Hi! Danish Wikisource is a bit dead so I ask here. I have been uploading files to Commons and been adding indexes to Wikisource and it all worked fine. But when I uploaded c:Category:Folkekalender for Danmark there have been many problems with thumbs and "Failed to initialize OpenSeadragon, no image found." on Danish Wikisource (the page files). The indexes can be seen in da:Kategori:Folkekalender for Danmark. What really frustrates me is that sometimes thumbs and pages work and later they do not work and the other way around. Right now File:Folkekalender for Danmark 1853.pdf seems to be okay on Commons but not on Danish Wikisource. Opposite with c:File:Folkekalender for Danmark 1862.pdf that does not seem to work on Commons but works fine on Danish Wikisource. The "fun" part is that File:Folkekalender for Danmark 1862.pdf seems to work on Wikisource. Are there any known issues? And does anyone have any ideas how to fix this? I tried to purge files on Commons and that made some work - at least for a while. MGA73 (talk) 18:58, 25 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

@MGA73: Did you try to purge the files? I have had this issue last week, and it was usually fixed by purging the files. In the case of very big files, uploading a dummy PDF and then reverting to the original was needed. The issue seems to have disappeared yesterday, and I have no idea why. It worked for c:File:Folkekalender for Danmark 1862.pdf. Regards, Yann (talk) 22:59, 25 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Yann: yes I did purge... more than once. The dummy-and-revert trick is interessting. Because it indicates that it is not the file that is the issue but something else. I also tried to delete and restore and that did not work. But I'm happy to know it is not just those files because my thought was that it was the OCR/text in the pdf-files that was the problem. I know now that it is something else so there is no point removing that. --MGA73 (talk) 06:07, 26 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Yann: I tried with c:File:Folkekalender for Danmark 1875.pdf and it did not work. Did you do anything between the upload and the revert? --MGA73 (talk) 15:32, 27 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
@MGA73: No, nothing special. That's weird. It has worked in all cases for me. Also I only have problems with big PDF files (> 200 MB). Yann (talk) 17:42, 27 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Yann: thank you. Anyway the file seems to work now. Knock wood, fingers crossed, kiss a frog or whatever needs to be said/done not to jinx anything. --MGA73 (talk) 11:55, 29 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
This may require a ticket at phab: if there is actually a problem with the extension or the wiki. Maybe the version if MediaWiki is out of date? —Justin (koavf)TCM 23:01, 30 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes a ticket is the right way and there is this one phab:T420341. It was "hidden" in the link above. --MGA73 (talk) 07:51, 31 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Yann:! I just noticed that c:File:Folkekalender for Danmark 1862.pdf seems to be broken again. It is really strange. We both saw that it was working. --MGA73 (talk) 18:21, 30 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

@MGA73: Yes, really weird, specially because [1] is OK. Yann (talk) 18:43, 30 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I just made a spate of edits and did several purges that did nothing. Maybe removing the first page would do something...? That would be a pain for the scan, but I guess that there could be some weird formatting issue with this inserted page??? Justin (koavf)TCM 23:01, 30 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Koavf: I converted page 1 into an image and uploaded a new version of the file. So far it seems to work but I have seen it work before and suddenly it stops working. But if it also works for you and still works tomorrow the solution could be to replace page 1 with an image. Thanks for the suggestion. --MGA73 (talk) 08:14, 31 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
If I had a good idea, no one will be more shocked than me. This still seems phab:-worthy, for what it's worth. —Justin (koavf)TCM 08:41, 31 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

@MGA73, @Yann, @Koavf: Update: The related ticket is task T420341. As it was neglected for many weeks, I've raised the matter on Commons yesterday to get the attention from technical users. Hopefully they'll figure out the problems.廣九直通車 (talk) 12:59, 9 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

The “article” starting on Page:Philological Museum v2.djvu/118 consists of a paragraph of English-language text, followed by several pages of Greek with English footnotes. How much of the Greek should be transcribed? TE(æ)A,ea. (talk) 23:08, 28 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Imo all. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 23:24, 28 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • Here I am much more hesitant, but I incline to agree with its inclusion too. It is not a separate non-English article unrelated to the rest of the book, it is a chapter that is an integral part of the book and leaving it out would make harm to the work (the book). --Jan Kameníček (talk) 08:16, 29 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes, please. For smaller, inline elements (e.g. a word or phrase), use {{lang|el|[TEXT]}} or {{lang|grc|[TEXT]}} if it's Ancient Greek. For longer passages, you will probably have to insert HTML directly, such as <div lang="el"> or <p lang="el">. If that's confusing or you need help, please let me know and I can assist. —Justin (koavf)TCM 23:04, 30 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
For longer passages, we have {{Greek block}}. --EncycloPetey (talk) 02:39, 31 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
This is a bit of a tangent, so I didn't want to distract from the semantics issue I mentioned above: if you have a text which is generally multilingual, it is appropriate to host it at mul:. —Justin (koavf)TCM 23:05, 30 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Currently, this versions page is for translations of the Homer work by Felicia Hemans. I want to include the Bocock translation, at Book Treasures of Mæcenas/To the Bandusian Fountain, here as well. Should the versions page be moved, to then allow a new versions page for just those translations? Nighfidelity (talk) 14:19, 31 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Expand the purpose of this page to include all translations. So, put the Hemans translations in a section on the page and add the Bocock translation in a separate section. Blank the translator field in the header. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 20:08, 31 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Ok. Nighfidelity (talk) 20:09, 31 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Shouldn't it be a translations page ? -- Beardo (talk) 20:31, 31 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Oops. Nighfidelity (talk) 20:31, 31 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Is it possible to create an inline link to this French Wikisource text? https://fr.wikisource.org/wiki/Odes_et_Ballades/La_Mort_de_Mademoiselle_de_Sombreuil

Specifically, I want to create the link on English Wikipedia. I know how to link just to Odes et Ballades, but is it possible to link to the specific poem in that collection? Thank you for your help! Chao Garden (talk) 02:38, 1 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Yes, just use the full link before the pipe ( | ), like this:
[[s:fr:Odes et Ballades/La Mort de Mademoiselle de Sombreuil|La Mort de Mademoiselle de Sombreuil]]
to get
La Mort de Mademoiselle de Sombreuil
--EncycloPetey (talk) 02:54, 1 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Awesome, thank you! Chao Garden (talk) 03:54, 1 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

See Page:Murder on the Palisades (1930).pdf/245 and Page:Murder on the Palisades (1930).pdf/246 for what I'm talking about. Nighfidelity (talk) 15:38, 7 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

You just need a name on the first reference tag, with a follow on the second, and {{pbr}} to create "paragraph breaks". --EncycloPetey (talk) 15:44, 7 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Here on cityonfire.com four chapters of the book titled "Game Over!" have been published, can I copy these four chapters here on Wikisource? MarioeMary (talk) 14:54, 8 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Has it been released in the public domain or a Creative Commons license? If so, is it proper published (not self-published or released a vanity press)? Nighfidelity (talk) 15:12, 8 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
No, the book hasn't been published anymore. To this day, only these four chapters remain. MarioeMary (talk) 15:37, 8 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, but they can't be copied here per WS:WWI. Nighfidelity (talk) 15:39, 8 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
ok, thank MarioeMary (talk) 17:55, 8 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

I’m having a similar problem (but not exactly identical) to the ones which have been plaguing us lately. The image window is too short for the image, so text gets cut off at the bottom. The image is at the right resolution, so there’s no squishing. Also, scrolling reveals the whole image, so the image isn’t cut off. But no amount of resizing solves the issue, and neither does purging the file cache, which fixes the image-cut-off issue. I think this could be fixed if the automatic image resizing “feature” is disabled. Is it possible to do that (at least for my own editing)? TE(æ)A,ea. (talk) 23:28, 8 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Can anyone fix these two transclusions? The pages in the scanned document are in the wrong order (seems to be an error in the document, not mis-assembly of page scans) so I've used the alternative method of transclusion given on the transclusion help page. However, these two songs are split across a page, but the details for transcluding a named section don't seem to produce the correct result. Chrisguise (talk) 23:00, 16 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Chrisguise It looks like @ShakespeareFan00 fixed it. Regards, TeysaKarlov (talk) 21:30, 18 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Looking at what's changed, I was obviously being a dumb ass in terms of understanding what the 'help' information was saying. Chrisguise (talk) 05:28, 19 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Is there a way to fully export a Hathitrust scan with non-copyright restrictions without having to do every page? This scan is what I'm talking about. Nighfidelity (talk) 02:27, 19 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

You can use Internet Archive Downloader, which is a browser plugin supported by Firefox and Edge and probably Chrome. That'll give you a button. I'll upload this for you; you can always just ask.--Prosfilaes (talk) 05:56, 19 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
It's at File:I am Jonathan Scrivener by Claude Houghton.pdf. I used "ocrmypdf --optimize 3 --clean --skip-text" to losslessly compress it to a useful size.--Prosfilaes (talk) 06:32, 19 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Could you also do it for Death Points a Finger if you have time? Nighfidelity (talk) 17:06, 24 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Nighfidelity: It will be at File:Levinrew - Death Points a Finger.pdf shortly, but are you sure it is already in the public domain? There is a copyright notice, so unless the copyright was not renewed, it will have to wait for a few years. Yann (talk) 10:18, 25 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I couldn't find any renewals here, nor could I find any renewals from anyone named Will Levinrew here (the alias that Levine used) Nighfidelity (talk) 13:56, 25 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Tangential note: I'm now seeing instances where Hathi blocks view of further pages after I look at some number from a single work. This happens even when the volume is no longer under copyright, and for which I am able to view ~100 pages before access is lost. Once access is lost to a volume, I cannot return to previously viewed pages without clearing cookies. --EncycloPetey (talk) 18:36, 19 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi folks. I'm an experienced Wikipedian, and a newbie Wikisourcer. I'd like to get more involved here but I find the formatting a bit daunting. I took a shot at helping out at Irish Poems, one of the monthly challenges, and I think I'm doing alright but I probably messed up the ppoem formatting. I would appreciate it if someone could go over a handful of the pages I created and adjust the formatting so I can learn by example. I'm trying not to leave a big mess for someone else to clean up later. Thanks a lot, MediaKyle (talk) 18:31, 19 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

It would be more helpful to have specific examples of pages where you need assistance. Poems are among the more complex formatting done here. --EncycloPetey (talk) 18:33, 19 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Looks mostly fine to me. One note: to put a whole stanza in italic, you can put {it} on its own line before. See Help:Poetry for details. Feel free to ask if you've got any questions. — Alien  3

Thank you. I'm having a bit of a hard time wrapping my head around setting the page breaks, but a couple people made some edits since I posted here and I think I have an idea what to do next. Appreciate it, MediaKyle (talk) 19:50, 19 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
@MediaKyle Another small comment. On pages like this: Page:Irish poems (IA irishpoems00stririch).pdf/66 or this: Page:Irish poems (IA irishpoems00stririch).pdf/74, you have added indents to the second halves of each line. Usually, each capitalised line of the poem would be its own line, and anything that looks like a new line solely because of the finite page width of the printed text would have the line break removed, and would be connected to the previous line (e.g. as was done here: Page:Irish poems (IA irishpoems00stririch).pdf/24). As above, if you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Regards, TeysaKarlov (talk) 20:49, 19 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
+1 to that. I'll also note that {{ppoem}} takes care of the hanging indent when the screen width forces the line to be wrapped. — Alien  3

Also, there is some special punctuation on Page:Irish poems (IA irishpoems00stririch).pdf/67, where an apostrophe comes immediately after a double quote, with less than a full space between. We have templates like {{" '}} for those situations. --EncycloPetey (talk) 21:42, 19 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks a lot for your help everyone. I think I've resolved all of the formatting errors I made when creating the pages, starting to get the hang of things now. Cheers, MediaKyle (talk) 21:55, 19 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Why are the images at an irregular size? Nighfidelity (talk) 15:03, 20 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

The scanned images are slightly different sizes. I tried setting the height instead of width for each, but it's still not right. I'm going to try to merge the images so they can transclude as a single image.—Tcr25 (talk) 15:36, 20 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

I have a situation I'm not sure how to deal with at Index:Indian Earth.djvu. Essentially, that book uses double-struck letters (or something that looks like it) for dropped initials (for instance see Page:Indian Earth.djvu/58), which

  • are available in unicode, eg 𝔸 U+1D538 MATHEMATICAL DOUBLE-STRUCK CAPITAL A
  • are available through the math extension, eg <math>\mathbb A</math> which gives A {\displaystyle \mathbb {A} } {\displaystyle \mathbb {A} }, which is in fact the same output as using the unicode character directly (at least if using the default math renderer)

So theoretically we can reproduce these. My question is then, should we? (Not talking about maths texts, but contexts like these where it's stylistic.) I've done the book with them so far but I'm not 100% convinced. Notably my concerns would be, given these are actually distinct characters from the usual letter (as opposed to just a font):

  1. 𝔸 copypastes as 𝔸 not as A
  2. I don't know if screen readers or that kind of technologies can read 𝕊elling as "selling" or if these end up spitting out something like "double-struck s; elling"; or how these things work

Opinions? — Alien  3

If the {{di}} template allowed you to set an alt value, then that would serve for screen readers. --EncycloPetey (talk) 15:16, 24 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Additional comment: The title looks fine in the edit window for me but the "H" at the end of the title on the title page does not display correctly in Mainspace on my computer. --EncycloPetey (talk) 15:18, 24 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Oh well, that settles it. Probably some common fonts don't even have the character, which makes it a no-go. I'll replace them. Thanks for the input anyhow. — Alien  3
