Higher Education
Since its founding 200 years ago, Widener University has evolved and adapted to the times and needs of its students. From its evolution as a school for boys, to a military institution, and currently as an agile, multi-campus teaching and research university; Widener continues to distinguish itself as a model and pacesetter. The University’s mission is to empower its community of learners to discover and create better futures. The University hosts a diverse population of nearly 6,000 students. 37% percent of the students identify with a race other than White/Caucasian. While students come from all across the country, and world, a vast majority are from the mid-Atlantic region. 79% of Widener undergraduate students engage in service or civic engagement, which is 27% higher than the national average. Widener offers degrees in business administration, education, engineering, humanities, human sexuality studies, law, nursing, physical therapy, clinical psychology, sciences, social scienc

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Agility Experienced: the implementation of a university-wide commitment to anticipate and adapt successfully and rapidly to change.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
The Agility Experienced strategy was developed through an innovative process grounded in creative studies, design thinking, and research on organizational innovation, with close attention to internal and external data. With members of our Strategy Core Team, we intentionally and carefully developed this process to improve upon traditional strategic planning approaches and outcomes and to serve the university in a time of rapid change and intense competition in higher education. We were determined not just to stay in the game, but to win and to thrive in an uncertain and volatile future. And, we were determined to develop a long-term strategy that would evolve with the context while remaining true to the fundamental principle. Rather than a plan on a shelf, it is a living strategy.
An important aspect of the process was the use of narrative, graphic, and audio-recorded scenarios to envision various proposed strategies in action. The strategy development process itself and the use of creative scenarios to paint various pictures of the university’s future has become a model for other institutions and has been shared informally and formally in national and local presentations. It has also resulted in the formation of Widener’s Strategy to Action Team focused on process improvement and implementing projects that help the university to win in a competitive higher education environment.
