I have actually tried to make a mosaic picture of humans before which shows different skin tones, ages, sexes, etc. because that would be a good representation of how humans look rather than choosing a single human image. Your point is a good one. —

My personal opinion is that it would be impossible to find a single phenotypic image for which all humans would agree upon to represent themselves as a species. Even the famous
Pioneer
plaques
sent to represent the human species to extraterrestrials had human genitalia censored by NASA. From a biotaxonomic perspective however, it is difficult to disagree with the historical contributions of Carl von Linné to the field, despite being a white (cishetero) European and perhaps not the best representative of human diversity. His spouse however would arguably make a better historical lectotype than him, since females are more common within the species. With female and male being the most common sexes present in the species, accounting for about 99% of the population, it would be good to have images of both Carl and Sara von Linné, and not the just the male of the couple.

Sure but having a variety of faces and body types would be even better, since humans have variation amongst them. I'm not sure how or why Linneaus' sexual orientation is relevant (in fact, how do you even know it...?) since that isn't something that is displayed in a picture, but many common differences in traits can be observed with a mosaic of images made up of many types of humans. —

(Typo for parenthetical subimportance corrected above.) I was just expressing the number of sociological privileges that von Linné enjoyed to enter such a prestigious position in the biological sciences. I agree that an image attempting to express human biogenetic diversity would be best, but I think it would be impossible to do practically. I think using the established human lectotype of von Linné is an acceptable compromise due to his historical importance to biological taxonomy. I am only arguing that an image of his spouse should also be added as a human paralectotype so that the numerical-majority female sex can be represented. Of course, sex and sexuality of historical figures is notoriously difficult to know. For all we know, one or both of the von Linnés could have been intersex, since human intersexuality was poorly understood at that time, particularly chromosomal science. All we know is that they were sexually compatible enough to successfully reproduce offspring.

Hi Justin. Your points on the pump are well meaning, but please look at his recent edits. He is once gain trying to impose his chosen formats onto WS as well as annoying PeterR sufficiently as to force him to move off our site. The trouble with Thorpe is that he treats WS as his chosen domain and to hell with the rest of us. Many of his edits in the last couple of days are both helpful and show a lack of knowledge. In addition, he is acting in a petty manner by refusing to listen to others and going along on his own sweet way, particularly when it comes to formats and ignoring consensus. As PeterR puts it he is not as good as he thinks he is and IMO he has made few original contributions in the last few years preferring to concentrate on categories and getting involved with the contributions of others! I also think he is perhaps trying to provoke edit wars. Do we need a checkuser ASAP?

Hi,
Please could you look at my suggestion

Uhm I see (
Pigsonthewing
too), so if needed you can fix/fork those messages by yourself since the rule is pretty straightforward. Basically in Italian adjectives and nouns of things/activities/almost-anything-but-proper-nouns are lower case. So you'll say "the species was firstly described by
oologist
oavf in
ctober 2016". By the way I'm using my stewards userrights to put translations directly into mediawiki's namespace avoiding bothering you with requests to move translations, I hope this is not a problem to local policies, otherwise I'll put them in talkpages. --

Hello, I reverted part of your edit in this template. In my opinion, it is better to have the distribution information only in a collapsible box. In cases like
Ochna
it would take too much space in the article. As there already have been some discussions, if distribution data should be included or not, it certainly is better to present it not too bulky. Regards --

Hello, and
Orchi
Franz Xaver
. I think your edits on this template need discussion. For example, I do not think that a collapse box approach reduces accessibility, but it does reduce the size of the taxon page making it more readable. However, I do not often use the template, so perhaps others should make there views known as well.

There are a mere total of 23 approved bots on Wikispecies, most of them inactive. As a comparison the English Wikipedia runs 312 bots, many of them

These were only redlinks and there is no greater categorization scheme of "
by country"--I don't know that we should have any but I think we should have a discussion about "by country" categories. For instance, we have deleted thousands of categories that are geographic for taxa but we have a few for taxon authorities by country. As I posted on your talk about a different template, if you are in favor of restoration, then I am happy to see you restore it (or do it myself if you'd prefer) and then we can discuss issues related to geography at the Pump. —

Referring to
earlier discussions
regarding a local Checkuser policy, I
herebye apply
to get
Checkuser
user rights, although we havnt reached a consensus reg Checkuser policy, but I want to give it a try if I can get the required votes. For a request to succeed a minimum of 25 support votes and an 80% positive vote are required (subject to the normal bureaucrat discretion). Requests for checkuser run for two weeks, and I ask kindly that somone starts the poll, like we do for adminship applications.
Please also note that CheckUser actions are logged, but for privacy reasons the logs are only visible to other Checkusers. Because of this,
Wikispecies must always have no fewer than two checkusers

RFC on Checkusers

With one week to go I wanted to remind everyone of the importance of voting on the current CheckUser applications. They can all be found together on a single RFC:
Wikispecies:Requests_for_Comment#Checkusers
It is extremely important with votes such as this for everyone to be involved. There are strict rules in the Wikimedia Foundation Policy guidelines on these votes. I would urge people to have a good understanding of what a CheckUser does. This can be read up on here on the page discussing CheckUser's
Wikispecies:Checkusers
. Links on this page will take you to other policy information on Meta, HowTo for our site etc.
I would also urge people to look at our own policy development and some past discussion on this can be found here:
Wikispecies_talk:Local_policies#Local_CU_Policy
Wikispecies has in the past had issues that has required the intervention that is supported by the ability to do a CheckUser. Many of us are aware of this. The capacity to do this ourselves greatly speeds up this process. Although SockPuppetry can sometimes be identified without using a CheckUser in order to do the necessary steps to stop it or even prevent it requires evidence. We all know that sockpupets can do significant damage.
This is an important step for Wikispecies. It is a clear demonstration we can run ourselves as a Wiki Project part of Wiki Media Foundation. When I and several others first discussed this we knew it would be difficult at the time to meet all the criteria. We have only now decided to try and get this feature included in Wikispecies. By doing this it can lead to other areas where Wikispecies can further develop its own policies. In some areas we have unique needs, different to the other Wiki's. It is timely we were able to develop all these policies.

How's your understanding of CSS? I have put

I have
imported several styles
from en.wp to
MediaWiki:Common.css
. The template that you imported uses several classes and I just copied the associated styling for all of those. It maybe/kinda/should work but since it's CSS and I'm doing it, I'm sure that it won't. At the
very least
the

float works for now... I can definitely keep at it if you want. I actually have some web design that I am doing at the moment, so it's nice to sort through these frustrations. —

Actually, that page is mostly made by hand, but you'll notice that the line "Editor" is all in blue for every language because
that
term didn't need to be translated here at Wikispecies. It is translated over at
translatewiki:
and is a part of the MediaWiki software itself. (You can see this for yourself if you use other languages that no one here has translated like, "
MediaWiki:Editor/br
", which is Breton.) If
MediaWiki:Editor/hu
is incorrect, then it's incorrect across all MediaWiki sites. Go ahead and check any random wiki like,
s:fr:MediaWiki:Editor/hu
(which is the French Wikisource). So I'm a little reluctant to change that one since it is so widely used all over MediaWiki. Does that explanation make sense? —

Not sure if you knew this but you can redirect templates so that {{A}} is made up of #redirect[[Template:B]] and every time that someone inserts {{A}} into a page, the content from {{B}} will display. If I see more redundant templates, then I will certainly try to merge them (and, of course, fixing the redirect links is better but not necessary). Thanks. —

In these matters I always opt for the "Global account information",
like this
. That instantly gives you all the current user group- and blocking data for
all

& Justin: This template also has a cousin named
{{

Wikispecies:Translation Administrators' Noticeboard

{{Dynamite}}

{{

Justin, something seems to have gone amiss when you added the
{{Anheader}}

adding spaces between initials in taxon authority names

Please
stop adding spaces between initials in taxon authority names. While this is a matter of personal style and preference (which I myself used to follow), the great majority of double initials
do not
have spaces between them. The style of
no space
between initials is used by numerous long-time editors and administrators and we all need to be following the same style format to avoid constant needless changes. Please check this random sample of such cases: D.P. Wooldridge, N.R. Campbell, Kaio C.C. Alevi, T.A. Al-Turki etc. all set up by administrators or long-term editors. If you disagree with my analysis of the situation, please present this for discussion in the Village Pump. If you agree with me, kindly undo your recent edits. Thanks and kind regards,

Hi Justin. We all of course know about the
Block log

Sort of a block log in reverse, if you see what I mean? If it can't be listed by the standard logs, perhaps this type of data could be extracted using some sort of wiki-voodoo in the Advanced Search function? –

How we will see unregistered users
edit
Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin
will still be able to access the IP
. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on
better tools
to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can
read more on Meta
. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can
to
the weekly technical newsletter
We have
two suggested ways
this identity could work.
We would appreciate your feedback
on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can
let us know on the talk page
. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you.

Wiki code in translations

Hi Justin. While doing some patrolling of the "Recent changes" earlier today I stumbled over
this edit
of a Chinese translation. I don't recall seeing anything like it earlier. I think that the two Chinese translations in the most recent edit are okay. If I'm correct they say 示例 → "Example" (as in "give typical example", "demonstrate") and 範例 → "example" (as in "exemplification"). However my question doesn't really involve the translation, but the wiki code. I don't think I've ever seen wiki code used in that way ever before, i.e.:
-{zh-hans:示例; zh-hant:範例;}-
Is it correct? Looks murky to me... I'm asking you since I know by experience that you're usually very apt in dealing with these kinds of oddities. All the best,

Error in ”Userdata” template

Hello Justin. Could you please have a look at
Template:Userdata
and try to figure out why blank spaces in user names must be replaced by underscores for the (last) "Global account information" link to work? If blank spaces are used instead of underscores only the first part of the user name is linked (eg. "Tommy" instead of "Tommy Kronkvist"). It's not the end of the world of course, but the "underscore workaround" may be hard for some users to figure out and the rendered result is ugly (in some browsers a few of the underscores are randomly bolded). See the collapsed section in the "Accounts under review" paragraph
in this diff
for an example. –

Thank you. AFAICT (having just tested by converting
{{

{{
Green & Parke, 1975

these steps need to be considered, and enacted where appropriate:
Sync with up-to-date versions of citation templates (from en.Wikipedia?)
import/ adapt or write documentation
consider version control or other issues around ongoing synchronisation
resolve non-working
|author-link1=
etc
add (or utilise)
|access=
, so we don't need to use separate
{{

}}
templates
create and utilise tracking categories for errors
make
{{
Cite Q
}}
compatible
notify template maintainers elsewhere (en.Wikipedia?)
lots more testing/ resolve any issues found
write-up explainer for existing and new Wikispecies editors
Anything else you can think of?
Note that

Malfunctioning talk page template

Hello Justin. Arriving 31 December 2025 you're eligible to join the
Wikispecies Twenty Year Society
, should you like to. Yesterday I created the "society's" main page as well as a category and user box to go with it. I also created
Template:Twenty Year Society invitation
, using
Template:Ten Year Society invitation
as a starting point (or perhaps
Template:Fifteen Year Society invitation
, I don't really remember and they're all very similar.)
As I guess you know, all of those three "invitational" templates are supposed to be used on a user's talk page, adding a new thread welcoming the user to the respective group. However, there's something amiss with all of them… As with any new message, adding those templates to a user talk page also adds an "Edit" link next to the new thread's heading. Here's the tricky part: clicking that link doesn't give the opportunity to reply on that same user talk page, instead it open's up an edit window on the
template
page, e.g. this:
What's up with
that?
You can use for example
User talk:MPF#Invitation to join the Twenty Year Society
as a "live" example to replicate the error.

Yes of course, the subst'ing should have been obvious to me. As you've seen I've added code examples to the template documentation, for those users who might not know what template substitution is. Nice touch of you to add the note about signing them!
I've now subst'ed the "20 year" template on the three other user talk pages I've added it to, in the same way as you did on MPF's talk page. So case closed, I guess. As always: thank you for your swift response. It's much appreciated. –

Ahh, that makes sense, so this is cleaning up maintenance reports you're doing. I ask because I wonder if anyone will know (or want) to actually maintain these or not, and
Botanists

Entomologists

massive
because of the huge lists of people in those categories. Are these lists temporary for cleaning out the reports then, or are they meant to be here to stay in some form?
I also noticed you've been adjusting categories in taxon author pages, at least from what I could tell from my Watchlist. Beware that sometimes seemingly redundant higher categories (e.g. zoologists, entomologists, botanists) may have been there to cover subfields that don't have their own categories on Wikispecies. (At least, I think this what
RLJ was talking about at Village Pump recently??
The idea being that some botanists have multiple specialities within botany including vascular plants, but vascular plant specialists don't have a category, if I understand him correctly?)
Also to warn you, a number of people with pages on Wikispecies are also not really taxon authors or even taxonomists and probably don't even really need a Wikispecies page if I'm being frank (others may disagree with me). Some Wikispecies editors seem to regularly create these pages even if their subjects' research has nothing to do with taxonomy or biological nomenclature or even biology at all... In any case, I don't think these pages belong in
Category:Taxon authorities
and I've removed them from there when I spot this. (Such as a few of the ones you edited recently e.g.
Alfredo O. Barrera-Guzmán
Matthew D. Shawkey
and
Jason T. Weir
, which is why I bring this up)
As an aside, since you're doing maintenance of people pages, I compiled some search queries on those lines a while back for my own purposes (mainly searching for categories or lack of in combination with templates, based on problematic types of taxon author pages I've encountered frequently), but I wonder if you would find them useful? If so, I listed them
here
on my userpage.
(Forgive me for the wall of text, I was doing taxon author page cleanup manually on and off for ages and felt I had a lot of comments to give based on what I was seeing of your work; I appreciate that you're doing the work!)

I think that ideally, these are broken up into navigable pages and maintained by a bot, similar to
ISSN
. In the immediate term, I can't do that or resolve that, but I think that would be a solution to make these reports actually useful in the future, just like how I added
Category:Pages with taxonavigation templates
to this wiki in order to clear out hundreds of thousands of uncategorized pages. Once these reports are no longer flooded with pages, it can become useful to actually refer to them for regular maintenance.
Re:
Category:Taxon authorities
, I do appreciate the heads up and have made it a point to not indiscriminately add every biographical entry to it. For what it's worth, note that (e.g.) I was just
restoring something that someone else had added
. I do try to be conservative about not adding information where I don't know, but I also do make mistakes, so I'm always open to the criticism and appreciate the warning.
Thanks for the heads up on the maintenance you've done. I'll see if I can build off of it. —

Yeah, a bot-maintained list does sound like it would be more ideal. If you know how to write SPARQL queries and we base occupations on Wikidata, I don't think it should be super hard to set up similar Wikidata lists to the one at
ISSN
. Unfortunately from my recollection though, the Wikidata item occupations also don't always match the Wikispecies occupation categories.
Re: Category:Taxon authorities, yeah that's fair that you were just restoring the category (I see that you removed it by mistake I take it?). I just happened to see that particular change, and saw there was no taxa authored template but also saw no listed publication describing new taxa. So, I double checked the author's publication list via his Google Scholar and ResearchGate profiles and concluded he was not actually a taxon author, since none of his authored works describe new taxa. That's the kind of method I usually do for finding out if someone is a taxon author or not.

I did remove it by accident, so yes, I just restored it in that instance. This is some good stuff to add to
Wikispecies:Done and to do

This subfamily does not actually exist that is why I removed it. I assumed in good faith that somebody was using the edit as a test, which would have been better in the Sandbox.

Hi, yesterday I started to test a filter towards IPs who made stuff as
, the filter matched but the IP operator is smart and my filter was simple, so they bypassed the filter after 17 attempts, see
. The extension Abusefilter has the possibility not only to prevent from editing but also to manage blocks, but I don't see options to manage blocks, do you know if this option is enabled on Wikispecies, and otherwise how to enable it?

I confirm this feature exist but is not enabled in Wikispecies, I checked randomly filters in Wikidata, e.g.
[1]
, in the section "Actions to take when matched" there is indeed an option "Block the user and/or IP address from editing" which would be very useful for this precise case, because even if the vandal is able to changes their IPs, this would greatly complicate his task. By the way this night they did it again but because of a high rate of matches the filter automatically disabled because of the option "Block autopromote", which I suppose is actually of no interest because the vandal is an IP so I remove it.

As usual,
another vandalism

hi, I ping you as you are interface administrator. Do you know how to enable the block option of the
Abuse Filter
? The filter (7) I created complicates their task but the if they were blocked each time they match the filter (56 times in 2 days) this would complicate things even more for them. Although I know they can change IP, making their task more difficult seems like a good idea.

Hi,
Christian Ferrer
. Enabling the AbuseFilter block option would definitely require community consensus, but I can start a discussion at the
Village Pump
about it.

Are you trying to block a certain action from happening or block a user on the wiki from making any edits (or block a user from a given page or namespace, etc.)? —

Hello, Justin. Due to a bug regarding
global filter 328
phab:T380870
), for now this project should retain filter 6. However, in addition to that, I would suggest updating the filter to include additional languages considered unnecessary.
page_namespace
==
1198
action
==
"edit"
"autopatrol"
in
user_rights
equals_to_any
translate_target_language
"en-ca"
"en-gb"
"es-419"
"es-formal"
"simple"
"zh-hans"
"zh-hant"
You might also want to switch from
warn and disallow
to only
disallow
, because custom messages can be used when disallowing. Thanks.
