Synopsis

Shen Xing, a young laborer stranded in the lawless borderlands of Sanbianpo, struggles to survive among multiple factions under the guidance of the fixer Uncle Chai, embarking on a story of adventure and humanity.

Escape from the Trilateral Slopes (Chinese: 《边水往事》) is a 2024 Chinese mainland suspense adventure drama set in a fictional foreign land. It was directed and written by Suan (Mou Xincen), co-written by Cui Xiaoxue, and produced by Cao Baoping. The series is adapted from Shen Xingxing's documentary novel of the same name, starring Guo Qilin and Francis Ng, with Wang Xun, Jiang Qilin, Jiang Qiming, and Qi Xi in supporting roles. It premiered exclusively on Youku Video on August 16, 2024, with a total of 21 episodes.

Set in the fictional tropical "Trilateral Slopes," the drama tells the story of a low-level nobody struggling to survive in the cracks between multiple forces. After its release, it achieved a Douban rating of 8.2, making it one of the highest-rated suspense dramas of 2024.

Plot

"Trilateral Slopes" is a chaotic tropical foreign land, a mottled place where prosperity and decay coexist.

Shen Xing (played by Guo Qilin), a young worker who accidentally ends up in the Trilateral Slopes, meets Uncle Cai (played by Francis Ng), a "mediator" who navigates between various forces. Under Uncle Cai's guidance, Shen Xing gradually learns the survival skills needed in this dangerous territory.

However, as the plot progresses, Shen Xing finds himself drawn into a vortex far more complex and dangerous than he imagined. Drugs, gambling, gangs, warlords—in this lawless land, everyone struggles between staying and escaping.

The series was produced by Cao Baoping. Cao Baoping is a renowned Chinese director known for works such as The Dead End and Cock and Bull, celebrated for his realist style. His involvement brought a strong sense of realism to the series.

Director Suan previously gained attention for the film Across the Furious Sea and specializes in suspense-themed creations. The series adopts a fictional world setting, placing the story in the imaginary tropical foreign land "Trilateral Slopes," granting greater creative freedom.

The series aired exclusively on Youku's "White Night Theater" and is a representative work of "Made in Sichuan" web dramas. After its release, it became one of the hit series of the 2024 summer season, ranking first on Youku's charts.
