The Call for Feedback: Board of Trustees elections is now open and will close on
16 February 2022.
With this Call for Feedback, the Movement Strategy and Governance team is taking a different approach. This approach incorporates community feedback from 2021. Instead of leading with proposals, the Call is framed around key questions from the Board of Trustees. The key questions came from the feedback about the 2021 Board of Trustees election. The intention is to inspire collective conversation and collaborative proposal development about these key questions.

Question about the Affiliates' role for the Call for Feedback: Board of Trustees elections
edit
You can find this message translated into additional languages on Meta-wiki.
More languages
Please help translate to your language
Hi All,
Thank you to everyone who participated in the
Call for Feedback: Board of Trustees elections
so far. The Movement Strategy and Governance team has announced the last key question:
How should affiliates participate in elections?
Affiliates are an important part of the Wikimedia movement. Two seats of the Board of Trustees due to be filled this year were filled in 2019 through the Affiliate-selected Board seats process. A change in the
Bylaws removed the distinction between community and affiliate seats
. This leaves the important question: How should affiliates be involved in the selection of new seats?
The question is broad in the sense that the answers may refer not just to the two seats mentioned, but also to other, Community- and Affiliate-selected seats. The Board is hoping to find an approach that will both engage the affiliates and give them actual agency, and also optimize the outcomes in terms of selecting people with top skills, experience, diversity, and wide community’s support.
The Board of Trustees is seeking feedback about this question especially, although not solely, from the affiliate community. Everyone is invited to share proposals and join the conversation in the Call for Feedback channels. In addition to collecting online feedback, the Movement Strategy and Governance team will organize several video calls with affiliate members to collect feedback. These calls will be at different times and include Trustees.
Due to the late addition of this third question, the Call will be extended until 16 February.
Join the conversation.
Best regards,
Movement Strategy and Governance

Desktop Improvements update and Office Hours invitation
edit
Hello. I wanted to give you an update about the
Desktop Improvements
project, which the Wikimedia Foundation Web team has been working on for the past few years.
The goals of the project are to make the interface more welcoming and comfortable for readers and useful for advanced users. The project consists of a series of feature improvements which make it easier to read and learn, navigate within the page, search, switch between languages, use article tabs and the user menu, and more.
The improvements are already visible by default for readers and editors on 24 wikis, including Wikipedias in
French
Portuguese
, and
Persian
The changes apply to the
Vector
skin only.
Monobook
or
Timeless
users are not affected.
Features deployed since our last update
edit
User menu
- focused on making the navigation more intuitive by visually highlighting the structure of user links and their purpose.
Sticky header
- focused on allowing access to important functionality (logging in/out, history, talk pages, etc.) without requiring people to scroll to the top of the page.
For a full list of the features the project includes, please visit our
project page
. We also invite you to our
Updates page
The features deployed already and the table of contents that's currently under development
How to enable the improvements
edit
Global preferences
It is possible to opt-in individually
in the appearance tab within the preferences
by unchecking the "Use Legacy Vector" box. (It has to be empty.) Also, it is possible to opt-in on all wikis using the
global preferences
If you think this would be good as a default for all readers and editors of this wiki, feel free to start a conversation with the community and contact me.
On wikis where the changes are visible by default for all, logged-in users can always opt-out to the Legacy Vector. There is an easily accessible link in the sidebar of the new Vector.

Update on Universal Code of Conduct Enforcement guidelines ratification vote
edit
Hi all,
With about 2 days left in the poll, I can share that there are 1600 voters as of 18 March 23:20 UTC.
Being aware that homewiki isn't always indicative of where an editor is active, I would still like to remind everyone that diversity matters and that local opinions are sought in this global decision. It would be beneficial to see the comments about the Enforcement Guidelines given from the perspective of this project, even if wikisource is not your your homewiki.
You can access the voting page locally on
You can look at the votership numbers on

Reverting import is virtually impossible, as you have to find all the specific revisions imported and then delete those specific ones (sometimes, they are all the newest ones, sometimes not). Just rollbacking the template isn't enough. —

UCoC Enforcement Guidelines - Voting results
edit
Hi all!
I want to inform you that the majority of Wikimedians have voted in favour of the proposed Guidelines for implementing the Universal Code of Conduct.
A total of 2348 community members took part in the vote.
Of that number, 1338 voted Yes and 945 No. There were 65 undecided votes.
What does this result mean?
It means that there is enough support for the WMF Board of Trustees to review the Guidelines. It does not mean that the ratification process is complete.
What happens next?
1. The UCoC project team will collate and summarise the comments provided in the voting process and publish them on Meta-wiki;
2. The Board of Trustees will review the text of the Guidelines and comments given during the vote to determine if any aspects need to be revised.
What are the possible outcomes?
1. If the Board of Trustees concludes that there are aspects of the Guidelines that need further refinement, these comments, as well as suggestions from the community discussions, will provide a good starting point for the revision.
2. If the Board of Trustees decides to proceed with ratification, the UCoC project team will begin supporting specific proposals in the Guidelines.
You can find more details about the results and the accompanying statistics
on this page
. A summary of the voters' comments will be available on the same page.
Kind regards,

Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees election 2022 Call for Candidates
edit
It's the election season again!
This year, the Wikimedia community has the opportunity to vote for two community-and-affiliate selected seats in the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees, which oversees the Foundation's operations. Community-and-affiliate selected trustees and Board-appointed trustees make up the Board of Trustees. Each trustee serves a three-year term. This is an opportunity to improve the representation, diversity, and expertise of the Board as a team.
Please consider
submitting your candidacy
to join the Board of Trustees.
(Read the full announcement of the Elections Committee and the Board of Trustees)
The seats to be filled this year were previously selected by affiliates in the
2019 affiliate-selected Board seats process
This year, a different method will be used:
Candidates submit their applications (by May 9; this deadline may be slightly extended);
Any community member can become a candidate if they meet the
general and special conditions outlined here
Affiliates vote to shortlist six (6) names from the candidates' pool.
Each affiliate carries one vote. The affiliate vote is scheduled to take place in early July.
The Community votes to elect two of the six shortlisted candidates.
Community Voting is scheduled to begin on August 15 and end on August 29.
The Board will appoint the two newly-elected candidates as the new Trustees.
This final step, which will conclude the election process, is expected to take place in early October 2022.
Election Volunteers:
Do you want to take part in the process as an election volunteer? Just add your name
on this Meta page
If you have any questions, please post them here, on Meta-wiki, or reach out to me directly.
Kind regards.

How to start a Santali language test Wikisource project
edit
Hi, Myself Prasanta. I mostly remain active in
Santali Wikipedia
. Many of my friends have collected some Santali books written in Ol Chiki script
Ashwani collection
, which they have dedicated to various cc licenses. I was thinking of adding them to Wikisource. Because these books are in different language I cannot add it to other languages. Can anyone guide me how to start a test Wikisource for Santali language. Thanks

: Unlike all of the other sister projects, there is no language committee approval to start an edition of Wikisource: you can begin adding texts here immediately as long as they fit our scope and are appropriately licensed. It's great if you have more editors and make a main page in that language, etc. as well. —

: Just put the language prefix in front of the page name. OL will link here to mulWS, which will then redirect to enWS, without needing an on-wiki redirect page. But note that OL is badly neglected by the IA, and their interest is more with getting us to link to them than the other way around.

Desktop Improvements update
edit
Making this the new default
Hello. I wanted to give you an update about the
Desktop Improvements
project, which the Wikimedia Foundation Web team has been working on for the past few years. Our work is almost finished! 🎉
We would love to see these improvements become the default for readers and editors across all wikis.
In the coming weeks, we will begin conversations on more wikis, including yours. 🗓️
We will gladly read your suggestions!
The goals of the project are to make the interface more welcoming and comfortable for readers and useful for advanced users. The project consists of a series of feature improvements which make it easier to read and learn, navigate within the page, search, switch between languages, use article tabs and the user menu, and more. The improvements are already visible by default for readers and editors on more than 30 wikis, including Wikipedias in
French
Portuguese
, and
Persian
The changes apply to the
Vector
skin only, although it will always be possible to revert to the previous version on an individual basis.
Monobook
or
Timeless
users will not notice any changes.
The newest features
Table of contents
- our version is easier to reach, gain context of the page, and navigate throughout the page without needing to scroll. It is currently tested across our pilot wikis. It is also available for editors who have opted into the Vector 2022 skin.
Page tools
- now, there are two types of links in the sidebar. There are actions and tools for individual pages (like
Related changes
) and links of the wiki-wide nature (like
Recent changes
). We are going to separate these into two intuitive menus.
How to enable/disable the improvements
Global preferences
It is possible to opt-in individually
in the appearance tab within the preferences
by selecting "Vector (2022)". Also, it is possible to opt-in on all wikis using the
global preferences
On wikis where the changes are visible by default for all, logged-in users can always opt-out to the Legacy Vector. There is an easily accessible link in the sidebar of the new Vector.

Board of Trustees election 2022 -- Election Compass
edit
Hi all,
The 2022
Board of Trustees elections
are from 16 August 2022 to 30 August 2022.
Members of the Wikimedia community have the opportunity to elect two candidates to a three-year term.
To make the election process more straightforward and to help the community members make informed decisions about candidates they want to support, we have prepared a tool called
Election Compass
How does the Election Compass work?
The Election Compass is a tool to help voters select the candidates that best align with their beliefs and views. The community members will
propose statements
for the candidates to answer using a Lickert scale (agree/neutral/disagree). The candidates’ answers to the statements will be loaded into the Election Compass tool. Voters will use the tool by entering their answers to the statements (agree/neutral/disagree). The results will show the candidates that best align with the voter’s beliefs and views.
Here is the timeline for the Election Compass:
July 8 - 20: Community members propose statements for the Election Compass
July 21 - 22: Elections Committee reviews statements for clarity and removes off-topic statements
July 25 - August 3: Volunteers vote on the statements
August 4: Elections Committee selects the top 15 statements
August 5 - 12: candidates align themselves with the statements
August 16: The Election Compass opens for voters to use to help guide their voting decision
Thank you!

www.wikinews.org
www.wikiversity.org
, and
www.wikivoyage.org
portal pages now use an automated update system.
[138]
Changes later this week
The
new version
of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 15 November. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 16 November. It will be on all wikis from 17 November (
calendar
).
There will be a new link to directly "Edit template data" on Template pages.
[139]
Future changes
Wikis where mobile
DiscussionTools
are enabled (
these ones
) will soon use full CSS styling to display any templates that are placed at the top of talk pages. To adapt these “talk page boxes” for narrow mobile devices you can use media queries, such as in
this example
[140]
Starting in January 2023,
Community Tech
will be
running the Community Wishlist Survey (CWS) every two years
. This means that in 2024, there will be no new proposals or voting.

Transwiki import fra enWS:
De Indis De Jure Belli
edit
Recently the subject of
a copyright discussion
at enWS that concluded it is PD both at home and abroad. But the work is out of scope on enWS due to long swathes of non-English text (Latin and French at least). As best I can tell it should be in scope for mulWS, so… Anybody up for importing it here?

The Wikisources use a tool called ProofreadPage. ProofreadPage uses OpenSeadragon which is an open source tool. The OpenSeadragon JavaScript API has been significantly re-written to support dynamically loading images. The functionality provided by the older version of the API should still work but it is no longer supported. User scripts and gadgets should migrate over to the newer version of the API. The functionality provided by the newer version of the API is
documented on MediaWiki

edit
Please help translate to your language
(There is
a translatable version of this message on MetaWiki
Hello
The
Community Wishlist Survey (CWS) 2023
, which lets contributors propose and vote for tools and improvements, starts next month on Monday,
23 January 2023, at 18:00 UTC
and will continue annually.
We are inviting you to share your ideas for technical improvements to our tools and platforms. Long experience in editing or technical skills is not required. If you have ever used our software and thought of an idea to improve it, this is the place to come share those ideas!
The dates for the phases of the Survey will be as follows:
Phase 1: Submit, discuss, and revise proposals – Monday, Jan 23, 2023 to Sunday, Feb 6, 2023
Phase 2: WMF/Community Tech reviews and organizes proposals – Monday, Jan 30, 2023 to Friday, Feb 10, 2023
Phase 3: Vote on proposals – Friday, Feb 10, 2023 to Friday, Feb 24, 2023
Phase 4: Results posted – Tuesday, Feb 28, 2023
If you want to start writing out your ideas ahead of the Survey, you can start thinking about your proposals and draft them in
the CWS sandbox
We are grateful to all who participated last year. See you in January 2023!
Thank you!
Community Tech,

edit
Please help translate to your language
Voting in the Wikimedia sound logo contest
has started
. From December 6 to 19, 2022, please play a part and help chose the sound that will identify Wikimedia content on audio devices.
Learn more on Diff
The sound logo team is grateful to everyone who participated in this global contest. We received 3,235 submissions from 2,094 participants in 135 countries. We are incredibly grateful to the team of
volunteer screeners
and the
selection committee
who, among others, helped bring us to where we are today. It is now up to Wikimedia to choose the Sound Of All Human Knowledge.

the next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 9 January 2023.
Recent changes
On a user's contributions page, you can filter it for edits with a tag like 'reverted'. Now, you can also filter for all edits that are not tagged like that. This was part of a Community Wishlist 2022 request.
[152]
A new function has been used for gadget developers to add content underneath the title on article pages. This is considered a stable API that should work across all skins.
Documentation is available
[153]
One of our test wikis
is now being served from a new infrastructure powered by
Kubernetes
). More Wikis will switch to this new infrastructure in early 2023. Please test and let us know of any issues.
[154]
Problems
Last week, all wikis had no edit access for 9 minutes. This was caused by a database problem.
[155]
Changes later this week
There is no new MediaWiki version this week or next week.
The word "Reply" is very short in some languages, such as Arabic ("
ردّ
"). This makes the Discussion tools button on talk pages difficult to use. An arrow icon will be added to those languages. This will only be visible to editors who have the
Beta Feature
turned on.
[156]
[157]
Future changes
Edits can be automatically "tagged" by the system software or the Abuse filter management system. Those tags link to a help page about the tags. Soon they will also link to Recent Changes to let you see other edits tagged this way. This was a Community Wishlist 2022 request.
[158]
The Trust & Safety tools team
have shared new plans
for building the Private Incident Reporting System. The system will make it easier for editors to ask for help if they are harassed or abused.
Realtime Preview for Wikitext
is coming out of beta as an enabled feature for every user of the 2010 Wikitext
editor
in the week of January 9, 2023. It will be available to use via the toolbar in the 2010 Wikitext editor. The feature was the 4th most popular wish of the Community Wishlist Survey 2021.
Events
You can now
register for the Wikimedia Hackathon 2023
, taking place on May 19–21 in Athens, Greece. You can also apply for a scholarship until January 14th.
