missouri-St. Louis announced that governance of St. Louis Public Radio would transition to an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization
, the
Friends of KWMU Inc.
, marking a pivotal step in the station’s evolution.
Across the country, public media stations like STLPR are exploring independent operational models to gain the agility needed to respond to new challenges and opportunities in real time.
This decision will make the editorially independent STLPR a fully member-supported service, completely financially independent of the university. It’s a bold move that reflects STLPR’s strength and high esteem within the community.
STLPR receives historic grant to bridge divides
In December 2024, the James S. McDonnell Foundation awarded St. Louis Public Radio an $800,000 grant, to be distributed over four years — the largest foundation grant in STLPR’s history.
The award will fund
a new media program encouraging St. Louisans to talk across differences
. Drawing inspiration from StoryCorps’ One Small Step program, the newly titled “Meet Me” initiative will help area residents better understand the divides that shape our region and show how St. Louisans from all walks of life are working to bridge them.
“Meet Me” will air on STLPR’s flagship talk show, St. Louis on the Air, on social media, and at stlpr.org, and will host an independent podcast and newsletter. “Meet Me” is scheduled to launch in January 2026.
STLPR launches statehouse internship with grant from the RCJF
St. Louis Public Radio added to its coverage of the Missouri legislature by
launching a statehouse reporting internship
in partnership with the River City Journalism Fund.
The St. Louis-based journalism nonprofit awarded STLPR $13,200 to staff an intern at the Capitol building in Jefferson City from January through May 2025.
This paid internship position helped STLPR cover the high-volume, day-to-day legislative activity at the Capitol. The station is seeking ongoing funding for 2026 and beyond.
The intern works alongside Statehouse Reporter Sarah Kellogg (pictured).
New visionaries & voices
Brian Heffernan
Managing Editor of Audience & Product
Rob Edwards
Managing Editor of News
New leadership
Following an extensive national search, St. Louis Public Radio named Rob Edwards the station’s first Managing Editor of News and appointed Brian Heffernan, formerly the station’s interim news director, as the first Managing Editor of Audience and Product.
Edwards will set the station’s vision for news coverage, investigations, and special reports, while Heffernan will oversee audience development and distribution of news across STLPR’s broadcast and digital platforms.
The dual managing editor roles will allow STLPR to deepen news coverage and anticipate the needs of digital-first, technology-driven news consumers.
Hiba Ahmad
Education Reporter
Kavahn Mansouri
Economic Development Reporter
New specialists
Thanks to the financial support of local St. Louis Public Radio listeners, STLPR also continued to strengthen its beat reporting with subject-matter specialists covering local issues with skill, commitment, and depth.
Hiba Ahmad jumped into a fast-evolving local scene as STLPR’s education reporter and Economic Development Reporter Kavahn Mansouri joined STLPR after a three-year stint as an investigative reporter. Both reporters deepen STLPR’s capacity for in-depth reporting on issues that are critical to the region.
Ahmad previously served as producer for NPR's "Weekend Edition," "All Things Considered," and "Up First" news magazines.

Election 2024
St. Louis leaned heavily on STLPR to inform the vote, with a well-received 2024 Election Guide and politics coverage racking up more than 261,000 page views before election night.
STLPR coordinated Election Day coverage across the bistate region, with more than 20 staffers working overnight to provide the latest online and on-air news reports. St. Louisans mulled local impacts with a special edition of the “Politically Speaking Hour on St. Louis on the Air” featuring the STLPR politics team live on Nov. 5.
For the November election and again for the spring 2025 primaries, readers came to us not only to feel prepared to cast a ballot, but they also came to us for clarity on the results.
Defunded
In 2025, public media faced its greatest existential threat, as calls to defund NPR culminated in a direct appeal to Congress by the president.
On May 2, 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to cut funds for the nation’s public media stations, impacting NPR, PBS, and the more than 1,300 local public media stations across the country, including STLPR.
Months of hopeful waiting and watching ended on July 18 when Congress voted to fully defund the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
An urgent STLPR infographics campaign argued for the value of public radio. St. Louis responded with thousands of calls and emails to legislators to protect their public media.
But not defeated
St. Louis would not allow defunding to deter us from our mission. St. Louis Public Radio launched an urgent one-week fundraising campaign, appealing to our community on air, on social media, and in written appeals. In an
extraordinary showing of support
, the station raised over $800,000 from more than 2,450 donors. The money raised replaced the $575,000 in annual federal funding that was eliminated by Congress for 2026 and then some, providing a blueprint for defeating the now annual funding hole we must escape.
The loss of federal funding still creates a wide gap between our new reality and our important needs and plans for growth, but thanks to our community, we are inspired, not dismayed.
At a moment when we are witnessing the creep of news deserts, the silencing of voices willing to hold power to account and the shrinking of newsrooms, the need for a free and fearless press has never been greater.
STLPR will keep broadening our coverage, deepening our service, and reaching more of our region, and continued support from our community will light the way. Community support allows us to look forward with resolve and optimism — free, local, and fearless.
Defunded but not defeated.
Hear the Future 2025
St. Louis Public Radio's sold-out
Hear the Future
celebration was a record-breaking success. More than 400 friends and staff of STLPR gathered to celebrate the power of public service journalism at the Four Seasons Hotel on May 2. Despite increasing threats to federal public media funding at the time, the mood was inspired and celebratory.
Special guests Kenny Malone, co-host of “Planet Money,” and Wailin Wong of Planet Money's “The Indicator” brought laughter and levity with a stage production of “Planet Money: A Love Letter to FRED," starring everyone's favorite database of economic indicators from the St. Louis Federal Reserve.
A lively auction and compelling fund-the-need presentation raised $350,000.
STLPR in the spotlight
We Live Here: Let’s Talk About It
STLPR brought back the "We Live Here" podcast in 2024 to help St. Louisans talk through how the events of the Ferguson Uprising in 2014 shaped the region some ten years on. Neighbors gathered to meet the subjects of the podcast season, and to share their visions for a stronger St. Louis. The event was just one of dozens of community gatherings that brought neighbors face to face for a thoughtful exchange of ideas and a dose of inspiration.
Neighbors gathered to meet the subjects of the podcast season and the hosts, including Reporter Chad Davis (pictured), and to share their vision for a stronger St. Louis.
The BBC in St. Louis
St. Louis Public Radio hosted two international programs in a new collaboration with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
“The BBC Arts Hour on Tour” visited to showcase local artists before an international audience. Host Nikki Bedi was joined onstage by creatives from the St. Louis region for a show that included live music, stand-up comedy, and artist conversations. The event was recorded live at UMSL's Touhill Performing Arts Center on Sept. 10, 2024, and broadcast on STLPR on Sept. 30.
STLPR also played host to British journalist James Menendez and the BBC World Service show “Newshour.” The London-based show broadcast compelling St. Louis stories live from STLPR’s studios on Oct. 9 to the BBC’s world audience.
NPR’s Michel Martin returns to host ‘#Ferguson and Beyond'
NPR “Morning Edition” host Michel Martin led a conversation with STLPR, panelists, and community members for “#Ferguson and Beyond: A Community Conversation 10 Years Later.” The event offered the public an opportunity for reflection and thoughtful discussion on the death of Michael Brown Jr. and the Ferguson Uprising. The night was a follow-up to a four-hour community conversation with Martin that aired nationally in 2015.
Martin also hosted NPR’s “Morning Edition” from STLPR studios the week of the event. Her community discussion aired on St. Louis on the Air, and portions of the program aired on public media stations across the country.
Award-winning journalism

STLPR stands out because it delivers actual news — not sensationalism, not opinion disguised as fact, but real journalism. It brings in all perspectives, amplifies all voices, and asks the hard questions — objectively and fairly — to everyone. It’s not just about politics or policy; STLPR understands that art and culture are essential to how we make sense of society. By weaving together news, culture, and thoughtful analysis, STLPR provides a fuller, more meaningful picture of the world — one that informs, challenges, and connects us.

In Memory of Bob McCabe
STLPR staff
mourn the loss of Bob McCabe
, former morning host who retired in 2013 after working at the station for almost 25 years. “Bob played the role of trusted, friendly guide to the mornings of thousands of St. Louisans, a role he played so well, and for which he was appreciated,” said host Mike Schrand. McCabe was 80 years old.
