The Luce Experience
Life on the Luce
What is the Luce Experience?
Thirteen Months of Language Training, Cultural Immersion, and Learning on the Job
Your Luce Year will run from June to July of the following year. You’ll begin with an orientation and two months of intensive language training, equipping you with the linguistic skills necessary to thrive in your host country. Then, you’ll head to your job placement and work there for the rest of the year,
immersing yourself in the local culture, forging connections with colleagues, and contributing to the betterment of your host community.
While fully involved in your job placement, you will also have the chance to reunite with your cohort for a brief but invaluable break, where you will reflect and share experiences.

Where Will I Be Placed?
Your Placement Is Tailored to You
The Program’s most unique feature is the individually tailored placement. Once Scholars are selected in January, our team contacts them individually to discuss their interests and expectations and relate those interests to work opportunities in Asia.
Our team explores specific placement opportunities in the Spring and makes arrangements with host institutions. This process is usually completed in May. We try to match each Scholar’s background, experience, training, and aspirations with an appropriate placement.
See below for a map of where our current scholars are placed, and to learn more about them.

Placement FAQs
The program’s most unique feature is the individually tailored placement. Once Scholars are chosen in January, the Luce Scholars Program team contacts them individually to discuss their interests and expectations and relate those interests to work opportunities in Asia.
The Luce Scholars Program team explores specific placement opportunities in the Spring and makes arrangements with host institutions. This process is usually completed in May and is based on ongoing conversations with each Scholar. We try to match each Scholar’s background, experience, training, and aspirations with an appropriate placement.
Yes, Scholars are expected to play an active role in researching potential placement institutions, particularly in highly technical fields. Our team works individually with each Luce Scholar, guiding them through the process and offering placement organization suggestions and options. A Scholar’s adviser or own contacts can help provide names of individuals or organizations in Asia with whom The Asia Foundation may wish to discuss possible placements. The initial direct contact with potential host institutions, however, is the responsibility of The Asia Foundation.
Yes. Once selected, candidates complete an onboarding form and engage in a series of conversations with the Luce Scholars Program team.
No. The specifics of a Scholar’s work in Asia will depend on the assignment negotiated with their host institution.
No. The Luce Scholars Program is experiential, not academic. Scholars will find that their job assignments leave them little time to pursue independent research.
Luce Scholars are active in Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, and Timor Leste. We are currently not making placements in China, Hong Kong due to work visa restrictions, and Myanmar due to U.S. State Department restrictions.
No. The Program provides for a single, eleven-month professional placement in one country. Scholars often find that eleven months is scarcely enough time to begin understanding one Asian culture, let alone attempt to immerse themselves in two.
Many Scholars prefer to rent an apartment in Asia during their year, which is a realistic option in most urban areas. Some have chosen to live with a local family for the language and cultural dimension that such an arrangement can provide. Still, others have found more inventive options, such as lodging in a local monastery. The choice is the Scholar’s. However, The Asia Foundation’s local office will guide you through this and other aspects of the settling-in process.
In a few instances, institutional housing is provided by a Scholar’s host institution in Asia. More often, working with the advice and assistance of The Asia Foundation’s local office, the Scholars seek out their housing once they have arrived in their country of placement. In either instance, The Asia Foundation arranges temporary lodging for those first few days, usually in a guest house or hotel.
Yes, stipends are based on a three-tier system considering the U.S. Department of State’s Cost-of-Living Index and housing costs for each country. Scholars should be able to live comfortably without recourse to personal savings or other income sources, regardless of where they are placed.

What Will I Be Doing?
A Year in the Life of a Luce Scholar
After the Luce Scholar Orientation, Scholars undergo two months of intensive language training in their country of placement. Following the training, they begin an 11-month work placement. In mid-December, Scholars gather for the December Leadership Institute to share experiences. At the end of the 13-month program, they reconvene at the Scholars’ Symposium to reconnect, reflect, and share their Luce year in Asia.
Preparation for Your Year Away
Orientation
Luce Scholars’ journey begins in April with a series of virtual sessions and a five-day in-person orientation program in Asia in late June. These programs build community and prepare you for a year of living and working in Asia.
Connecting through Language
Language Immersion
Luce Scholars engage in intensive language training in their respective placement countries in July and August. Language study is a program requirement and is fully funded by the Luce Foundation through the intensive two-month period. Additional funds are available to each Luce Scholar for continued language training throughout their Luce Year.
Working Within the Community
Professional Placement
Individually tailored professional placements—a hallmark of the Luce Scholars program—begin in early September and are arranged for each Scholar based on their professional interest, background, and qualifications. These assignments, where Luce Scholars work alongside Asian colleagues, are the heart of the Luce Scholar experience.
Specific placements have included:
An architect’s atelier in Tokyo
A dance theater in Kuala Lumpur
An agricultural and environmental center in Hanoi
An economic growth initiative in Ulaanbaatar
A pediatric hospital in Bangkok
A TV network in Beijing
Sharing Experiences
December Leadership Institute
In addition to the professional placement, the Luce Scholars cohort is an essential part of the Luce Year. Individuals share their experiences with their fellow Luce Scholars through regular group meetings and bonds of mutual learning, understanding, and support as they face shared challenges and serendipities.
The cohort convenes mid-fellowship for five-days to reflect, recharge, reevaluate, and bond.
End of the Program
Scholars' Symposium
At the end of the Luce year, the cohort gathers again for the Scholars’ Symposium. This meeting allows Scholars to share their experiences and reflect on their time as Luce Scholars.
