Outings with Sierra Club Maui Hikes
For all of our outings, we ask for the following:
Register at
and provide a cell phone number where you can be reached at the start of the outing.
A donation
of $5 ($3 for Sierra Club members) is requested for all hikers over age 14 unless otherwise stated in a hike description or it is a service outing.
Bring lunch/snack, water, rain gear, sunscreen, and appropriate footwear. Hiking boots are recommended for longer hikes.
If the hike description states an EMI waiver is required:
East Maui Irrigation Company (EMI) allows access to their trails as long as each hiker has a waiver. An EMI waiver is absolutely required for EMI hikes (see
emi.html
) – you must email name, address and phone number to
jackie.thomas@mahipono.com
at least one week in advance. The waiver can be emailed to the hike leader in advance or brought on the hike and shown to the hike leader (on your phone or printed). A waiver is good for all EMI hikes in the same quarter.
Hike description key:
(C) conservation focus, such as discussing how to conserve this land for future generations to enjoy; (E) educational, such as visiting and learning about archeological sites and naming the plants and flowers; (S) service outing (no donation required), (D) round trip hike distance.
We always welcome more hike leaders! Send email to
info@mauisierraclub.org
if you are interested.

Kapalua Coastal Trail hike and farewell to our beautiful Kolea
(C/E)
West Maui, 3.5 miles
Meet in the D.T. Fleming Beach Parking Lot, left side, at 8am. We will walk along the coastal path, a combination of asphalt, gravel, and rocky trail. This should be a great opportunity to photograph our beautiful Kolea (Pacific Golden Plover) gathering on the grassy lawns in their elegant breeding plumage in preparation for their 3,000-mile en masse migration to their breeding grounds on the Arctic tundra. After a stop at Kapalua Bay for lunch and optional swim/snorkel, we will return to Fleming Beach. Although the footing can be rough in places, this is an easy three and a half mile RT hike. There are restrooms at each end of the walk. There will be an optional detour to Makaluapuna Point on the way back to see the jagged rock formation known as Dragon’s Teeth and to walk the labyrinth for those interested. Swimming and snorkeling are excellent at both DT Fleming Beach and Kapalua Bay, so bring appropriate gear if you wish. Snack/lunch on the beach at Kapalua Bay. Bring water and reef-safe sun protection. Leader Annie Schultz 808-344-6628.

Waihe‘e Ridge Trail hike
(C/E)
Waihe‘e, 5 miles
This is a moderate to strenuous hike, as it is uphill most of the way to the top, a 1600-foot elevation gain. This trail can be very slippery if there has been recent rainfall, so a hiking stick is important. There is a beautiful forest, and spectacular ocean and valley views. Meet at 8 AM at the upper parking lot: turn mauka (inland) at Circle M Ranch (mile marker 6.9 on Kahekili Highway) and drive .9 miles to upper parking lot. Leader: Annie Schultz

Olowalu Valley Hike
(C/E)
Olowalu, 5 miles
Meet at 7:30 AM in the park & ride parking lot at the north end of N. Kihei Road or at 8:00 AM in the dirt parking lot south of Leoda’s in Olowalu. We will carpool to the trailhead near the top of petroglyph hill. This is a mostly shady hike into lovely Olowalu Valley, following Olowalu Stream, with many stream crossings. It is a challenging hike due to stream crossings, sections of rocks to navigate, and a steep hillside climb. We will hike up the valley, along the stream, as far as the pig barrier that crosses the stream. The round-trip distance will be about 5 miles and will take about 6 hours. We will very likely hear, and possibly see, White-Rumped Shama and Red-Billed Leiothrix forest birds. This is a moderate to strenuous hike. Wear water shoes or shoes you don’t mind getting wet. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, mosquito repellant, snacks/lunch, and lots of water. Trekking poles are highly recommended. Leader Annie Schultz (
