Żółkiewski’s legendary memory was cemented in Polish history with his depictions in painting and literature. Yet, his depiction in a well-known Ottoman book has largely escaped scholarly attention. The text of the Şehname-i Nadiri describes Żółkiewski as a wise and influential nobleman before it narrates his death on the battlefield by both lamenting the demise of a nobleman and celebrating the Ottoman victory. A painting of the Battle of Cecora in the same volume emphasizes his high rank and hints at the aftermath of his death. These textual and visual portrayals in the Şehname-i Nadiri offer an insight into representations of the Other in Ottoman historical narratives.

Producer Özlem Yıldız traces the many lives of the tower through the centuries, from a fire station to an astronomical observatory. By following the recent change in its status and speaking with different stakeholders about the restoration process, we touch on wider debates about politics and cultural heritage in today’s Turkey.

The manuscript features the Turkish anthology of the Ottoman poet Baki (d. 1600) with Safavid miniatures. The connection between the text and the images is one that reflects the well-established tradition of the illustration of nonnarrative books in Safavid Iran. The four themes identified in the miniatures are (a) courtly scenes, (b) entertainment of youths, (c) youth and older man, and (d) a reference to the story of Yusuf and Zuleyha. These themes are associated with the poems they illustrate, and are represented in other works of the period as well, such as the Divan of Hafiz (Topkapı Palace Museum Library, H. 1010) from 1640. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The Art of the Book: Treasures from the Special Collections Research Center, Temple University Libraries, 2024
The exhibition The Art of the Book: Treasures from the Special Collections Research Center, Templ... more The exhibition The Art of the Book: Treasures from the Special Collections Research Center, Temple University Libraries, showcases a variety of artworks housed in the Special Collections Research Center at Temple University's Charles Library. Organized through a curatorial collaboration between graduate students from the Tyler School of Art and Architecture, the exhibition and this catalogue examine how the format of the book has been treated across time and geography. A key question at the heart of this exhibition is, what constitutes a book? The diverse examples featured in this show challenge our preconceived notions and expand our definitions of this type of object. Melding illustration, painting, object-making, calligraphy, and storytelling, the objects featured in The Art of the Book transmit a robust sense of the time and place in which they were created. Many of these books function as repositories of memory that simultaneously reflect the values, history, and available technologies of the particular cultural moment in which they were created. The thematic groupings of these treasures display the variety of ways in which artists from across the globe have dealt with similar subject matter and content.
