What are all the signs at the North end of the Airport?
Historical records show the airport land was acquired in 1967 by Franklin County, partially funded by an FAA grant.  The town assumed the ownership of the airport when it was incorporated in 1972.  When the FAA funds airports there are requirements (grant assurances) that the airport owner must follow.  The FAA has contributed approximately $2,500,000 since 1999 to airport maintenance and improvement projects.  (typically 90% of cost)
One of the requirements of the FAA is that any property purchased utilizing an FAA grant must be used solely for aeronautical purposes.  In 2023 the FAA became aware that on the north end of the airport property (via satellite imagery and physical inspections) non-aeronautical activity was taking place. In January 2024 an FAA compliance specialist visited and met with town officials and indicated that this use needed to be addressed or we may not be able to secure further grants from the FAA. The town has worked with our airport consultants over the last 12 months to obtain a non-aeronautical use permit from the FAA for the next 50 years of the parking lot behind the snowmobile club and trail to the narrow gauge bridge and also a trail south along the tree line to route 27.
The signs recently erected are to inform users to stay on the designated trail or Old Huse Mill Road for access to the Narrow Gauge trail.  Improvements to the trail were made to ease the use of the trail and delineate it from the general airport property. The general airport property in this area is considered the Runway Protection Zone which is an FAA designated space to restrict movement for obvious safety reasons. We are grateful to the FAA for working with the town and issuing a non-aeronautical use permit for this part of the airport property and with everyone’s cooperation we will be able to enjoy the use of this property for many years.
