All aboard Weardale Railway for a journey through Weardale, a National Landscape.
Weardale Railway is an 18-mile heritage line connecting the historic market towns of Bishop Auckland, Wolsingham and Stanhope.
The railway is part of the Stockton to Darlington line, (famous for having the first passenger rail service in the world) which will celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2025. In years past, the railway dominated a large part of Bishop Auckland and served as a testament to the importance of the town on the wider area and indeed, the country as a whole.
In April 2023, we reopened the 16 mile stretch between Stanhope and Bishop Auckland, to connect communities in the dales with Bishop Auckland and create a popular destination for tourists. The Auckland Project and the Weardale Railway Trust will continue to work with the local community and other stakeholders to develop the railway.
