Overview

Operation Red Sea (红海行动) is a modern military action film directed by Hong Kong filmmaker Dante Lam (林超贤), released in mainland China on February 16, 2018 (Chinese New Year's Day). Starring Zhang Yi, Hai Qing, Johnny Huang (Huang Jingyu), Du Jiang, and Jiang Luxia, the film is based on the 2015 Yemen evacuation of Chinese citizens.

The film follows an eight-person 'Jiaolong' (Dragon)突击 team of the Chinese Navy as they execute an evacuation mission in an African country. When a coup breaks out, hundreds of Chinese citizens and expatriates are trapped. The Jiaolong突击 team ventures deep into danger, successfully completing the evacuation under extremely harsh conditions. The film grossed 3.65 billion RMB, becoming the champion of the 2018 Spring Festival box office and one of the most successful Chinese military action films ever. It holds a Douban rating of 8.2 out of 10.

Plot

The story centers on a Chinese Navy 'Jiaolong突击 team' evacuation mission. In a fictional African country (the Republic of Ivia), an armed coup traps large numbers of Chinese expatriates and enterprise workers. The Chinese Navy dispatches an eight-person Jiaolong突击 team led by Captain Yang Rui (Zhang Yi) to carry out the mission.

During the operation, the突击 team discovers that Chinese citizens -- journalist Xia Nan (Hai Qing) and her local colleagues -- have been held hostage by rebel forces. To save more compatriots, the Jiaolong team pushes deeper into enemy territory after completing their initial mission, engaging in fierce combat with the rebels.

The film's battle scenes are extraordinarily brutal. The eight-person team suffers continuous casualties during the operation, but each member displays remarkable courage and dedication before falling. Ultimately, in the hostage rescue, the突击 team pays a heavy price, demonstrating the national resolve that 'not a single Chinese citizen shall be left behind.'

Production and Impact

Director Dante Lam, known for his hard-hitting action style, crafted this film as China's answer to Black Hawk Down. The production filmed extensively on location in Morocco and Dubai, achieving a level of realism and震撼力 in battle sequences that ranks among the best in Chinese military cinema.

The film's display of military equipment is meticulous -- from Type 054A frigates to Z-10 attack helicopters, from sniper rifles to anti-tank missiles, the extensive use of real military hardware earned high praise from military enthusiasts.

Jiang Luxia's female soldier Tong Li is one of the standout characters. As the only woman in the Jiaolong突击 team, her courage and resilience in combat are deeply moving, and her 'tough woman' image is a rare female soldier portrayal on the Chinese screen.

Operation Red Sea initially trailed Monster Hunt 2 during the early days of the 2018 Spring Festival period, but through strong word-of-mouth achieved a remarkable reversal, ultimately winning the box office with 3.65 billion RMB. The film was also submitted by China for consideration for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.
